Descendants of George Pegram
Fifth Generation
(Continued)

56. Agnes Pegram (Daniel , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1 in 1791 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

In 1830, Agnes was already a widow living in Rockingham Co. The 1830 Cenus shows she has one son under 5, one son under 10 and 1 daughter under 10. This agrees with the 1850 Census except the 1850 Census shows that William is age 17.

Agnes married 1, 2 George Gates on 14 Feb 1820. George died before 1830 in North Carolina.

They had the following children:

233 F i Sally Gates was born 1 in 1824 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

We are not certain at this time if Sally is the daughter of Agnes as found on the 1850 Census of Guilford Co., North Carolina but we find no other female who would appear to match Sally on the 1850 Census. This should be taken as a working hypothesis only at this time.
Sally married 1 Allen Powell in May 1856 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. Allen was born about 1816.
234 M ii Jackson Gates was born 1 in 1827 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.
235 M iii William Gates was born 1 in 1833 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

57. Zachariah Pegram (Daniel , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1 in 1802 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died in Hyde Co., North Carolina.

Zachariah married 1 Cynthia Lancaster on 1 Jan 1824 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Cynthia was born 2, 3 about 1806 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died in Hyde Co., North Carolina.

Cynthia Lancaster was the daughter of Willie Lancaster by his first wife. In 1870, Cynthia was found living with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and William B. Smith.

They had the following children:

236 F i Julia Ann Pegram was born in 1824.
237 M ii Singleton George W. Pegram was born in 1825. He died in 1883.
238 M iii James Alexander Pegram was born in 1825. He died in 1884.
239 M iv Samuel Pegram was born 1, 2 in 1832 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

He apparently died single without issue.
240 F v Amanda Pegram was born in Aug 1834. She died on 23 Dec 1908.
241 M vi Henry Pegram was born 1 in 1836 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

He apparently died single without issue.

He probably died between 1850 and 1860 since we have not found him or any identifiable descendants subsequent to th 1850 Census.
242 M vii Richard Pegram was born 1 in 1841 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

He probably died between 1850 and 1860 since we have not found him or any identifiable descendants subsequent to th 1850 Census.
243 F viii Mary J. Pegram was born in 1844. She died about 1890.

58. John Pegram 1 (George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born on 12 Feb 1771 in Bute Co., North Carolina. He died on 3 Apr 1836 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

We have long known of a family Bible kept by the family of George Pegram and Wilcia (Willie) Harrison Pegram but have now been fortunate enough to hear from a descendant of George Pegram who has a copy of the information from this Bible. It is the only extant record that we are aware of that contains information on the actual birth dates of members of the family of John Pegram and Parthenia Bell. Unless otherwise noted, the birth dates of the children of John Pegram and Parthenia Bell are taken from this Bible record sent to us by James Pegram of Columbus, Ohio whose own records are taken from Bible records kept by his family.

John married Parthenia (aka Parthena & Patty) Bell 1 daughter of Jesse Bell and Shearin about 1790. Parthenia was born on 14 May 1770 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died on 2 May 1851 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

They had the following children:

244 F i Cynthia Pegram was born on 11 Oct 1790. She died about 1834.
245 M ii John Pegram was born on 1 Feb 1792. He died on 4 Jul 1848.
246 M iii Jesse Pegram was born on 23 Aug 1794. He died on 2 Apr 1867.
247 M iv Baker Pegram was born on 22 Dec 1795. He died on 7 Dec 1875.
248 M v William Pegram was born on 25 Apr 1799. He died on 18 Jun 1836.
249 M vi Jacob Pegram was born on 25 May 1799. He died on 21 Apr 1851.
250 M vii George Pegram was born on 17 Aug 1806. He died in 1870.
251 M viii Daniel Pegram was born in 1807. He died on 8 Sep 1858.
252 M ix Elijah Pegram was born on 22 Dec 1812. He died on 8 Jul 1848.

59. William Pegram (George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2 about 1778 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died about 1876 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Shirley Cahoon has provided us with a copy of the administration of the Estate of William Pegram. In May Court of 1877 in Warren Co., North Carolina we have the following:

William G. Egerton, Administrator of William Pegram, Dec. states that upon the death of William Pegram his Estate descended "to his children Allen Pegram, Emily Pegram, Martha Harris, N.P. Harris and Brack, widow of George Brack, all of whom are of full age and residents of said Co., of Warren." We can not explain why the grand-children of deceased parents are not included as devisees.

N. P. Harris is Nancy P. who married Newsom Harris.

We are still unsure about the spouse of Martha (Patsy) Harris but if she was still unmarried at age 42, she probably left no children. The 1850 Census shows:

William Pegram - 72
Nancy Pegram - 63
Martha Pegram - 42
Emeline Pegram - 23
Elizabeth Pegram - 21
Priestly Harris - 15

The 1860 Census for Warren Co., p. 580, shows:

W. Pegram - 85
N. Pegram - 85
E. Pegram - 30

The leaves us with 2 possibilities. Either Martha married between 1850 and 1860 or she is listed wrong on the 1850 Census.

If the 1850 ceneus is correct, then Martha (Patsy) is still single and living at home. We have found no marriage bond in Warren Co. for a Martha or Patsy Pegram to a Harris after the 1850 census that we can identify as this Martha although she is identified as Martha Harriss in her father's probate records and shown as Patsy Harriss on the 1880 Census.

We have not yet identified William on the 1870 Census. We know he was still alive but we can not find him on the 1870 Census of Warren Co.

Note that we have also listed Mildred as a daughter of William. Mildred has previously been shown as a daughter of Henry Pegram. However, based on the 1810 and 1820 Census records of Warren Co., Henry only had 2 daughters. Also, we have been furnished with a report prepared for Robert Boykin which shows Mildred to be a daughter of William. There is no question that the Priestly (Presley) Harris shown living with William and Nancy on the 1850 Census is a son of Mildred and William F. Harris. The younger children of William F. Harris and Mildred Pegram Harris are found living with their father and his new wife in 1850 but Presley is living with his grandfather.

William married Nancy Riggan daughter of Jacob Riggan and Elizabeth Carter on 28 Jan 1808 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Nancy was born 1, 2 in 1787 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

They had the following children:

253 F i Martha (Patsy) Pegram was born 1, 2 in 1808 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
Martha married Harris after 1850. Harris died before 1880 in Warren Co., Iowa.
254 F ii Mildred Pegram died before 1850.
255 M iii Allen Pegram was born in 1818.
256 F iv Nancy P. Pegram was born in 1827.
257 F v Emeline (Emily) Pegram was born 1, 2, 3 in 1827 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
258 F vi Elizabeth Pegram was born in Jan 1829.

60. George Pegram (George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1780 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died in 1832 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

According to George Pegram, his grandfather owned the first cotten gin in Warren Co. He said it was a small operation but "sure beat picking out cotton seed with the fingers." He said he remembered seeing it as a child still standing under a shed.

George married Clarissa Lancaster daughter of Moses Lancaster and Martha Harris on 14 Dec 1803 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Clarissa was born about 1787 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died in 1848 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

They had the following children:

259 M i Thomas W. Pegram was born about 1805. He died in 1847.
260 F ii Elizabeth Pegram was born about 1810. She died before 1845.
261 M iii Baker M. Pegram was born about 1815.
262 M iv George Harris Pegram was born in 1816. He died before 1860.
263 M v James John Pegram was born 1 about 1819 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died before 1855 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
264 F vi Ann F. Pegram was born in 1825.
265 F vii Eliza J.(Ellen) Pegram was born about 1830.

61. Thomas Pegram (George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1782 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died in 1816 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Thomas married Elizabeth (Betsy) Riggan daughter of Jacob Riggan and Elizabeth Carter on 8 May 1811 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Her paternal grand-parents were John Riggan and Ann Bell, the daughter of Thomas Bell and Mary Thompson.

Thomas and Elizabeth had the following children:

266 M i John L. Pegram was born about 1812.
267 F ii Nancy Pegram was born about 1813. She died before 1850.

62. Nancy Pegram (George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1784. She died 1 before 1850 in Robertson Co., Tennessee.

From the Will of George Pegram, Sr. we know that he had one grandson named Micager Bell. Based on Deed dated 24 Feb 1857 wherein John W. Riggan, Agt. for Geo. W. Bell,, Rebecca Bell & Caroline Bell to John L. Pegram for $23 conveyed their undivided right in the Estate of George's daughters, in 126 acre tract. It is now confirmed that these are children of Nancy Bell and her husband Jacob Bell.

At the same time we find the following: 24 Feb 1857 - John W. Riggan as Agt. for James Moore & Cynthia Moore (his wife) of Chatham Co., TN to John L. Pegram for $7.80 - right & title to 126 acre tract (description as above). Wit. Thom. A. Montgomery, Nathl. Nicholson ( jurat). Proved Feb 1857. Reg. 20 Mar 1857 (DB:31:653). Cynthia Bell married James Moore and she is identified as the daughter of Nancy Bell and Jacob Bell in her father's Will.

Nancy married 1 Jacob Bell son of Jesse Bell and Shearin on 24 Dec 1800 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Jacob was born 2 in 1773 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died in 1854 in Cheatham Co., Tennessee.

The 1850 Census of Robertson Co., Tennessee shows Jacob Bell, age 77; Rebecca, age 40; Caroline, age 38; Parthenia, age 37; George, age 29. All were born in North Carolina. The part of Robertson Co. where Jacob lived later was incorporated into Cheatham Co. where he later died.

The Will of Jacob Bell dated July 20, 1854 and probated in Cheatham County, Tennessee reads as follows:

I, Jacob Bell to make and publish this as my last Will and Testament hereby revoking and making void all other wills by me at anytime made.

Jacob Bell (Seal)

Signed, Sealed and delivered in the presence of

W. W. Williams
J. D. Nicholson

Jacob Bell married Nancy Pegram, daughter of George Pegram, Sr. of Warren County, North Carolina. Based on this Will, it appears that his son Micajah has predeceased his father. It is obvious his wife Nancy is now deceased which is confirmed by the 1850 Census.

Since she is not named in his Will, it would appear that Parthena may have died between 1850 and 1854.

They had the following children:

268 F i Elizabeth Bell was born in 1802.
269 F ii Cynthia Bell was born in 1806. She died after 1880.
270 F iii Rebecca Bell was born 1, 2 about 1810 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
271 F iv Caroline Bell was born 1, 2 about 1812 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
  272 F v Parthenia Bell was born in 1813.
273 M vi George W. Bell was born 1, 2 about 1821 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

In 1860 George is found living with his 2 spinster sister, Rebecca and Caroline, at the homeplace in Cheatham, Tennessee. In 1870 they are still together, living next door to their sister, Cynthia Moore..
274 M vii Micajah Bell was born before 1825 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

We have found no descendants of Micajah Bell but did find a Micajah on one TN. census record. However, Thomas Brewer has the remnants of an old Bible that is badly torn and mostly illegible but he has sent the following note:

"What I can make out in the Bible are the names: Charles Bell and ___ Colclough who were married April 11, 18__. Then the name Pegram, and there is a date below it, February 4th, __ _ _. Do you have a marriage date for Parthenia Bell and John Pegram. Hopefully it is February 4 th. Macijah Bell married ____ Lee. Issac Nee___. Luke Senter. Patrick Barr. ___..mas Bell (Thomas) departed this life on Sunday __ day of February and looks like was 43 yrs. old. Jesse Bell, has October under his name. Nancy ___ has October under her name. Elizabeth, the name Bedsoe, may have been a marriage. Benjamin Colclough."

He was named in the Will of his grandfather, George Pegram, who died in Warren Co., North Carolina in 1825.

66. Elizabeth Pegram 1, 2 (Gideon , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born in 1785 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died after 1870.

Although the sons of Peyton Vaughan and his wife Elizabeth Vaughn apparently left home, they also returned. It is possible that when the following deed was executed, they were simply away at school.

By Deed dated April 12, 1841, William T. Vaughan of Petersburg, Virginia; John J. Vaughan of Wake Co., NC and James M. Vaughan of Warren Co., NC, "all tenants in common of a piece of land left to them by their grandfather, Gideon Pegram" conveyed same to Thomas W. Pegram for $120 each. (DB28:284) Thomas W. Pegram was the husband of their sister, Martha Vaughan.

On the 1850 census of Warren Co., North Carolina, William Vaughan, age 34, and James Vaughan, age 32, both living at home with their parents.

Elizabeth married 2 Peyton Vaughan 1 on 20 Apr 1809 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Peyton was born in 1782 in Virginia. He died after 1870.

In 1870, Peyton and Elizabeth are found living next to the families of their 2 sons, John J. and James M.

The 1850 Census of Warren Co. shows his occupation to be a school teacher.

They had the following children:

275 F i Martha Ann Vaughan was born in 1810. She died after 1880.
276 M ii John J. Vaughan was born in 1815.
277 M iii William Thomas Vaughan 1 was born 2 in 1816 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died in May 1867 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

William Thomas Vaughan apparently never married. His Will probated May, 1867 in Warren Co., North Carolina leaves to "my father and mother Peyton Vaughan and Elizabeth Vaughan, the tract of land where they now live"; to "my brother James M. Vaughan" lend all the land east of the new line I have just made for his lifetime with reversion to his children, but reserving the lifetime right of my parents. To his brother John J. Vaughan he left "choice of the two tracts just now made, for his lifetime with reversion to his son, James M. Vaughan" and his "stock". He left another tract to his sister Marthy Ann Pegram.
278 M iv James Madison Vaughan was born on 7 Nov 1817. He died on 4 Nov 1886.

67. Martha L. (Patsey) Pegram (Gideon , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1 in 1793 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

This conflicts with other souces which give her birth date as 1782.

Martha married Benjamin Nicholson 1 son of Urbane Nicholson and Mary on 17 Mar 1812 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Benjamin was born 2 about 1788 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died 3 after 1853.

They had the following children:

279 M i Gideon Wesley Nicholson was born on 7 Jul 1813.
280 M ii James Nicholson was born in 1815 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died in 1859 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
281 F iii Mildred Jane Nicholson was born about 1824. She died before 1853.
282 M iv Nathaniel A. Nicholson was born in 1820.
283 M v Benjamin Christopher Nicholson was born in 1823. He died in 1859.
284 M vi Wyatt Everett Nicholson was born in 1826. He died on 7 May 1864.
285 M vii William Andrew J. Nicholson was born on 17 Dec 1835. He died on 30 Jan 1904.

70. Delilah Pegram (Edward , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1781 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died after 1850 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina.

Delilah married Gideon Pegram son of Daniel Pegram and Agnes Jones on 10 Feb 1809 in Stokes Co., North Carolina. Gideon was born about 1780 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died after 1850 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina.

They had the following children:

286 M i Daniel Asbury Pegram is printed as #217.
287 M ii Henry J Pegram is printed as #218.
288 F iii Elizabeth Pegram is printed as #219.
289 F iv Martha Jane Pegram is printed as #220.
  290 F v Nancy J. Pegram is printed as #221.

71. Nancy Rand Pegram (Edward , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born on 18 Jun 1788 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. She died on 25 May 1858 in Timber Creek, Marshall Co., Iowa.

Nancy married (1) David Barrow Ferguson in 1807 in North Carolina. David was born on 7 Mar 1783 in Stokes Co., North Carolina. He died on 17 Aug 1834 in Owen Co., Indiana.

The following item appeared in Sonoma Co. Tribune Healdsburg, California on April 6, 1889:

"Mr. W.W. Ferguson, sent us this interesting bit of history concerning his family; "My father, David B. Ferguson and Nancy Pegram married in 1807; had 6 children, 3 girls and 3 boys; I'm the eldest b. 12/13/1810; I married 11/15/1832; we celebrated our Golden anniversary on 11/15/1882; my brother J.J. Ferguson and wife, celebrated his Golden anniversary 3 1/2 years after my wife and I. My brother, J.M. Ferguson and wife, had their Golden anniversary on 10/16/1888; J.J. lives at Ferguson, a little town in Marshall Co. Iowa, south of Marshall City; Jos. M., resides in Mannig, Carroll co., Iowa."

David and Nancy had the following children:

291 F i Martha Jean Ferguson was born on 3 Sep 1808. She died on 2 Feb 1852.
292 M ii William Washington Ferguson was born on 13 Dec 1810. He died on 9 Mar 1896.
293 M iii John Jaynes Ferguson was born on 9 May 1814. He died on 23 Mar 1899.
294 F iv Polly (Mary) Pegram Ferguson was born in Apr 1816.
295 M v Joseph Martin Ferguson was born on 18 Apr 1820. He died on 27 Jun 1896.
296 F vi Nancy Williams Ferguson was born on 27 Aug 1822. She died in 1863.

Nancy married (2) Samuel Jewel about 1840. Samuel was born about 1788.

72. John Pegram (Edward , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1 on 19 Jun 1790 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died on 26 Feb 1851 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. John was counted in a census 2 in 1850 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

The 1850 Census of Guilford Co., NC shows John, age 60, Elizabeth 43, with his 2 youngest sons, Frank F. age 15 and Alex M. age 11.

John married (1) Candace Walker on 21 Sep 1813. Candace was born on 2 Feb 1795. She died on 11 Oct 1824.

They had the following children:

297 F i Elizabeth Pegram was born 1 on 16 Dec 1814 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. She died on 30 Jan 1858 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. She was buried in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

Her tombstone inscription reads "Lacy J".
Elizabeth married John B. Dwiggins son of Robert Dwiggins and Sarah Dillon on 18 Mar 1852 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. John was born 1, 2, 3 on 24 Sep 1809 in Stokes Co., North Carolina. He died on 26 Feb 1897 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. He was buried in Bethel United Methodist Church, Stokesdale, Guilford Co., N. C..

He was apprently married before since the 1860 Census shows a number of children in the family born before they were married.

He remarried and his second wife was also named Elizabeth as shown by the 1880 Census.
298 M ii Allen Walker Pegram was born on 13 Jan 1823. He died on 13 Jul 1911.
299 F iii Lucy Pegram was born on 21 Jul 1820. She died on 31 Mar 1861.
