26 MARY5, THOMAS, SUSAN AND NANCY
PEGRAM MARY PEGRAM5, daughter of Daniel Pegram and Nancy Hardaway, was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, 27 February 1789 (6, 19, 72). She died 20 August 1843, in North Carolina. Mary married Lemuel Moorman, whether in Bedford County, Virginia or North Carolina is uncertain. They lived in Shelby, North Carolina and had a number of children: NANCY H.C.6 first married Able Hoyle, and they had issue a son, LEMUEL7. Nancy's second marriage was to Edward Lewis Jr. There were other children than Lemuel Hoyle, perhaps by both husbands, but no names are known. The second child of Mary's, DANIEL B.P.6 married Jane S. Kerr, 27 January 1841. CORNELIA, the third child, married Andrew Rosmond, 26 October 1841, and they had issue ROBERT7. THOMAS PEGRAM5, son of Daniel Pegram and Nancy Hardaway, was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, 20 April 1791 (6, 19, 72). Thomas married Narcissa Hopkins, likely in Bedford County, Virginia. Thomas and his older brother Edward remained in Virginia when their parents moved to North Carolina. Thomas died in Bedford County in August 1818. His will is recorded in book 5, page 46, Bedford County, Virginia. Gardiner (19) cites from "Pioneer Families of Missouri-Montgomery County" . . . "Pegram-The parents of Daniel Pegram were Scotch. Daniel was born near Petersburg, Virginia, but settled in Bedford County, Virginia, where he raised ten children, four sons and six daughters, each of whom (sons) was more than six feet in height." (Daniel moved to North Carolina about 1813, before all of his children were grown, S. W. S.) Thomas, a son of Daniel4 married the daughter of a Mrs. Clark, who had a brother, Chester Clark, that drew $100,000 in a lottery. The statement that Daniel Pegram was Scotch was not substantiated. The Pegrams were from England, and could have been of Scotch descent. Thomas Pegram5 died at the age of twenty seven years, but he and Narcissa Hopkins had three sons: JAMES LAWRENCE PEGRAM6 was born in Bedford County, Virginia in 1813. He married Julia Kyle Otey. His marriage bond was dated 19 January 1836. James moved to St. Charles County, Missouri, and later to Montgomery County. They had eight children of record: WILLIAM DANIEL7, ELLA, LAURA, PRUDENCE, EDWIN AUGUSTUS, LESTER, EUGENE and MARGARET. WILLIAM DANIEL PEGRAM6, son of Thomas Pegram and Narcissa Hopkins, was born in Bedford County. He is said to have died at age 19 (19, 41). However, in the "General Index to Decedents, Trusts or Wards" of Bedford County, there is an entry of Edward T.W., William and James L. in the year 1839. This may have been made by their guardian, William Leftwich Jr., concerning an account of Thomas' estate (125). William would have been at least 21 years of age, if living. It may have been required that he be listed even though deceased. At any rate William must have died at a relatively young age, as there appears to be no record of him in later years. EDWARD THOMAS W. PEGRAM6, son of Thomas Pegram and Narcissa Hopkins, was born in Bedford County, 29 March 1818, the year that his father died. Edward T. W. died 30 November 1876, presumably in Montgomery County, Missouri, where he lived. Edward Thomas was listed in the "General Index to Decedents, Trusts or Wards" of Bedford County in 1839. 161 Thomas, Edward T.W.'s father, was said to have died in August 1818, and Edward was born 29 March 1818 (41). If these dates are correct Edward would have been four to five months of age at his father's death, but he was not mentioned in his father's will. Thomas' other two sons were named, but all three sons were included in the estate settlement (125). Edward Thomas married Mildred Crane of Montgomery County, Missouri, 11 November 1846, and they had issue:
SUSAN PEGRAM5, daughter of Daniel Pegram and Nancy Hardaway, was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, 26 August 1793, and died 14 October 1891, at South Point, Gaston County, North Carolina. She married Edward T. Brandon, 12 January 1832, who died in 1871. Susan was said to be a very small person. She lived to be ninety eight years of age. She had no children. She is buried in Bethel Church Cemetery, near Clover, South Carolina. NANCY PEGRAM5, daughter of Daniel Pegram and Nancy Hardaway, was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, 31 January 1796. She married William Mason of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, about 1820. Nancy died 20 September 1873. There were two known children: GEORGE WASHINGTON6, who married Nancy Hannah Stowe; and SUSAN VIRGINIA, who married Robert C. Partlow. There are descendants in the Gaffney, South Carolina area. 162 |
