Descendants of George Pegram
Fifth Generation
(Continued)

178. Winfield Scott (William Scott , Sarah Pegram , Daniel , George ) was born on 13 Jun 1786 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. He died on 29 May 1866 in West Point, Orange Co., New York.

Winfield Scott (1786-1866) was an American soldier, native of Petersburg VA, studied at William and Mary College and read law in an office at home. He entered the army prior to War of 1812 when he took part in the skirmishes of Chippewa and Lundy's Lane and rose rapidly to the rank of brigadier. At the close of that war he was given a gold medal by Congress and was brevetted major-general. President Jackson stationed him at Charleston during the nullification troubles. He had general management of the Black Hawk War. He superintended the removal of the Cherokees from Georgia to Indian Territory. During the Mexican War he led the force that landed at Vera Cruz. He won engagements that resulted in the capture of the City of Mexico in 1852 he was a Whig candidate but was overwhelmingly defeated by Pierce. At the outbreak of the Civil War Lincoln chose him as commander but after the battle at Bull Run Lincoln considered him unable to cope with the situation (he would have been 74) and he retired. His pompous military way gained him the nickname in the ranks as " Old Fuss and Feat hers". He died at West Point.

Although many Scott families have a tradition that they are related to Winfield Scott, to date we only know of direct descendants through his daughter, Cornelia Scott who married Henry Lee Scott. We would love to hear from any descendants of Henry Lee Scott and Cornelia Scott.

We are also very interested in seeing any documentation on his purported marriage to Lucy Baker of New Orleans.

Winfield married (1) Lucy Baker about 1812 in New Orleans, Jefferson, Louisianna. Lucy was born about 1795 in New Orleans, Jefferson, Louisianna.

They had the following children:

733 M i Winfield "Winnie" Scott was born on 4 Nov 1813 in Kentucky.
734 M ii John Baker Scott was born on 2 Feb 1816 in Laurel Branch Plantation, Dinwiddie Co., Virginia.

Winfield married 1 (2) Maria Dehart Mayo daughter of John Mayo and Abigail DeHart on 11 Mar 1817 in Richmond, Henrico Co., Virginia. Maria was born about 1789 in Powhatan, Virginia. She died in 1862 in Rome, Italy. She was buried in National Cemetery, West Point, , New York.

They had the following children:

735 F iii Maria Mayo Scott was born in 1817 in "Hampton Place", Elizabethtown, New Jersey. She died in 1833.
736 M iv John Mayo Scott was born on 18 Apr 1819 in "Hampton Place", Elizabethtown, New Jersey. He died on 23 Sep 1820.
737 F v Virginia Scott was born in 1821 in "Hampton Place", Elizabethtown, New Jersey. She died on 26 Aug 1845.
738 M vi Edward Winfield Scott 1 was born on 28 Mar 1823. He died 2 on 17 May 1827.

Other sources place his birth place as New Jersey where Winfield Scott is known to have lived. However, R. Boling Batte shows he died in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia and that he is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
739 F vii Cornelia Scott was born in 1825. She died in 1886.
740 F viii Marcella (Ella) Scott was born on 21 Jan 1833.
741 F ix Adeline Camilla Scott was born in 1831. She died on 22 Feb 1882.

179. George Scott Pegram 1 (George , George , Daniel , George ) was born about 1775 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. He died in Feb 1848 in Davidson Co., Tennessee.

We have no concrete documentation that George Scott Pegram, Jr. was a son of George Pegram, Jr. of Dinwiddie Co. but by process of elimination, George Pegram, Jr. is the only logical choice for the father of George Scott Pegram, Jr. The tax rolls of Dinwiddie Co. shows the following:

George S. Pegram - 1804 - 1820 taxed on 159a on Namozene Rd. 13 N CH conv. by George Pegram, Jr.

Logically, George S. Pegram obtained the land from George Pegram, Jr. who was probably his father.
