40. Anna Pegram (William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2 about 1781 in Virginia.

In 1860 she is found living next to her daughter, Luranna Stuart. Her son, William is still at home. Unfortunately, the 1860 of Chatham Co. does not even show the on the page showing Anna Dennis.

Anna married 1 Anderson Dennis son of Joseph Dennis and Mary on 12 Oct 1803 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. Anderson was born in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. He died about 1829.

Will of Anderson Dennis dated 11 Mar. 1829

In the name of God, Amen, this eleventh day of March A. D. One thousand eight hundred twentynine I, Anderson Dennis of the county of Chatham & State of North Carolina being in a declining state of health, but in sound mind and memory thanks be to Almighty God for the same, do make this my last will and testament in form and manner as follows, viz.

First I recommend my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian manner and my soul unto the hands of Almighty God that gave it and touching such worldly goods at it both pleased God to bless me with I give and dispose of the same after paying my just debts and burial expenses in the following manner (to wit).

Item 1. I lend unto my dearly beloved wife Anna Dennis the plantation whereon I now live containing 302 1/2 acres more or less, four negroes namely, Robert, Celia, Sarah & Mariah, and their increase with the exception of child Sarah is now lusty with which is to be my daughter Malinda's, all of my stock of cattle, hogs and two mares namely Pigeon and Fly, plantation utensils, household and kitchen furniture and plenteous part of my provisions for the support of my wife and family for one year during her natural life or widowhood and then to be sold and equally divided among my children and their heirs with the exception of the land and child as above mentioned.

Item 2nd I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved son Elisha Dennis one negro man called Squire one tract of land lying in Cumberland County containing one hundred and sixty-six acres, one sorrel horse, bridle and saddle one cow & calf, sow & pigs, bed & furniture and every other article which I have given him to keep house all of which he has in possession.

Item 3rd. I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved daughter Susanny Stuart two negro girls namely Esther & Mariah, one bed and furniture, one horse bridle and saddle, one cow & calf one sow and pigs, and every other article which I have given her to keep house upon all of which she has in possession except horse bridle & saddle, and Mariah which she is to have at the death of my wife.

Item 4th. I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved son William P. Dennis one tract of land called the Sexton place containing one hundred and twenty- five acres the same more or less adjoining James Rollins and others, one negro boy Jerry one sorrel filly named Diner, bridle and saddle, one bed and furniture, one cow & calf, sow and pigs and one half of the tract of land his mother lives upon at her death.

Item 5th. I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved daughter Malinda Dennis one negro girl named Mary and the child Sarah is now lusty with if it lives and does well, if not to be made equal with Susanny out of the property to be sold before the division, one horse bridle and saddle, one cow & calf, sow and pigs, one bed & furniture.

Item 6th. I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved son Henry J. Dennis one tract called the Thomas tract containing one hundred acres the same more or less adjoining Willie Jones and others, one negro boy named Merritt and half of the land my wife lives upon at her death one horse bridle & saddle, bed & furniture, cow & calf, sow & pigs and one hundred dollars to school and board him to be paid out of my estate as my executors see proper.

Item I leave my negro Charles in the hands of my executors to hire out until my children comes of age, or sell if necessity requires it and to be applied to the use of my children. And I appoint my worthy friend Burwell Rollins to be whole & soul executor to this my last will and testament, and do revoke and disannul all other wills heretofore made by me. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand the day and year above written.

The foregoing last will and testament of Anderson Dennis was duly proved in open court by the oath of Avent Cotton a subscribing witness thereto and ordered to be recorded whereupon Burwell Rollins the executor therein named appeared in court and was duly qualified.

He died single without issue.

42. George Washington Pegram 1 (William , John , William , George ) was born 2 on 8 Dec 1809 in probably Cumberland Co., North Carolina. He died 3 on 30 Mar 1884 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. He was buried in Cokesbury Cemetery, Harnett Co., North Carolina.

He is shown as a member of the North Carolina House of Commons as a representative from Cumberland Co. for the 1848, 1850 and 1852 sessions.

George married Sarah Elizabeth McKinnie daughter of Howell McKinnie and Unknown on 1 Mar 1841 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. Sarah was born in Oct 1812 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. She died on 25 Oct 1856. She was buried in Cokesbury Cemetery, Harnett Co., North Carolina.

The name of Sarah's father is from notes found in the Pegram collection at Duke University.

George and Sarah had the following children:

  188 F ii Chloe Hinton Pegram 1 was born 2, 3 on 5 Aug 1844 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. She died on 26 Apr 1904 in Harnett Co., North Carolina.

At the time of the 1900 Census, she is found as a widow living with her sister, Tabitha Anne Harrington.
        Chloe married 1 Rev. Isaac Watts Avent son of William Avent and Esther Watts Clegg on 14 Nov 1895 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. Isaac was born on 19 Sep 1823 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. He died on 25 Oct 1900 in Harnett Co., North Carolina.
189 M iii William Howell Pegram was born on 18 Aug 1846. He died on 9 Apr 1928.
190 M iv John David Pegram was born in Nov 1848. He died on 17 Jan 1915.
  191 F v Sarah E. Pegram 1 was born 2 on 15 May 1851 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. She died on 13 Dec 1886.
192 F vi Mary Catherine Pegram was born on 28 Dec 1855. She died on 1 Dec 1926.

43. Stephen Stephenson Pegram (William , John , William , George ) was born 1 in 1814 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. He died about 1854 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina.

Stephen married 1 Caroline Adams daughter of William Adams and Unknown on 11 Dec 1846 in Wake Co., North Carolina. Caroline was born 2, 3 in 1824 in Wake Co., North Carolina.

She appears to have remarried and had other children. On the 1870 Census of Wake Co., James W. Pegram is shown as head of household. Also in the home is Caroline Stearns or Starnes, age 44, who appears to be his mother. There are also younger children in the home.

44. Alfred L. Pegram (William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2 in 1816 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. He died in 1893.

Alfred married 1, 2 Nancy Arnold daughter of Harwell Arnold and Elizabeth Lanier on 1 Feb 1847 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. Nancy was born 3 in 1829 in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. She died 4 after 1893.

The 1852 tax list for Moore Co., North Carolina shows: Pegram, Geo W for heirs of Arnold, Harvil 0 0 360 400 0 0 indicating that Harvil Arnold owned 360 acres of land in Moore Co. with a value of $400.

Other sources have given her birthdate as 1826.

The 1900 Census of Harnett Co., North Carolina indicates he is single and boarding with a family. In 1920 he is found with the family of L. H. Dean where he is identified as an uncle.
        Stephen married 1 Lizzie Partin on 1 Jun 1910 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. Lizzie was born about 1865. She died before 1920 in Harnett Co., North Carolina.
200 M vii John F. Pegram was born in Dec 1867. He died about 1918.

46. William Pegram Riggan 1 (Mary Pegram , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born in 1761. He died on 29 Dec 1838.

Report of the death of the dec'd., who was a pensioner of the government of the United States, Feb. Cf, 1841, Lucy Riggan is listed as the only heir of the decd., Aug. Ct, 1841. Record also notes the decd. was a soldier in the Revolution and died December 29, 1838 (Aug. CI., 1841).

William married Mary Crenshaw on 16 Nov 1787 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

48. Francis B. Riggan (Mary Pegram , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born on 7 Mar 1764. He died in 1846.

The Will of Francis Riggan was dated 25 Oct 1839, probated November Court 1846 and recorded in WB39:238, Warren County, North Carolina in which he leaves to:

Son Robert Riggan - 30 acres of land on the east end of my land adjoining. Clarissa Pegram, to include the place where he now lives. Daughter Lucretia Harris - that part of my land on at the southwest comer of my lands adjoining. my Spring Branch, including the place where she now lives.

Son Little F. Riggan - the remaining part of my land, with the express understanding that my son Little Daniel Riggan be supported by my son Little F. Riggan during his lifetime.

Remaining property to be sold and proceeds divided among all my children John Riggan, Robert Riggan, Joseph H. Riggan, Lucretia Harris, Little F. Riggan, and Little Daniel Riggan, but the share of my son Little Daniel Riggan is to be under the control of my son Little F. Riggan, and this share shall revert to him at the death of the said Little Daniel Riggan. Executor: son Little F. Riggan. Wit: T. J. Judkins, Thomas W. Pegram.

From his pension application in 1832 we learn that on 10 February 1781 he was drafted into North Carolina Militia and that he re-enlisted on 1 July 1781.

Francis married (1) Ann Harris daughter of Robert Harris and Ann Williamson on 1 Apr 1789 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

15 July 1778 Ann received a deed of gift from her father, for 150 acres on Little Fishing Creek to the mouth of Reedy Creek in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Francis and Ann had the following children:

  203 F ii Lucrecia (Lucretia) Riggan was born in 1795 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died in Aug 1865 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Lucretia is identified as Lucretia Riggan in the Will of her father, Francis B. Riggan, Jr.
        Lucrecia married (1) Henry N. Harris 1 son of Edmond Harris and Unknown on 14 Dec 1819 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Henry was born about 1768 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died in 1838 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Henry N. Harris was the son of Edmond Harris. At this time we have no documentation for his first wife but the only marriage record in Warren Co. that appears to apply is the marriage in 1798 between Henry Harris and Nancy Nichols. After the death of his first wife, he married Lucretia Riggan, the sister of his son-in-law. His Will, dated 15 February 1838 and probated at May Court 1838 in Warren County, North Carolina names wife, Lucretia who is given the use of Negroes Lucy, Jackson, James, Carlin,Fillip, William and Chine, with the rest to be hired out until John Willbon Riggan is twenty-one. After the death of his wife, Lucretia, he leaves his estate to his two grandsons, Christopher Nicholas Riggan and John Wiilbon Riggan.
        Lucrecia married 1 (2) James Olmstead on 20 Jan 1844 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
204 M iii Joseph H. Riggan was born in Jul 1798.
205 M iv Robert Riggan was born about 1800.
  206 M v Little Daniel Riggan was born in 1804 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

He was living with his brother, Littleton F. Riggan at the time of the 1850 census. He never married and left no issue.
207 M vi Littleton F. Riggan was born on 29 Jan 1804. He died on 23 Apr 1882.

Francis married (2) Elizabeth Pegram 1 on 7 Oct 1816 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Elizabeth died before 1830 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Francis married (3) Mary Partin on 13 Apr 1830 in Halifax Co., North Carolina.

49. Daniel Riggan (Mary Pegram , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1765. He died in 1832 in Tennessee. Daniel was counted in a census in 1830 in Wilson Co., Tennessee.

Daniel married 2 Mary Frances Harper 1 on 31 Jan 1798 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Mary was born about 1775. She died in Aug 1849 in Tennessee.

Frances Riggan made her will August 14, 1849 and it was recorded November 21, 1849. [W&I, 1839-1850, p. 140, Wilson Co., Tennessee) She was "wife of DANIEL RIGGAN who died intestate". She names: (1) daughter: POLLY DAVIS; (2) relationship not stated: SAMUEL H. RIGGAN's children; (3) daughter: MARTHA MABRY and her children; (4) executor: Benjamin Tarver. Witnesses were R. D.Sypert and Raymond Proctor.

They had the following children:

209 F ii Mary (Polly) Riggan was born on 22 Sep 1800. She died on 24 May 1859.
210 M iii Samuel Harper Riggan was born on 11 Sep 1803. He died on 14 Jul 1848.

50. Betsy Riggan (Mary Pegram , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1768.

Betsy married Benjamin Robertson (Roberson) on 27 Mar 1812.

They had the following children:

52. Henry (Harris) Pegram (Daniel , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1779 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died in Warren Co., North Carolina.

The following records are found on the administration of the Estate of Henry Pegram. Since Henry did not leave a Will, the only documentation for a child of record is Gideon. However, based on the Census records and by process of elimination, we are calling Henry ( 2 ) a child of Henry. Henry (2) was born in 1806 based on the 1850 Census record.

Henry married 1 Nancy Harris daughter of Newit Harris and Frances on 18 Mar 1799 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

She is identified as Nancy Pegram in the Will of her father, Newit Harris.

They had the following children:

        Patsey married James Harris on 29 Dec 1832 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
  213 F ii Rebecca W. Pegram died before 1850.
        Rebecca married Thomas J. Judkins on 27 Dec 1823 in Franklin Co., North Carolina. Thomas was born 1 in 1801 in North Carolina. He died in 1866.

In 1850, Thomas has 3 minor children living in his home, i.e., Thomas Andrews, age 7, Elizabeth Ingram, age 10 and Lucy Ingram, age 9. Rebeccas is not in the home and these children can not be grandchildren of Rebecca leading us to assume that Rebecca died without issue.

215 M iv Henry Pegram was born in 1806. He died before 1870.
216 M v Gideon Pegram was born on 11 May 1814. He died on 3 Jul 1882.

53. Gideon Pegram (Daniel , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1780 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died after 1850 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina.

Gideon married Delilah Pegram daughter of Edward Pegram and Patty Jean on 10 Feb 1809 in Stokes Co., North Carolina. Delilah was born about 1781 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died after 1850 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina.

They had the following children:

54. Daniel Pegram (Daniel , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1782 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died in 1819 in Stewart Co, , Tennessee.

1820 Census of Stewart Co., TN shows that Daniel is now deceased, i.e.:

Pigram, Lucy Tn. Stewart Co. 1820 200000-23110. We can further see that Daniel and Lucy have only 2 male children, i.e. Nathan Petus and James J. We have identified Ellen, Locky and Delilah as daughters but from the census there appear to have been others.

Daniel married Lucy Milam 1 on 10 Dec 1800 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Stewart Co., Tennessee
Document that the heirs of James Milam signed in court 14 Feb 1817, sharing his estate with his illegitimate daughter Lucy, who married Daniel Pegram (c1779-1819), son of Daniel Pegram (b. c1742) and Agnes Jones. Her mother is unknown. The document header reads:

State of Tennessee, County of Stewart, Know ye when and may we the undersigned subscribers being jointly heirs of the estate of James Milam deceased late of the county aforesaid do agree that our illegitimate sister Lucy Pegrim shall become a lawful heir with us in the estate of our Father the said James Milam deceased and that she is and shall in all points be justly entitled to an equal part of the said estate and we hereby consider her the said Lucy justly entitled to an equal part with us of the said estate which we agree she shall receive and no part be retained from her the said Lucy (illegible) shall be delivered to her when a division of the said estate shall take place Given under our hands this 14 day of Feb, 1817.

55. Mary Pegram (Daniel , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2 on 28 Nov 1783 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died on 7 Jul 1877 in Wayne Co., Indiana. She was buried 3 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Centerville, Indiana.

In 1828, after Johns death, Mary and the children from this second marriage moved to Indiana. They traveled with all of their belongings in 2 one horse wagons. They settled in the site of Old Salisbury, then later moved to Centerville. Their descendants have lived in the area of Wayne Co., ever since. Mary died on 7 July 1877 in Indiana. The children from John's first marriage to Susannah, moved to Carroll Co., Georgia around 1826 as the land was ceded from the Creek Indians.

In 1850, 1860 and 1870, Mary is found living with her daughter, Nancy Crooks, in Center, Wayne Co., Indiana.

Mary married John Medaris son of Charles Medaris and Elizabeth "Betsy" Gregory in 1808 in Stokes Co., North Carolina. John was born about 1765. He died in 1823.

They had the following children:

229 M iii John Fletcher Medaris was born in Nov 1809. He died in 1909.
