262. George Harris Pegram (George , George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1 in 1816 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died before 1860 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

George married 1 Ann Mary Laughter daughter of John L. Laughter and Ann Hunt on 14 Feb 1838 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Ann was born 2, 3 in 1818 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died in Jan 1908.

In 1870, Ann is found as a widow. Only George Lewis Walter Pegram remains at home. Also in the home is Mary Williams, age 10, obviosly the daughter of Elizabeth Pegram Williams.

They had the following children:

  1142 M ii John Laughter Pegram 1 was born 2 in May 1841 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

He was killed during Civil War and buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. He was never married.
1143 F iii Elizabeth A.(Betsy) (Pattie) Pegram was born in Mar 1843. She died on 8 Mar 1920.
1144 M iv Mitchell Satterwhite Pegram was born in Aug 1845. He died on 7 Sep 1916.
1145 M v George Lewis (Louis) Walker Pegram was born on 31 Oct 1856. He died on 15 Oct 1936.

264. Ann F. Pegram 1 (George , George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 2 in 1825 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

In the partition of the Estate of her father, George Pegram in 1836, Ann F. Pegram was awarded her share, referred to in the probate records as share 6. She was then a minor and later tried to get an accounting for her share as evidenced by subsequent court records, i.e.:

Aug., Ct., 1841. Drake renewed his bond as gdn. of Ann F. and Eliza Pegram;
Aug. Ct., 1841. Drake filed a gdn. account for all three wards;
Aug. Ct., 1841. Gdn. accounts of Ann F. and Eliza J. Pegram ordered to be audited;
August Court - 1842: Accounts ordered settled of E. D. Drake as gdn. of James J., Ann F. and Eliza J. Pegram; and
Aug. Ct., 1842 Harvey M. Bobbitt and wife brought suit against Edwin D. Drake, Matthew M. Drake and Nathan Milam for debts.

Note: While Ann is not named as the wife of Harvey M. Bobbitt in the suit against Edwin D. Drake, et al, there seems little doubt as to her identity based on a deed executed by Ann Bobbitt in the partition of the estate of her great-aunts in 1856 as shown below.

By deed dated 4 Oct 1856 Ann Bobbitt to John L.. Pegram for $8 - her right to 126 acre tract adjoining lands of William Pegram, Joseph Riggan, Martha Pegram and other - tract known as the Sarah & Lucretia Pegram tract. Wit: Wm. C. Clanton, Peter E. Robertson (jurat) Proved Nov Ct. 1856, Reg. 10 Feb. 1857, (Warren Co., North Carolina DB31:617)

In 1860, Ann is listed as HH. The only children in the home are Josephine (shown as J. H. age 12) and a young daughter, listed as L. Bobbitt, age 1.

Ann married Harvey (Harry) M. Bobbitt 1 son of William Bobbitt and Winifred "Winny" Bennett on 9 Mar 1842 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Harvey was born in 1820 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died before 1860. Harvey was counted in a census in 1850 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

The 1850 Census has Harvy indexed as Harry Bobbitt. He is age 30 and Ann is age 25. They have 3 daughters: Elizabeth, age 6, F___ age 4 and Josephine, age 2. Either this record or his Civil War record is in error.

He enlisted in on 10 June 1862 in Richmond, Virginia when his age was given as 46. He became a POW and was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland in Oct. 1864. He was exchanged at Camp Lee, Virginia on 26 January 1865.

They had the following children:

265. Eliza J.(Ellen) Pegram (George , George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2 about 1830 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

By deed dated 21 Nov 1856 - William P. Stallings and Eliza, his wife, to John L.. Pegram for $ 8 - their right and title to 126 acre tract (description as in deed above). Wit: Wm. H. Cheek. Proved Nov Ct. 1856. Reg 10 Feb 1856. (DB31:620)

Eliza married William Plummer Stallings on 26 Jan 1847. William was born 1, 2, 3 about 1823 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

At the time of the 1880 Census, only Elizabeth, John A. and Sallie are living at home.

They had the following children:

1151 F ii Elizabeth (Betty) Jackson Stallings was born in May 1854. She died in Aug 1907.
1152 M iii Robert B. Stallings was born about 1859. He died on 30 Dec 1937.
  1153 F iv Eliza Stallings was born 1, 2 about 1863 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
        Eliza married 1 Goodman W. Shearin in 1904 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Goodman was born 2 about 1861 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

According to the 1910 Census, the couple have been married for 6 years. Eliza has had 3 children but none are living.
1154 M v John Antley Stallings was born in May 1866. He died on 26 Feb 1955.
1155 F vi Sallie Ann Stallings was born on 12 Sep 1871. She died on 10 Jun 1956.

266. John L. Pegram (Thomas , George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2 about 1812 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

John's father died when he was very young. He lived with his three aunts, Sarah "Sally", Martha, and Lucretia Pegram, the daughter's of George Pegram, who never married. He did not marry until after their deaths when he was age 42. He then began buying the interest of the other Pegrams to the family properties in Warren Co.,and eventually owned all the land that had originally been part of his grandfather, George Pegram's home place.

John married Martha Jane Robertson daughter of James G. Robertson and Martha Jones on 19 Dec 1854 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Martha was born 1, 2 about 1834 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died before Jun 1898 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

They had the following children:

His name appears as John L. on the 1900 Census of Warren Co. The Census shows the couple have been married for 3 years and have no children. Living with them is F. G. Harris, b. Mar. 1830 who is identified as Mother-in-Law.
        Jackson married Sarah F. Harris daughter of Kinchen Harris and Fanny Shearin on 19 Apr 1897 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Sarah was born 1, 2, 3 in Aug 1853 in North Carolina. She died in 1932 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Sarah gave her birth date as 1859 on the 1900 Census but the earlier records indicate she was probably born closer to 1853.
  1161 M vi Willie Gray (Bill) Pegram was born 1 in 1869 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died about 1891 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

He became a lawyer and worked in Virginia prior to his death. He never marred and died at his father's home and is buried on the family home place in Warren Co., North Carolina.
  1162 F vii Jane L. (Missy) Pegram was born 1 in 1872 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died in Warren Co., North Carolina.
        Jane married Henry Edwin Marshall son of Henry J. Marshall and Lucretia F.. Henry was born 1, 2 in Oct 1873 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

He was still living at the time of the 1900 census.
1163 M viii Vendor Dowley Colorado Braxton Pegram was born on 15 Oct 1875. He died on 5 Jul 1956.

267. Nancy Pegram 1 (Thomas , George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born about 1813 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died before 1850.

Guardianship records found in the North Carolina State Archives reflect that Joseph Walker was appointed as guardian of Nancy K. Pegram and John L. Pegram, minor orphans.

Nancy married Presley Rooker son of William Rooker and Nancy White on 8 Jul 1831 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Presley was born 1 in 1808 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Nancy died prior to 1850 when we find Presley remarried to Susan whose age is given as 21. In 1880, Susan has died and he is single. The census further reflects that he is crippled. Jane, age 46, is also living in the home and is identified as having "nuralgia".

They had the following children:

  1165 F ii Jane E. Rooker was born 1, 2, 3 in 1834 in North Carolina.

In 1858 she executed a Deed to John L. Pegram where her name is given as Jane E. Her sister Martha exeuteed the Deed as Martha C.

  1167 F iv Mary Rooker was born 1, 2 in 1838 in North Carolina.
1168 M v William Thomas Rooker was born on 21 Mar 1844. He died on 2 May 1911.

268. Elizabeth Bell (Nancy Pegram , George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1 in 1802 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

Jacob Bell names his grandchildren, John Evans and Lucy Evans, indicating there was another daughter.

Elizabeth married Miles W. Evans on 31 Jan 1839 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Miles was born 1, 2, 3 in 1804 in North Carolina.

In 1860, Miles is found in Robertson Co., Tennessee with his second wife, shown only as S. who is 20 years younger than her husband. Lucy and John are still at home, together with children by the second marriage.

In 1870 Miles is found as a widow. In the home are his daughter Lucy and the children by his second marriage. The oldest child is 13 indicating he probably remarried by 1856. His son, John J. Evans, is living next door.

They had the following children:

269. Cynthia Bell 1 (Nancy Pegram , George , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3, 4 in 1806 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died after 1880 in Cheatham Co., Tennessee. Cynthia was born in 1806 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

James Moore and his wife Cynthia Bell moved to Cheatham Co., Tennessee.

Cynthia married James C. Moore 1 on 7 Jan 1828 in Warren Co., North Carolina. James was born 2 in 1800 in North Carolina. He died before 1870 in Cheatham Co., Tennessee.

He is on the 1860 Census but is not found on the 1870 Census.

They had the following children:

1171 M i Benjamin B. Moore was born on 19 Jan 1829. He died on 22 Jun 1893.
1172 F ii Mary Moore was born in 1831.
  1173 F iii Elizabeth Moore 1 was born 2, 3 in 1833 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

She apparentlly did not marry. She is still living at home with her mother at the time of the 1880 Census.

The 1870 Census varies in that it shows her age as 33.

1175 F v Cynthia A Moore was born in 1837. She died before 1875.
1176 F vi Louisa Moore was born in 1840.
1177 F vii Julie A Moore was born in 1847. She died before 1900.
1178 M viii Charles M Moore was born on 11 Jan 1847. He died on 10 Mar 1917.
1179 F ix Josephine Moore was born in 1855.

Martha married 1 Thomas W. Pegram son of George Pegram and Clarissa Lancaster on 14 Jun 1827 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Thomas was born about 1805 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died in 1847 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

276. John J. Vaughan 1 (Elizabeth Pegram , Gideon , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3, 4 in 1815 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

On the 1850 Census of Granville Co., North Carolina, he is identified as a "manufacturer". In 1870, John is a widow, living next to his parents. The children at home are Elizabeth, Peyton and Rebecca.

John married 2, 3 Mary Agnes Allen 1 daughter of Turner Allen and Martha Montgomery on 21 Mar 1845 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Mary was born 4, 5 in 1829 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died before 1870.

She is identified as a granddaughter in the Will of her grandfather, William Montgomery which also identified her as the wife of John J. Vaughan. She is then identified as a daughter in the Will of her father, Turner Allen which was probated July Court, 1889 in Warren Co., North Carolina. The will of her father shows she is already deceased.

Her paternal grandparents were Vincent Allen and wife Mary Bowdin of Lunenburg Co., Virginia who resettled in Warren Co., North Carolina.

They had the following children:

  1190 F ii Martha A. Vaughan was born 1, 2, 3 in 1848 in North Carolina.

In 1880 he was single, living in the home of Sallie Flemming.
  1194 F vi Rebecca S. Vaughan was born 1, 2 in 1861 in North Carolina.

278. James Madison Vaughan (Elizabeth Pegram , Gideon , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2 on 7 Nov 1817 in Warren Co., North Carolina. He died on 4 Nov 1886 in Nash Co., North Carolina.

The following is from an article about his son-in-law,

"..James Madison Vaughan, obtained his education in public and private schools and devoted his life to farming in Nash County, where he died November 4, 1886. He served in the Civil War, being on duty at Camp Holmes, near Raleigh, North Carolina. He always supported the Democratic party and he belonged to the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he served on the board of stewards and was also a teacher in the Sunday school."

James married Mourning Boddie Hilliard daughter of James Crawford Hilliard and Mary Ann Ruffin on 14 Nov 1860 in Nash Co., North Carolina. Mourning was born 1, 2 on 21 Dec 1835 in Nash Co., North Carolina. She died on 29 Jul 1917.

In 1900 Mourning is found as a widow. The census shows she has 2 living children, Mary and Lucy who are still single and living at home. Also living with Mourning are Mary Hilliard and Walter Hilliard who are identified as her brother and sister.

They had the following children:

  1195 F i Mary A Vaughan was born 1, 2 in Oct 1864 in Nash Co., North Carolina. She died on 15 Jan 1924 in Nash Co., North Carolina.

In 1920, her mother has died and she is living with her uncle, Walter Hilliard and her aunt Mary Hilliard. She apparently never married and had no issue.

Her death certificate shows her birth year as 1863.
  1196 F ii Lucy H. Vaughan was born 1, 2, 3 in Aug 1865 in Nash Co., North Carolina.
        Lucy married 1 Henry Andrew Battle son of Lawrence Battle and Elizabeth Taylor on 4 Mar 1908 in Nash Co., North Carolina. Henry was born on 25 May 1866 in Nash Co., North Carolina.

The following is from Henderson, Archibald, North Carolina, the Old North State and the New; Chicago: Lewis Publishing Co., 1941:

Henry Andrew Battle, who resides two and one-half miles northeast of Red Oak, on the highway between Halifax and Nashville, has always devoted his attention to agricultural pursuits since attaining his majority. He was born In Nash County, near Whitakers, May 25, 1866, and is a son of Lawrence and Elizabeth(Taylor) Battle, also natives of Nash County. The father was born near Hilliardston in October, 1834, and the mother near Whitakers in 1833. Lawrence Battle acquired his education in an academy in Lewiston and engaged in agricultural pursuits In Nash County until a few years prior to his death in 1912. He always voted with the Democratic party and filled the office of justice of the peace. His religious belief was indicated in his consistent membership in the Baptist church. To him and his wife were born five children : Mary, the widow of James Exum, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Tempe Perry, the wife of Samuel S. Alsop, of Enfield, Halifax County, North Carolina; John Wilkes Booth, who died in 1915; Henry Andrew, of this review; and Elizabeth Frances, who became the wife of Allan Whitaker and who is now deceased.

After attending the public schools of Nash County, Henry A. Battle took up farming, which he has since followed, occupying a pleasant home two and one-half miles northeast of Red Oak. He produces the crops best adapted to soil and climatic conditions here and employs progressive methods in the cultivation of his land. His political allegiance Is given to the Democratic party.

On the 4th of March, 1908, Mr. Battle was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Hilliard Vaughan, daughter of James Madison and Mourning Boddie (Hilliard) Vaughan, of Red Oak township, Nash County, North Carolina. Her father was born in Warren County, North Carolina, November 7, 1817, and was a son of Peyton Vaughan who was born in Greensville County, Virginia, and there pursued his education. After attaining his majority he removed to Warren County, North Carolina, where he taught school, particularly higher mathematics. His son, James Madison Vaughan, obtained his education in public and private schools and devoted his life to farming in Nash County, where he died November 4, 1886. He served in the Civil War, being on duty at Camp Holmes, near Raleigh, North Carolina. He always supported the Democratic party and he belonged to the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he served on the board of stewards and was also a teacher in the Sunday school. He wedded Mourning Boddie Hilliard, of Red Oak township, Nash County. She was born December 21, 1836, in Nash County where Mr. and Mrs. Battle now reside, and she acquired her education under private tutors at home and in a private school in Warrenton. She died July 29, 1917. To Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan were horn five children : Mary Anne, who is deceased ; Lucy Hilliard, the wife of Henry Andrew Battle; Tempe William, who became the wife of Cicero F. Ellen and who has passed away; Olivia Celina, deceased; and Samuel Johnson, who has also departed this life.

In tracing the ancestry of Mrs. Battle it is learned that her great-great-grandfather was Isaac Hilliard, who was born in 1738 and died in 1790. He lived on the Woodlawn Plantation in Nash County and served as an officer in the Revolutionary War. He was educated in the College of William and Mary and in 1765 he married Leah Crawford, who was born in 1743 In Surry County, Virginia, and died in 1826. James Hilliard, the great-grandfather of Mrs. Battle, was born in 1768 and was educated by English tutors, by tutors from the North and by attending a northern college. He founded Hilliiardston Academy at Hllliardston, North Carolina. His wife was Mourning Boddie. Isaac Hilliard fought at the battle of Guilford Court House In the Revolutionary War while serving as a captain of infantry. The grandfather of Mrs. Battle in the maternal line was James Crawford Hilliard, who was born in 1806 and died in 1860. He was educated at the University of Virginia and became a planter. In 1835 he wedded Mary Ann Ruffln.

  1198 F iv Olivia Celina Vaughan was born 1 in 1869 in Warren Co., North Carolina.
  1199 M v Samuel J. Vaughan was born 1 in 1874 in Nash Co., North Carolina. He died before 1900.

279. Gideon Wesley Nicholson 1 (Martha L. (Patsey) Pegram , Gideon , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3 on 7 Jul 1813 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

He was named after his grandfather, Gideon Pegram.

Gideon married 1 (1) Nancy T. Hicks on 28 Nov 1836 in Warren Co., North Carolina. Nancy was born 2 in 1820 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died on 10 Oct 1861.

Gideon married 2, 3 (2) Emily Shepherd Conrad 1 on 12 Mar 1862 in Yadkin Co., North Carolina. Emily was born in 1833.

She was from Yadkins Co., North Carolina

They had the following children:

  1200 F i Lillie Conrad Nicholson was born 1, 2 on 1 Feb 1863. She died on 16 Feb 1933. She was buried in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Littleton, Halifax Co., North Carolina.

She never married.

Rebecca Dozier lists her death date as 1924.
1201 M ii William Henry Nicholson was born on 20 Nov 1864. He died on 21 Jun 1926.
  1202 M iii Benjamin Isaac Nicholson 1 was born 2, 3 on 30 Apr 1867. He died on 16 Feb 1933 in Laurinburg, North Carolina.

He lived in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
        Benjamin married Ida Blue St. John.
  1203 F iv Elizabeth Martha (Bettie) (Mattie) Nicholson 1 was born 2, 3 in 1869. She died after 1936.

She never married.
1204 M v Dr. Hugh Gideon Nicholson was born on 29 Aug 1871.
1205 M vi Nathaniel Gwynn Nicholson was born on 25 Feb 1875.

281. Mildred Jane Nicholson 1 (Martha L. (Patsey) Pegram , Gideon , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born 2 about 1824 in Warren Co., North Carolina. She died before 1853.

Mildred married Charles Leonard Thomas on 12 Jan 1844. Charles was born 1 about 1820 in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina.

Charles Leonard Thomas was from Mecklenburg Co., Virginia.

They had the following children:

  1206 M i Benjamin S Thomas was born about 1845. He died before 1850 in Warren Co., North Carolina.

He is not shown with the family in 1850 so he apparently died as a child.
