Descendants of George Pegram
Sixth Generation

182. Elisha Dennis (Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1 in 1807 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina.

Elisha married Jane Mimms daughter of Young Mimms and Mary "Polly" Boothe in 1835 in North Carolina. Jane was born 1, 2, 3, 4 in 1808 in North Carolina.

We have not found a marriage record of Elisha and Jane so we can not confirm that she was a Mims or Mimms. However, in the Will of Elisha Dennis dated Nov. 27, 1858 and probated May term 1859, he names James H. Mimms as executor and refers to him as "my friend and brother".

The 1860 Census shows:

Young A. Dennis as HH, age 21; Jane, age 49; William, age 20; Sarah, 18; James, 15; and Monroe, 9.

In 1870, Jane Dennis is shown as HH. Living with her are her son, Joseph Monroe Dennis and her daughter, Sarah Jane Harrington.

They had the following children:

766 F i Mary Dennis was born in Oct 1835.
767 M ii Young A. Dennis was born 1, 2 in 1838 in North Carolina.
  768 M iii William H. Dennis was born 1, 2, 3 in 1842 in North Carolina.

He was probably the William Dennis, age 21, who enlisted in the Civil War on 12 February 1862 in Wake Co., North Carolina. In 1870 the couple were living in the home of William Ellington and wife Ariella. They could not have been married long since Sarah was only 16 years old.
William married Sarah C. Ellington? about 1870 in Wake Co., North Carolina. Sarah was born 1 about 1854.
769 F iv Sarah Jane Dennis was born 1, 2, 3 in 1842 in North Carolina.

In 1870 Sarah Jane Harrington is found living with her mother, Jane Dennis in Wake Co.
Sarah married 1 Sion Harrington son of Charles Gillespie Harrington and Penelope Polk Thomas on 6 Jan 1862 in Wake Co., North Carolina. Sion was born in 1830 in Moore Co., North Carolina. He died 2 on 18 May 1865.

Sion Harrington was the brother of John J. Harrington who married Talitha (Tabitha) Pegram. He enlisted in G Co. 5th Cav Reg. North Carolina at age 32 on July 8, 1862. He died of wounds while a POW 18 May 1865.
  770 M v James Dennis was born 1, 2 in 1844 in North Carolina.
771 M vi Joseph Monroe Dennis was born in 1852. He died in 1902.

183. Luranna (Susanna) Dennis (Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2 in 1810 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. She died before 1880 in Chatham Co., North Carolina.

Luranna married James Stuart (Stewart) about 1829 in North Carolina. James was born 1, 2, 3, 4 about 1807 in North Carolina. He died in 1889.

In 1860, only Malinda and Mary and still at home.

They had the following children:

772 F i Ellendar Stuart (Stewart) was born in Jan 1828.
773 F ii Malinda Jane Stewart was born 1, 2, 3, 4 about 1833 in Chatham Co., North Carolina.

She is shown as age 17 on the 1850 census but on the 1900 census her birthdate is given as May 1846 which is clearly in error.
Malinda married Enoch A. Holt son of Richard Holt and Gilly on 7 Mar 1865 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. Enoch was born 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in Dec 1834 in Chatham Co., North Carolina.

On the 1850 Census of Wake Co., North Carolina, Enoch is found with his family living 2 houses from Elisha Dennis who was the uncle of Malinda Stewart.

In 1870 Enoch Holt and his wife were living in Chatham Co. near her parents. There were no children in the home.

Enoch Holt married his sister-in-law after the death of Malinda. We do not know when Malinda died or when they were married but we do know that Williams Boothe, husband of Mary Isabella, died in 1872. In 1880 Mary is head of household and a widow. Enoch Holt is living alone and shown as a widow also. Although the 1900 census shows the couple have been married for 35 years, this is obviously impossible. Enoch married Malinda in 1865.

The 1910 Census appears to be closer to correct since it shows the couple have been married for 30 years. Mary shows she has had 4 children, all living. These are the Booth children from her first marriage.

He is shown as age 14 on the 1850 census.
774 M iii John A. Stuart (Stewart) was born about 1839. He died before 1870.
775 F iv Mary Isabella (Bell) Stewart was born on 13 Jan 1846. She died on 23 Jul 1917.

184. Malinda Dennis (Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1 about 1815 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina.

Malinda married John William Judd 1 son of William Judd and Elizabeth Solomon. John was born 2 in 1801 in North Carolina. He died on 8 Oct 1862 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina.

The 1950 Census of Wake Co., North Carolina shows:

John W Judd 49
Malinda Judd 35
Elizabeth Judd 16
Matilda Judd 14
Nancy Judd 13
William Judd 11 1838
Henderson Judd 9
John Judd 7 1842
Hope Judd 5 1844
Cap Judd 3 1846
Frances Judd 5/12

They had the following children:

776 F i Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Judd was born in 1834. She died before 1900.
777 F ii Matilda Edna Judd was born 1 in 1835 in North Carolina.

In 1870 she was living with the family of her sister, Elizabeth (Judd) Bright. She apparently never married and may have been retarded.
778 F iii Nancy W. Judd was born in 1837. She died before 1898.
779 M iv William Jefferson Judd was born in 1839.
780 M v Henderson Dennis Judd was born in 1841.
781 M vi John Thomas Judd was born in Feb 1843. He died in 1913.
782 M vii Dallas Polk (Hope) Judd was born in 1845.
783 M viii Lewis Cass Judd was born 1 in 1847 in North Carolina.
784 F ix Melinda Frances Judd was born 1 in 1850 in North Carolina.

She is shown as M. T. Judd on the 1860 Census.

185. Henry J. Dennis 1 (Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 2, 3 on 21 Dec 1818 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. He died on 13 Mar 1896 in Lemon Springs, Lee Co., North Carolina. He was buried in Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Sanford, North Carolina.

The notice of his death is found in "North Carolina Presbyterian", Wilmington, North Carolina, Thursday, April 2, 1896 and reads: "Died: Dennis- on March 13, 1896, at his home, near Lemon Springs, NC, Mr. Henry Jackson Dennis, in his 78th year. Mr. Dennis was an unassuming, conscientious, warm-hearted, Christian gentleman in the full and blessed meaning of that term. He served Buffalo Church as ruling elder for nearly twenty-one years (1875) with great acceptance, faithfulness and efficiency."

Henry married (1) Isabella McIver daughter of Kenneth McIver and Flora Nicholson about 1851. Isabella was born 1 on 26 Feb 1824 in Moore Co., North Carolina. She died on 19 Oct 1867 in Moore Co., North Carolina.

They had the following children:

785 F i Anna Catherine Dennis was born on 1 Oct 1851. She died on 23 Feb 1932.
786 F ii Adelaide (Addie) Dennis was born on 19 Sep 1853. She died on 28 Feb 1921.
787 F iii Margaret Dennis was born on 11 Feb 1855. She died on 12 May 1939.

The 1900 Census reflects there are 3 children in the home, i.e. Minnie, Ada B. and George P. The quality of the 1900 makes the birth dates illegible for Minnie and Ada B.

The 1910 Census shows she has had 4 children with 4 living and this statement appears t be correct. Ada was the only child still remaining at home.

Others have attributed Penelope as a child of John J. Harrington and wife Tabitha, probably because she and her husband were living next to Tabitha in 1910. However, the 1900 Census shows that Penelope (Penny) was the daughter of John's brother, Benjamin Harrington and wife Mary. In 1880 Benjamine and his wife his wife were living next to John J. Harrington and wife Tabitha. Penelope was probably named after their mother whose name was also Penelope.

Tabitha married John J. Harrington 1, 2, 3 son of Charles Gillespie Harrington and Penelope Polk Thomas. John was born 4, 5, 6, 7 in Jun 1838 in North Carolina. He died on 18 Aug 1904. He was buried 8 in Cokesbury Cemetery, Harnett Co., North Carolina.

He is listed as John J. Harrington on the 1880 Census of Harnett Co., Buckhorn, North Carolina, Page 83C shows:

The census shows they have been married for 4 years and have had 2 children, both living. All the children by his first marriage are still at home with the exception of Ida Florence who has already married.

John David was a minister and apparently was transferred a number of times since we find evidence he resided in different areas of eastern North Carolina. Af a presentation of the History of Bethany Methodist Church in Hyde Co., North Carolina, which was given on the 200th aniversary of the church, John David Pegram was listed as a past minister.

John married 2 (1) M. J. Flora Catherine Byrd 1 daughter of Andrew Jackson Byrd and Caroline Shaw on 19 Feb 1873 in North Carolina. M. J.
