The following is from an article appearing in The Virginian Pilot; 9/12/2000 upon the occasion of his appointment as Chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission "Pegram, a retired optometrist, has served on the Chesapeake School Board and on the boards of, or as chairman of, the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission, the Virginia Beach Family Center and the Tidewater Council of Girls Clubs. He is a lay reader at Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church and heads the Society of St. Stephen there. This small group has provided 27,000 meals per year for the past two years to poor people within the congregation's ZIP code. " The following extract from an article appearing in The Virginian Pilot; 8/22/1999, appears to be about his son: "When optometrist Dr. George Pegram III wanted to lend a hand to local schools, he decided to do something that could involve the whole community. The result: All proceeds of eye examinations during the week of Sept. 13-17 will be donated to various local schools." | |

Her birth date as shown on the 1900 Census is May 1881 rather than 1889 as shown in other family records. However, the 1920 census shows her age as 35 which would mean she was born in 1885.
In 1920 she and her daughter are found living with her parents.

Although his death certificate shows his date of birth as 1899, it is possible that this is wrong since he is not shown on the 1900 census of Harnett Co. It seem possible that is birth date is actually 1900, being born after the date of the census.Milton married 2 Ada Frances Tutor 1 daughter of William Randall Tutor and Cornelia Frances Baker on 24 Apr 1926 in Lillington, Harnett Co., North Carolina. Ada was born on 11 Jun 1897. She died on 29 Apr 1974. 2978 M iii Luther Vaton Pegram was born on 22 Nov 1907. He died on 10 Dec 1986.
826. Flora A. Pegram 1 (William H. , Alfred L. , William , John , William , George ) was born 2, 3, 4, 5 on 30 Sep 1880 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. She died 6, 7 on 21 Jun 1950 in Raleigh, Wake Co., North Carolina.
Found among Pegram family papers in the Special Collections Library of Duke University was a photocopy of the obituary of Flora Gilbert. The obituary was undated but read as follows:
"Fuquay Springs, June 22 - Mrs. Flora Gilbert, 70, of Route 1, Fuquay Springs, died in a Raleigh hospital yesterday following an illness of several years. Surviving are five sons, Hardy Gilbert of Knightdale, Earl Gilbert of Raleigh, Ralph Gilbert of Angier and Ozzie and Howard Gilbert, both of Route 4, Raleigh; two brothers, J. W. Pegram of Durham and D. H. Pegram of Route 1, Fuquay Springs; a sister, Mrs. Liddy Holsclaws of Durham; and a half brother, William Pegram of Route 1, Fuquay Springs. Funeral services were held this afternoon from Baptist Grive Church, and interment was in the church cemetery."
The year of death is based on her age given her obituary which is not dated as to the year.
Flora married 1, 2 James David Gilbert son of William Gilbert and Margaret (May) Johnson on 14 Aug 1901 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. James was born 3, 4, 5 about 1859 in North Carolina. He died 6 on 7 Jul 1949 in Harnett Co., North Carolina.
The marriage certificate for the couple give his name as Gilchrist but we do not find the Gilchrist otherwise. Other sources have only shown his name as J. D. Gilbert but the death certificate of his son, Howard Gilbert, identifies him as David Gilbert.
He was 6 months old on the 1860 Census.

Lula was born 1 about 1890 in North Carolina. 2981 M iii Ozzie Jackson Gilbert was born 1, 2 on 8 Dec 1906 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. He died 3 on 27 Oct 1958 in Raleigh, Wake Co., North Carolina. 2982 M iv Ralph Williams Gilbert was born in 1911. 2983 M v Howard Lonnie Gilbert was born 1, 2, 3 on 25 Dec 1919 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. He died 4 on 26 Jul 1987 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. He was buried 5 in Mt. Zion Church Cemeter, Godwin, North Carolina. Howard married Eva Gibbs.
