FOURTH GENERATION

47. Benjamin Thomas HARTON (1) was born in 1814 in Alabama. He died in 1898 in Dyersburg, TN. The date of birth was determined by his being of age when his father died before Jan 1838. In the 1850 census he gives his age as 30, and his brother John L was 28. On the other hand if he was 18 he would not have needed a guardian, but was not able to sell property until he was 21. Family info indicates that he died in 1898 at age 84.
There is a probability that Benjamin married more than once. The Mormon files report the birth of James Edward with a mother called Mary Rowell on 21 Nov 1849 in Dyersburg, TN. However the 1850 Census shows the wife was Mary J. who would be the Mary Jane Prewitt. They were still in Madison Co., p 228. with children John M.8, Harriet F. 6, Mary T 4, Macklin L 2. and P. Holliday 26 and Henrietta Maddin 15.
Nancy Kamp has in her possession a letter from Benjamin to his first cousin John James Harton dated May 15, 1869, He lists his children, John W. Harriet F, McKlin L., Mary T, James, Robert, Luanna, Benjamin. "My oldest 2 sons are bricklayers and I am engaged in that business. I got home last nite from Jackson and found your letter. My wife is still living but like myself begining to feel the effects of age. We live under the iron rule of radicals which is fully developed in Tennessee. The unstabled policy of the government mind everything uncertain in the future and I for one have come to the conclusion to only want what I can eat, the wether looks fine at this time wheat crops look fine corn that is up has a fine stalk. As regards your property at Jackson I think the lot is worth at least $1000. Those men writing to you will buy it for as----------they cana if I were you I would sell it is now in come with taxes. I leave on a boat for Memphis in the morning. We have the taxes levied on 4 ounties, Tipton, Lauderdale, Shelby and Dyer Counties to build the Mississippi River.
