Her obituary published in The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, Norfolk, Virginia on February 20, 2000 reads in part:
Flora Bray Howell, 96, of Hickory, Chesapeake, formerly of South Norfolk, died Feb. 19, 2000. Mrs. Howell was born in Riddle, Camden County, North Carolina in 1903. She moved to South Norfolk in 1908 and lived there until 1990 when she joined her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and John Maheu, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. In 1991, she accompanied them to Maine and lived on Flying Pond in Vienna, Maine, until 1997, when they moved to Virginia. She was the widow of Alvah B. "Bus" Howell, and daughter of the late, Mamie Shaw Pegram Bray and Jeremiah Garrett Bray. She was a charter member of Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law; two sisters, Virginia Bray Cahoon of Chesapeake and Catherine Bray D'Angelo of Virginia Beach; a brother and sister-in-law, the Honorable Jerry G. Bray and Ruth Crutchfield Bray of Virginia Beach. Her husband and two infant brothers, John David Bray and Rodney Andrew Bray, predeceased her. Mrs. Howell received her Normal Certificate from Trinity College, now Duke University, in Durham, N.C., and her B.S. in education from Madison College, now James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, Va. She taught in the South Norfolk school system from 1923 until her marriage in 1934 and returned to teaching in 1946. She enjoyed an active career as an English teacher and guidance counselor in the South Norfolk and Chesapeake school system until her retirement in 1971. Mrs. Howell served her church as a teacher in the Beginner's Department, positions on the Administrative Board and as a teacher in the Howell Bible Class.
Flora married 1, 2 Alvah B. Howell in 1934. Alvah was born on 31 Oct 1899. He died on 10 May 1947.
