Major James Douglas Walkup was promoted to a Colonel while serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The home of Samuel Douglas and Elizabeth Walkup was located on Walkup Road (formerly Pines Road) and was called "Terrette". They owned this property at the time the railroad came through the town in about 1861.
The Houston family genealogy says: "Settled on a farm in Tennessee, and soon after went into the mercantile business. His wife is said to be an active, industrious woman, much respected and beloved by her friends. He joined the Methodist Church (having no Presbyterian Church near him), and acts as a class-leader."

She was born 4 Feb 1847 and died 31 Jan 1931. Soldier File#441.708 (1888/1890). Wilbur F. Browder was the son of David Browder. Wilbur was born on the 12th of December, 1848, soon after the relocation of his father David to Clarksville, Tennessee. Wilbur F. Browder was chiefly reared in Montgomery, Alabama, a residence of his father's family after their removal from Clarksville, Tennessee. When Wilbur was sixteen years old, he entered the Randolph Macon College of Virginia, where he pursued his studies for one year, at which time he became a student in the University of Virginia, graduated from that institution in 1868. He then entered the law department of the University of Lexington, Kentucky, graduating therefrom in 1869; was admitted to practice in November, 1869, and at once established an office in Russellville, Kentucky. Wilbur enjoyed an extensive reputation as an able lawyer. He was a pleasant speaker, and in his practice demonstrated the fact that personal abuse and tonguy sarcasm are not elements of success in law practice. He occupied several positions of trust, in all of which he justified the confidence reposed in him. Wilbur, during the existence of the Logan County National Bank, was for several year, its president. He also held a director position with the same bank. In 1874, he was appointed to the office of register in bankruptcy, which he filled until the office was vacated by the repeal of the bankrupt law in 1878. Wilbur was Master in Chancery of the Logan Circuit Court, and was chairman of the executive Democratic committee of Logan County and senatorial district. He was married in 1871 to Bettie Wills, daughter of John W. and Eliza (Bibb) Wills.
