1. Thomas HARTON(1)
died in Jan 1795 in Warren County, North Carolina. The earliest record
I have for Thomas Harton in 1749 in ButeCo, NC. in a tax list. He bought 600
acres on W side of Hub Quarters Creek 26 April 1753. In 1749 he was a sworn chain
carrier in the survey of the property of Edward Jones 25 Mar 1749. Jones's property
was on Shocco Creek.
In the NC Census of 1784-1787 Thomas Harton's household had 3 males under 21
and above 60. and 3 white females of all ages, and one black.In the list of taxables
in 1771 Thomas Harton and his son Howell were listed. This was for the North
side of Roanoke and on the South Side as far as the Hiro Road taken by Thomas
Eaton. In 1785 January list of lands processioned in Capt Coleclough's District.
This included "the land of William Shearin present--Jas Paine and Thos
Harton; the land of George Pegram, present Francis Riggan; the land of Gidion
Pegram--present Francis Riggan; the land of John Harton--present Francis Riggan;
the land of Mary Bell--present Francis Riggan; the land of Thos Harton--present
Thos Miller; the land of Thos Miller--present Dan'l Pegram.
Thomas Harton in Feb 1769 was granted license to keep ordinary with Charles Burk
and John Laughter.
DB14 P 287 Describes the division of Thomas Harton (or Harthon)'s land. "
To the orphans of John Harton beginning at fork of the road thence by Black's
road N 16 degrees W 79 poles to a white oak on Howel Harton's line thence along
sd Harton's line E 26 poles to a white oak thence up the sd road to thebeginning.
To Burrell Harton the following land viz Beginning on a pine on Eaton's Road,
thence down the sd road to Wm Colclough's corner thence West to a red and white
oak on Howel Harton's line thence South 30 poles along sd Horton's line to a
white oak thence East to the Begining. To Thomas Harton's orphans the following
lands viz Beginning on a red oak thence by Harton's old line South 28 poles to
a corner on Isaac Acree's line thence by sd Acree's line West 128 poles to a
small white oak, Howel harton's corner thence South 28 poles to a red and white
oak thence East to the beginning, Given under our hands and seals this 18th
day August 1796. John Shearin surveyor, Geo Nicholson, Jas Fram, Isaac Acree
witnesses. Deed registered 23 Aug 1797.
I have speculated that Thomas's father might have been the Thomas Harton of Goochland
Co., VA who was imported by William Sheapard and Richard Baker 2 May 1713. The
land Sheapard and Baker got was in Henrico Co., S. side of the main br aof Chicahominy
Sw. A thomas Harton died in Goochland Co., whose Will was probated in 1751,
included in WB 6, p 140. When I read the will, I found it inconclusive, but it
is a lead to follow.
Mary BELL
(1) (daughter of Thomas BELL and
MARY) was born on 2 Nov 1723 in Surry County, Virginia. She died in Jan 1799
in Warren County, North Carolina. Mary Bell Harton's will was signed 15 Jan
1799 and probated Feb Ct. 1799. She names her son Howell and his son Harbert;
son Burwell (Extr.); son Hardy; children of son John; Dtrs Charity Pegram and
Lucy Price. Witnesses were Geo. Nicholson (Jurat) and Jesse Bell. Warren Co,
NC Will Book 10.
Birth info comes from Charles Parish, VA, indicating that a Mary Bell, daughter
of Thomas and Mary born Nov 2 and baptised Dec 1, 1723--possibly wrong, but time
and place are logical. Thomas HARTON and Mary BELL had the following children:
