(1) was born in 1756 in Warren County, NC.
He died on 24 May 1832 in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN. Mrs. Overcash says
that Howell died in Hamilton County (Chattanooga), TN. It is clear that he deeded
his land to Harbert in Rutherford Co in 1819. I would guess that he went west
perhaps with a son or daughter to TN. Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension
Files, White 1991, Vol II F-M. Harton Howell, Old War IF #20377 on 28 Feb 1824
transferred from NC roll to TN roll. On 16 Mar 1825 he applied for a new certificate
and stated his children had destroyed the original some 16 years earlier when
he lived near Warrenton, NC. The Hamilton County, TNlist of invalid pensioners
showed he received $57.60 per annum and that he had died 24 May 1832. No children
named in the claim.
Howell signed the 1779 petition for division of Bute County after John Riggan,
before John Colclough, Samuel Bell, Danl Pegram, Thos Bell, Wm Riggan, Augustine
Balthrop, James Bell, Jesse Bell, James Myrick, Thos Harton, George Pegram, Edward
Pegram, Gideon Pegram, William Pegram, Francis Riggan. Document preserved in
State Archives, Legislative Papers, Box 21, Folder dated 20 Jan 1779.
Testimonials filed in May-Aug 1801 indicate that Howell was shot through the
leg in 1781, breaking the small bone and dividing the large sinews. He has great
difficulty in walking. Also he has a wife and nine children none of whom are
named. Jacob and William RigganRobert Waller and Auguston Balthrop, George Nicholson
swore that they had known Howell for at least twelve months. Nov 22 1802 Jacob
Mordicai Justice of the peace attested that he was injured in 1781 while serving
in the Revolutionary War and is not on the Pension List of the United States.
Howell signed with a rather crude cross with Howell Hathorn written over it.
Attached to the copied version is a certification by the NC General Assembly
for december 1799 saying that Howell Harten, an invalid, is allowed eight pounds
as a pension for the year 1799. Still in August 1805 he is still applying. Still
in Nov 1808 he is still applying In Abstracts of Rev War Pension Files. on 28
Feb 1824 he was transferred from the NC roll to the Tn roll, on 16 Mar 1825 he
appl for a new cert and stated his children had destroyed the orig cert some
16 years earlier when he lived near Warrenton, NC. The Hamilton Co TN list of
invalid pensioner showed he rec'd $57.60 per annum (later increased to $74) and
that he had d 24 May 1832. In Feb 1997 I examined the pension files in the DC
Archives and found the above to be factual. In addition he served under John
Cokely of NC Militia. A Mrs. William Ticknor of Albany, GA of the Notre Dame
Pecan company inquired into his record in 1922. I would guess that she was a
descendant. Also a Mrs. S L. Jones of 530 Broad St, Albany, GA. Mrs. Ticknore
says he lost a leg at Battle of Guilford Courthouse--I doubt that that is true
since it is not mentioned in the pension application.
In 1774 the Tax List of Warren Co., Capt Colclough's District shows Howell with
one free, Thomas, his father with 512 1/2 acres, and John with 116 1/2,
