MARTHA T.⁶, REUBEN W., WILLIAM G., ANN HARDAWAY,
AND EDWARD PEGRAM

Issue of Edward Pegram and Dorothy Gilliam:

MARTHA T. PEGRAM⁶, daughter of Edward Pegram and Dorothy Gilliam, was born about 1814, most likely in Sussex County, Virginia. She moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee with her parents in 1829 or 30. She was married to Mumford Wilson, 8 June 1835, in Hardeman County, Tennessee.

"Dr. Mumford Wilson from North Carolina and later Tennessee came to Tippah County, Mississippi in 1839, and practiced in New Albany, settling in Alberson first" (118, p. 147). Alberson was at that time in Tippah County. It appears most likely that this was the Mumford Wilson that married Martha T. Pegram. Dr. Wilson was in Tennessee before going to Tippah County, and Martha was in Hardeman County, Tennessee. Wilson went to Tippah County about the same time that Martha's parents moved there in 1838. Martha was born in 1814, making her 24 years of age at the time. Martha's brother, Reuben, was a doctor, and the few doctors in the area probably were acquainted, and Dr. Wilson may have had an opportunity to meet Martha in this manner. Mumford is not a very common Christian name, and the date and localities are compatible for such a marriage.

DR. REUBEN W. PEGRAM⁶, son of Edward Pegram and Dorothy Gilliam, was born in Virginia in 1818, likely in Sussex County. He moved with his parents to Hardeman County, Tennessee. He married Mary E. Brown 10 September 1847, in Fayette, Tennessee. Census records indicate her birth year at 1831. After her death Reuben married Victoria Beloate, in Hardeman County, Tennessee, in 1860. Dr. Pegram was in Tippah County, Mississippi in 1850, where he was listed as an owner in the county slave schedule, but he was living in Hardeman County, Tennessee in 1860. He practiced medicine in the Saulsbury-Grand Junction area. Old masonic records show that he was a member of Berlin Lodge 170 in Saulsbury. He is mentioned in the minutes of the lodge in each of the years from 1859 through 1865, and may have been a member before and after these dates. It is of interest to the compiler that his great grandfather, Hardeman Carroll Simmons, Hardeman's uncle B.P. Simmons, and Hardeman's two brothers, Dr. Caswell and Newton, were also members of Berlin Lodge 170, during part of the period that Reuben Pegram was a member. Little did they know that the Pegram and Simmons families would later be joined in a number of marriages.

DR. JOHN EPPS PEGRAM⁷, son of Reuben Pegram and Mary E. Brown, was born in Saulsbury, Tennessee, 7 June 1850, and died in Ripley, Mississippi, 4 December 1922 (118). He married Mary Catherine Pankey, 7 December 1869. Mary Catherine was born 18 October 1849, and died 9 March 1907. She is buried at Little Hope Cemetery at Dumas, Mississippi. On 12 September 1907, Dr. Pegram married Mrs. Rosa Lee Nance, in Tippah County, Mississippi. There was no issue from this marriage (19, 121). The compiler remembers Dr. Pegram and his second wife. Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey had nine children: JOSIE ETTA⁸, BAKER MACK, GLENNIE DORA, THOMAS EDWARD, ROGER WHITFIELD, EARL, MARY CATHERINE, ROBERT HUGH and ROY EPPS.

JOSIE ETTA PEGRAM⁸, daughter of Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey, was born 1 August 1870. She married Thomas Jefferson Clark, and they lived in Wylie, Oklahoma. No record of issue available.

BAKER MACK PEGRAM⁸, son of Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey, was born in Benton County, Mississippi, 21 February 1872, and died 26 January 1956, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was buried in Memphis Memorial Park. Baker Mack married Ellen Crowder, 17 October 1897. She was born 5 February 1880 at Falkner, Mississippi and died in Memphis 10 October 1952. Baker Mack was a railroad locomotive engineer and lived at Jackson, Tennessee, before going to Memphis in 1947. When I was a young boy I remember either him or his brother, Roger, running through Ripley, Mississippi on what was then the Gulf Mobile and Northern Railroad. One day he let me climb up into the cab with him while the engine was sitting at the railroad depot, a huffing and a puffing. This was an event of the year for me, and something that I could boast to my playmates about. Baker was with the railroad forty two years before retirement. He was an ardent fox hunter, and widely known among that fraternity. Baker and Ellen had eight children: LILLIE MAE⁹, KATE CORNELIA, MOLLIE LEE, RICHARD EPPS, HELEN BEATRICE, MARY ELLEN, EUGENIA BAKER and WILLIAM MOORE.

LILLIE MAE PEGRAM⁹, was born 10 October 1898. She married John Humphreys, 11 November 1924, and they lived at Huntington, Tennessee. They had a child, PEGGY B01310, born 18 September 1932.

KATE CORNELIA PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Baker Mack Pegram and Ellen Crowder, was born 7 October 1900. She married Mundo Flores in September 1936, and they lived in San Antonio, Texas.

MOLLIE LEE PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Baker Mack Pegram and Ellen Crowder was born 12 May 1903. She married T. Gordon Tinkle on 28 April 1921. They were in the antique business in Memphis. They had a son THOMB GORDON'°, born 10 April 1922, and a daughter, ELLEN DOROTHY, born 20 August 1924.

RICHARD EPPS PEGRAM⁹, son of Baker Mack Pegram and Ellen Crowder, was born 10 September 1905. He married Beulah Kay, 14 January 1926. They lived in Jackson, Tennessee and had a son, RICHARD EPPS. JR.¹⁰, born 21 October 1927.

HELEN BEATRICE PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Baker Mack Pegram and Ellen Crowder was born 28 November 1907. She was married to Franklin Munroe Wallace, 22 January 1927. They lived in Reagan, Tennessee, and had five children:

EUGENIA BAKER PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Baker Mack Pegram and Ellen Crowder was born 31 January 1913. She married William Edwin Johnson, 22 October 1934, and they lived in Memphis.

WILLIAM MOORE PEGRAM⁹, son of Baker Mack Pegram and Ellen Crowder was born 20 December 1915. He married Johnne Latane Lowrey, 10 August 1936, and lived in Jackson, Tennessee (121, 122).

GLENNIE DORA PEGRAM⁸, daughter of Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey was born 4 February 1874 in Benton County, Mississippi, in the Canaan Community, and died 1 April 1962 (118). She married James Marshall McMillin at Blue Mountain, Mississippi, 20 December 1893 (118). Mr. McMillin was born at Tiplersville, Mississippi, 8 April 1872, and died 12 December 1943, and is buried at Tiplersville. There were eight children, all born at Falkner, Mississippi. They were JOSEPH EPPS⁹, ELLIS MARSHALL, WILLIAM EARL, ERNEST WRIGHT, CLARENCE EDWARD, JAMES EVERETT, KITTIE LEE and THURSTON ERICK. (118).

JOSEPH EPPS McMILLIN⁹, son of Glennie Dora Pegram and James M. McMillin, was born 19 October 1894. He married Ethel Elliott, 26 September 1920. They had a child JOSEPHINE'°, born in 1933.

ELLIS MARSHALL McMILLIN⁹, son of Glennie Dora Pegram and James McMillin, was born 31 December 1896. He married Mamie Lenora Keith, 23 September 1917, and they resided in Tiplersville. They had six children (118):

FRANKIE MADELINE McMILLIN¹⁰, daughter of Ellis M. McMillin and Mamie Keith, was born 8 December 1918. She married Roy Jackson, 24 December 1935, and they lived in Falkner. They had three children: ANNA LOYCE¹¹, born 27 April 1940: RAYMOND MACK, born 26 November 1943 and DORA JANE, born 30 September 1952.

JAMES MARSHALL McMILLIN¹⁰, son of Ellis Marshall McMillin and Mamie Keith, was born 29 August 1920. He married Charlotte Milling, and they lived in Memphis. They had four children: BETTY JEAN¹¹, born 10 April 1941; SARAH JO, born 29 July 1943; JOHN MARSHALL, born 18 February 1947; and CHARLOTTE ANN, born 24 June 1958. She married William John Yablouski in March 1984, and they had a son, JONATHAN MICHAEL", born 6 November 1984.

ROBERT EPPS McMILLIN¹⁰, son of Ellis Marshall McMillin and Mamie Keith, was born 24 December 1922, and lived in Tiplersville; Mississippi.

EDITH GLENDORA McMILLIN¹⁰, daughter of Ellis Marshall McMillin and Mamie Keith, was born 7 June 1924. She married Roy LaBarreare, 18 January 1946. They lived at Falkner. They had: THOMAS WAYNE¹¹, born 19 August 1950; and VICKIE ANN, born 12 April 1953.

JOE ETHEL McMILLIN¹⁰, daughter of Ellis Marshall McMillin and Mamie Keith, was born 18 February 1931. She married Newton Gresham of Blue Mountain, Mississippi, 15 April 1951. They had a daughter SHIRLEY JEAN¹¹, born 21 October 1953, and died at birth. There may be subsequent issue.

BOBBIE JEAN McMILLIN¹¹, daughter of Ellis Marshall McMillin and Mamie Keith, was born 14 December 1933. She married Hugh Butler, 13 June 1951, and they lived at Falkner.

WILLIAM EARL McMILLIN⁹, son of James Marshall McMillin and Glennie Dora Pegram, was born 22 August 1899 (118). He married Brownie Irvin, 3 January 1925, and they lived in Tiplersville. They had a son EDWARD EARL¹⁰, born in 1926.

ERNEST WRIGHT McMILLIN⁹, son of James Marshall McMillin and Glennie Dora Pegram, was born 2 March 1902 and died 7 February 1978 (118). He married Lillie E. Dawkins, 9 March 1929. They lived in Falkner and had issue: ERNEST WRIGHT¹⁰, JAMES WALTER, MARGARET and EDDIE RICE.

CLARENCE EDWARD McMILLIN⁹, son of James Marshall McMillin and Glennie Dora Pegram, was born 9 February 1905 and died 12 March 1979. He married Vera Maye

McGee, 1 August 1931. They lived at Jackson, Mississippi. They had CLARENCE DEAN¹⁰, and HARRY CLAU DE.

JAMES EVERETT McMILLIN⁹, son of James Marshall McMillin and Glennie Dora Pegram, was born I0 May 1907. He married Josie Pauline Childers, 26 November 1930. They lived at Ripley, Mississippi, and had issue: CATHLEEN¹⁰, JOE, EVERETT and DANNIE.

THURSTON ERICK McMILLIN9, son of James Marshall McMillin and Glennie Dora Pegram, was born 28 November 1909. He lived at Tiplersville, Mississippi and never married.

KITTIE LEE McMILLIN⁹, daughter of James Marshall McMillin and Glennie Dora Pegrarn, was born 19 March 1912. She married Laurence Alvis Shappley, 12 November 1932. They lived in Bolivar, Tennessee, and had issue LEE ALVIS¹⁰ and NANCY GLENN (118).

THOMAS EDWARD PEGRAM⁸,son of Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey, was born 18 November 1876 in Tippah County, Mississippi and died there, 25 July 1957. He graduated from the Millsaps School of Law in Jackson, Mississippi in 1905. He practiced law in Ripley, Mississippi from 1905 to 1922. He was Circuit Judge, Third Judicial District from 1922 to 1935. He was President of the Bank of Ripley from 1920 to 1931. He was Assistant Director of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, Washington, D.C., 19351937, and Secretary of the General Household Utilities Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1937-39. He returned to the practice of law in Ripley in 1937 and continued until his death. Thomas Edward was Grand Master of Masons, State of Mississippi, 1928. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

Thomas married Hattie Garmillia Bennett in 1906, and they had one son, THOMAS EDWARD, JR.⁹.

THOMAS EDWARD PEGRAM, JR.⁹, son of Thomas Edward Pegram and Garmiilia Bennett, was born in Ripley, Mississippi, 17 November 1911. Thomas, Jr., or Torn, was an attorney. He obtained LL.B. and Juris Doctor degrees from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1939. He was admitted to the District of Columbia and the Mississippi State Bars
in 1939. He was Secretary to U.S. Senator Hubert D. Stephens, 1930-35, and from 1935 to 1941 he was Field Representative of the Rural Electrification Administration. He was Probation Officer, United States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi from 1941 to 1963, since which time he was in the general practice of law in Ripley, Mississippi, until his death on 29 November 1984. Ile was formerly attorney for the Bank of Falkner, a member of the Mississippi State Bar Association and American Bar Association. Like his father he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Thomas Jr. married Georgia Meriwether of Memphis, 28 May 1934, and they had five children: THOMAS EDWARD III¹⁰ CHARLES MERIWETH ER, GEORGE LESLIE, LEE ALLEN and PATRICIA KAY.

THOMAS EDWARD PEGRAM III¹⁰, son of Thomas Edward Pegram Jr. and Georgia Meriwether, was born in Memphis, Tennessee, 27 April 1935. He received a B.A. degree from the University of Mississippi, and graduated from the Jackson College of Law in 1960. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He was with the Civil Defense Department at Jackson, and for a time with the First Baptist Hospital. He was appointed Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in

1970, and was stationed in Memphis, Tennessee. He married Mary Ann Longo of Houston, Mississippi.

CHARLES MERIWETHER PEGRAM¹⁰, son of Thomas E. Pegram Jr. and Georgia Meriwether, was born in Washington, D.C., 7 October 1938. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1961. He is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He is a former Vice-President of Union Planters Bank in Memphis. He was with the Memphis City Government in 1978-80. He is now, 1981, Director of the Cook Convention Center in Memphis. He married Sylvia Steinreide, 10 February 1962. They had three Children: CHARLES MERIWETHER JR.", born 16 December 1962; DEBORAH, born 14 October 1966 and DIANE, born 12 January 1968.

GEORGE LESLIE PEGRAM10, son of Thomas Edward Pegram Jr. and Georgia Meriwether, was born in Ripley, Mississippi, 4 October 1946. He graduated with B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Mississippi, 1968. George is engaged in real estate management and development, and is General Manager of the W.T. Cash Company in Tallahassee, Florida. Like the other members of his family, he is a Pi Kappa Alpha.

George married Magalyn Gregg in 1964, and there were two children: GEORGANNA¹¹, born October 1964, and LEE MERIWETHER, born December 1968. This marriage ended in divorce in 1970, and George married Bebe Windham. One son was born to this marriage GEORGE L. JR.¹¹, 10 June 1971.

LEE ALLEN PEGRAM¹⁰, son of Thomas Edward Pegram Jr. and Georgia Meriwether, was born in Ripley, 15 October 1950. Lee Allen attended the University of Mississippi. He was formerly with Southern Air Lines in Memphis, and later Sales Manager of automobile firms in Memphis, Paducah, Kentucky and Boca Raton, Florida. He is presently, 1981, engaged in Insurance sales.

Lee Allen married Carole Estes of Ripley in 1970. Carole is the daughter of Thelma Simmons and Robert Estes. Thelma is the daughter of the late Bryan E. Simmons and Falba Moss. This is one of a number of marriages involving the Pegram and Simmons families, during this century. Lee Allen and Carole had three children: VIRGINIA CRYSTAL¹¹, born 11 August 1971; LEE ALLEN JR., born 20 February 1976 and ERIC M., born 19 January 1978 and died 19 January 1982.

PATRICIA KAY PEGRAM¹⁰, daughter of Thomas Edward Pegram Jr. and Georgia Meriwether, was born at Ripley, Mississippi, 25 December 1954. Patricia attended Northeast Mississippi Junior College at Booneville. She married Doyle Caviness of Ripley, and they had two children: LESLIE CORRINNE¹¹, 11 August 1974 and THOMAS BRYAN, 16 November 1975. Patricia and Doyle were divorced. She is employed by the Mississippi State Department of Public Welfare in Ripley, 1981.

ROGER WHITFIELD PEGRAM⁸, son of Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey, was born in Benton County, Mississippi 7 June 1880. He married Martha Frances Jenkins of Middleton, Tennessee, 4 March 1906. Martha was the daughter of James Edward Jenkins and Martha Frances Lambert of Middleton. Roger, like several of his brothers, was with the railroad. He lived in New Albany, Mississippi, where his children were born, and in Jackson, Tennessee. Roger and Martha had seven children:

JAMES ROGER PEGRAM⁹, son of Roger Whitfield Pegram and Martha Jenkins, was born 30 June 1907. He married, first Mary Sauceman, and second Maria Hobbs. They had ROGER MILLER¹⁰, born 13 May 1929, and lived in New York City.

VIRGINIA FRANCES PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Roger Whitfield Pegram and Martha Frances Jenkins, was born 1 October 1909. She married W.G. McCoy, 21 November 1942. They lived in Jackson, Tennessee.

ROBERT HUGH PEGRAM⁹, son of Roger Whitfield Pegram and Martha Frances Jenkins, was born 31 July 1911. He married Mary Eveline Rainey, who was born 21 September 1916, on 27 November 1938. They lived in Jackson, Tennessee, and had MARY ANGELYN¹⁰, born 20 June 1947 and HUGH RAINEY, born 22 July 1950.

SARAH OLINA PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Roger Whitfield Pegram and Martha F. Jenkins, was born 25 April 1920. She married Martin Dial Marshall, and they lived in Jackson, Tennessee. They had FRANCES DIALLINA10, born 28 June 1945.

MARTHA NELL PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Roger Whitfield Pegram and Martha F. Jenkins, was born 25 October 1921, and died 26 November 1921.

REBECCA JANE PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Roger Whitfield Pegram and Martha F. Jenkins, was born 2 August 1924. She married Eddie Braig, and they lived at Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.

EARL PEGRAM8, son of Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey, was born 25 January 1883. He first married Velma Floyd, and then Myra Baldridge, on 7 July 1928. They lived at Jackson, Tennessee and had four children:

EARL FLOYD PEGRAM⁹, was born in 1909. He married Bessie of Kansas, and they lived in Arlington, Virginia, and had issue: BETTY LOUISE¹⁰, EARL, PEGGY and BUDDY.

THOMAS MACK PEGRAM⁹, son of Earl Pegram and Velma Floyd, was born 1 August 1911. He married Mabel Leona Williams, 26 May 1936. They lived in Jackson, Tennessee, and had JOHN THOMAS10, born 1 August 1944 and HUGH WILSON, born 30 November 1951.

MILDRED LOUISE PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Earl Pegram and Velma Floyd, was born about 1921. She married Robert Wilson, who was killed in World War II. Mildred later married Ralph Morrow, and they had JERRY¹⁰, born 28 November 1946. They lived in Los Angeles, California.

MARY CATHERINE PEGRAM⁸, daughter of Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey, was born 7 July 1885. She died unmarried, 7 April 1907.

DR. ROBERT HUGH PEGRAM⁸, son of Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey, was born at Falkner, Mississippi, 21 March 1888. Dr. Pegram was a physician, an ear, eye, nose and throat specialist, and practiced in Tupelo, Mississippi. He was widely known in the North Mississippi area, drawing patients from considerable distances. He married Pearl West, who was the mother of four of his five children. She died in 1927, and he later married Delta Dillard, who bore him a daughter. Dr. Pegram's children were as follows:

ROBERT HUGH PEGRAM JR., M.D.⁹ was born 21 March 1912. He married Mary Florence Hall, who was the daughter of Finley Kinkaid Hall and Jane Elliott. They lived in Tupelo, where Dr. Pegram practiced medicine. They had issue: MARY HALL¹⁰, born 18 March 1941; JUDITH ANN, born 15 July 1946 and ROBERTA JANE, born 12 December 1948.

DOROTHY ELEANOR PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Dr. Robert Hugh Pegram8 and Pearl West, was born 13 October 1913. She married Woodrow Wilson, 1 January 1946, and they lived at Pensacola, Florida. They had ROBERT WOODROW10, born 18 February 1950.

JEANNETTE PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Dr. Robert Pegram and Pearl West, was born 23 January 1916. She married Jarrett Crewdson Renshaw, 3 June 1938. They lived in Memphis and had issue: DOROTHY CECILE¹⁰, born 22 May 1944, and ROBERT JARRETT, born 1 December 1952.

MAX WEST PEGRAM, M.D.⁹, son of Dr. Robert Pegram and Pearl West, was born 5 August 1920. He married Helen , who was born in Utah, at Tupelo in 1946.

They lived in San Marino, California, and had issue: CANDACE LYNN¹⁰, born 6 November 1947; CASSANDRA, born 7 January 1949 and ROBERT MAX, born 2 April 1954.

JO ANN PEGRAM⁹, daughter of Dr. Robert Hugh Pegram and Delta Dillard, was born January 1930. She married Robert E. Scribner, and they lived in Tupelo. They had ROBERT¹⁰, born 13 September 1954, (121).

ROY EPPS PEGRAM⁸, son of Dr. John Epps Pegram and Catherine Pankey, was born at Falkner, Mississippi, 2 April 1890. Roy was a railroad man, like several of his brothers. He was formerly a conductor on the M. and N. Railroad, and was freight conductor on the Santa Fe Railroad. He was in California for twenty two years, and lived at Maywood, near Los Angeles. He was married to Esther Taylor. Roy was killed in a Railroad Accident, 24 December 1936. He had a son and daughter, and perhaps other children.

After the death of his first wife, Mary E. Brown, Dr. Reuben Pegram° married Victoria Beloate in 1860, in Hardeman County, Tennessee. They had issue four children as follows:

EDWARD TODD PEGRAM⁷, son of Dr. Reuben Pegram and his second wife, Victoria Beloate, was born 24 March 1873, and died 7 April 1961, in Ripley, Mississippi. He is buried at Hopewell Cemetery beside his wife, who was Haine Adell Maddox. She was born 1 August 1875 and died 22 December 1961. Todd, as he was known, was a farmer in Tippah County, in the Falkner area. He later moved to the Hamilton Community of Benton County. Todd and Haine Adell, known as Ada, had seven children, as follows:

HOBART REUBEN⁸, born 18 August 1897 and died 4 June 1981. He married Annie Caviness, 23 October 1921, and had a daughter, MAXINE⁹, who lived in Memphis, Tennessee.

ELLA JOSEPHINE PEGRAM⁸, daughter of Edward Todd Pegram and Haine Adell Maddox, was born 22 February 1900. She first married Maynard Bynum, 1 June 1922, and later married a Mr. Hudspeth. Ella now, 1983, lives in Bolivar, Tennessee. There was issue one child: DOROTHY BYNUM⁹, who married Carlo Sellari, 1 January 1942. There were three children: TERRY¹⁰ and JERRY, twins born 20 November 1942; one daughter ANITA CARLOTTA, born 10 March 1949. They reside in Norcross, Georgia.

FLORENCE VICTORIA PEGRAM⁸, daughter of Todd Pegram and Haine Adell Maddox, was born 6 August 1902. She married Lawrence Bogard, 30 December 1922. They had issue:

ROGER LEE PEGRAM⁸, son of Todd Pegram and Haine Adell Maddox, was born 20 May 1908. He is a veteran of World War II, and was in the Normandy Beach Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He is not married, and lives at Mountain View, Tennessee Veterans Home.

ROBERT WINCHESTER PEGRAM⁸, son of Todd Pegram and Haine Adell Maddox, was born 15 May 1910. He married Hortense Courson, 22 June 1934. They had issue:

REUBEN YOUNG PEGRAM⁷, son of Dr. Reuben Pegram and Victoria Beloate, was born 16 December 1876, in Grand Junction, Tennessee. He married Ella Josephine Childers, born in 1880. She died in 1967 in Memphis, Tennessee.

FLETCHER PEGRAM⁷, son of Dr. Reuben Pegram and Victoria Beloate, was probably born in Grand Junction, Tennessee. He lived in Tippah County, Mississippi.

KATE PEGRAM⁷, daughter of Dr. Reuben Pegram and Victoria Beloate, lived in Tippah County. Issue not known.

MAJOR WILLIAM G. PEGRAM⁶ was the son of Edward Pegram⁵ and Dorothy Gilliam. According to census data he was born in Virginia, probably Sussex County, in either 1822 or 23. He was only a small boy when his parents left Virginia, and settled in Hardeman County, Tennessee. He was there until 1838, when his parents moved to the Falkner area of Tippah County, Mississippi. He would have been about sixteen years of age at the time. He married Elexina R. Royster about 1851. She was the daughter of Richard C. Royster of Tippah County.

On 16 February 1852 Elexina's father made a deed to her, as party of the second part, and to Richard C. Royster as party of the third part, wherein he gave, for natural love and affection, four negro slaves. The slaves were conveyed in trust to Richard C. Royster Jr. for the sole use and benefit of Elexina R. Pegram, his daughter. They and their increase were to pass to her children. If there were no children the property would return to her father, if living, otherwise to his children.

Major Pegram was shown as having six slaves in the 1850 slave census of Tippah County. The agriculture schedule showed him with 535 acres of land. In the 1860 census he was shown with real estate valued at $3500 and personal property worth $10,000.

William G. Pegram was in the Confederate Army, Confederate State of Mississippi, Tippah County.

We hereby certify that the Volunteer Company called the "Tippah Rangers" met at their parade ground (to wit) at James Childer's, in said County, on 25th. day of February, 1862, and organized by the election of John Y. Murry, Capt., W.G. Pegram, 1st. Lieut, John D. Morrow and George Wright, 2nd. Lieuts. Said Company numbers 70 men whose names are as follows . . ." Signed W.A. Brinkman.

This company became Company A of the 34th. Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. First Lieutenant Pegram succeeded Capt. Murry of Company A, when the latter was appointed Assistant Surgeon. Pegram was subsequently promoted to Major. He held this rank when he was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga on 19 September 1863, and was sent to interior hospital. Major Pegram remained in the Confederate Army until 16 March 1864 (123). He had to cease active duty because of trouble from his wounds. He was always known as Major Bill.

Elexina, William's wife, must have died young, since he married Theodocia Clay Hines, daughter of Hiram Hines and Serena Sherrard, of the Hopewell Community in Tippah County, now Benton County, Mississippi, 4 March 1861. No record has been found of any issue of Major Pegram and Elexina Royster. There were two children of William and Theodocia:

WILLIE A. PEGRAM⁷, a female, and first child of William G. Pegram and Theodocia Hines, was born in 1862, and died in 1871. She was buried in the Hines Family Cemetery at Hopewell. Her grave bears a marker.

SUE AYDOLETTE PEGRAM⁷, known as "Sue Ida", or most commonly as Ida, was born in 1865. She married James T. Proctor, 10 November 1887. After the death of Major Bill, Theodocia, Ida and her husband, Mr. Proctor, moved to Farmville, Texas, just north of Dallas, where Frank Hines, Theodocia's brother lived. They traveled by train in the winter of 1893. They initially leased property from Frank Hines, but in 1896 they settled on a farm at Nevada, near Farmville, in Collins County, Texas.

Sue Ida and Mr. Proctor had three children: ALICE⁸, born in 1888 and died in 1905; MABEL, born in 1890, married C.F. Jones of Nevada. In 1977 she was living in Dallas and was 87 years of age. WILLIE P. PROCTOR, the third child, was born in 1893. He married Mattie Jones, and lived in Dallas, Texas, (124).

Major Bill Pegram is buried at the Hines Family Cemetery at Hopewell. His gravestone gives no dates, only the following: "Major William Pegram 34th. Mississippi Infantry C.S.A." Theodocia, his wife, died 4 March 1909 near Copeville, Texas and is buried in Thompson Cemetery near there. Sue Ida died in 1948, and is also buried in Thompson Cemetery near her mother. Jim Proctor died at the age of 93 (124).

Major Pegram was active in military and political affairs of the area. He was a lawyer and a member of the Mississippi Senate, from Tippah County during 1870-72 (153). After his release from the Confederate Army, he spent the remainder of his life practicing law and farming. According to information that has been handed down through the family, Major Bill was a swashbuckling individual, both in military and civilian life. He was engaged in a number of activities in his life, and apparently did justice to them all.

ANN HARDAWAY PEGRAM⁶, daughter of Edward Pegram and Dorothy Gilliam, was born in 1825, in Virginia, likely Sussex County. Her parents left Virginia soon after her birth. She had a brother born in Alabama in 1829, and her parents were in Hardeman County, Tennessee in 1830, and in Tippah County, Mississippi in 1838 or 39. Ann married Lemuel L. Gibson, who was born 29 September 1818 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Mr. Gibson was the son of Moses Gibson, born 9 February 1783 and Elizabeth Paisley, born 25 June 1785, both of Guilford County, North Carolina. Moses Gibson was the son of the emigrant, Andrew Gibson and wife Jane Freeland.

The 1850 census of Tippah County shows Lemuel L. Gibson 32, farmer, born North Carolina, Ann H. Gibson 25, born Virginia ALBERT W. GIBSON⁷, 2, born in Mississippi and WHITFIELD (W.G.) GIBSON, 4 months, born in Mississippi. They had an additional child VIRGINIA, born in 1852. The 1860 census of Tippah County shows Ann H. Gibson6 and her three children, Albert, W.G., and Virginia living with Ann's father Edward Pegram in Tippah County. Ann's husband, Lemuel Gibson, may have died after the 1850 census.

VIRGINIA GIBSON⁷, Ann's youngest child, married Frank Hines, son of Hiram Hines and Serena Sherrard of Hopewell, now in Benton County. Frank as previously noted was the brother of Theodocia Hines, the wife of Major Bill Pegram6, Virginia's uncle. He was also the brother of Louisa Caroline Hines, wife of Hardeman C. Simmons, and great grandmother of the compiler. Virginia's husband Frank Hines was born 27 March 1850 in Tippah County, and Virginia was born in 1852. They were married 9 February 1871.

According to Craig (124), Benjamin Franklin Hines pursued an ambitious and promising course of self advancement in his early manhood. After marrying Virginia Gibson they moved to Freestone County, Texas. This was about the time that his sister Clarissa Hines, wife of Dr. Henry Hiram Blanchard moved there in 1877. In the early 1880s, Frank in an attempt to advance his grocery business moved to Farmville, Texas, where he eventually owned appreciable property. In the year

1889 he began investing in rental property in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, and on the Ft. Worth Road. His wife Virginia died in 1890, when Frank was only forty. It was said that after her death he seemed to lose interest, became somewhat of an eccentric, and lived off of his investments. Apparently because of negligent management he lost much of his property through default. He died in Dallas 5 February 1909, and was buried in Oak Cliff Cemetery in Dallas, beside his beloved "Jenny" (Craig 124).

Virginia and Frank had five children: CHARLES W.⁸, born in 1872, and killed by a falling log in 1876; EFFIE E., born in 1874. She married John Maclin, a childhood friend in Tennessee, and returned there with her husband. They are buried at Grand Junction, Tennessee. FRANK LEON was born in 1877 and died in 1938. He never married, and is buried in the Farmville, Texas Cemetery. EVA G. "PET" was born in September 1881 and died in 1950. She married G.W . Howell of Farmville on 12 October 1913. There was no issue. Pet's second marriage was to a Mr. Barron of Alabama about 1940. She died in Alabama. OTHO SHELTON⁸ was the last child of Virginia and Frank. He was born in April 1886 and died in October 1929. Otho married Lucille Allen in 1915. There was no issue. He died in McKinney, Texas.

The marriage of Virginia Gibson to Frank Hines constituted the ninth known marriage between the Pegram, the Hines and the Simmons families, none being blood related.

EDWARD PEGRAM⁶, youngest child of Edward Pegram and Dorothy Gilliam, was born in Alabama in 1829, according to census records. There is no apparent record of his father having lived in Alabama. He was in Virginia in 1825 and in Tennessee in 1830. As previously noted he may have sojourned in Alabama on his way to Tennessee. Edward⁶ never married, and died in Tippah County, Mississippi.
