This gallant lad, who had enlisted at the age of 18, was killed in action near Bellecourt, France, Sept. 29, 1918, and was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for "extraordinary heroism in action," as well as a French decoration, both of which are now in the possession of his sister. John Stephens Rives was buried in Arlington Cemetery."
