"Dr. James M. Judd had the usual experiences of the farrmhred boy, He attended the Holly Springs public schools and at eighteen years of age began teaching in a rural one-room school for a two months' term. He taught in one school in Chatham County and two schools in Wake County. Ambitious to acquire a broader. education, he entered Trinity (now Duke) University and after two years there decided years there decided to study medicine, enrolling as a student in Baltimore Medical College, the medical department of the University of Maryland, from which he was graduated. He met the expenses of his college course with borrowed money, but it is characteristic of Doctor Judd that he has never allowed obstacles or difficulties to bar his path if they could be overcame by determinded and honest effort.
Beginning his professional work in Wake County, Doctor Judd has for forty years been a General practitioner here and since 1898 has made his home on a farm near Varina. Throughout this entire Period he has been a community builder and a leader in the development. of Fuquay Springs and Varina, having been one of the founders of the hatter town and an active participant in every progressive movement of this section. Doctor Judd started modestly to engage. in agricultural pursuits and is now one of the extensive tobacco planters of this area, with large land holdings in Wake and Harnett counties. In 1914 he aided in organizing the Bank of Varina, became its first vice president and is now president. He is also the founder and vice president of the Varina Knitting devoted to the manufacture of hosiery, and helped build the first tobacco warehouse, the Varina Brick Warehouse, and also became the builder and owner of the second, the Star Tobacco Warehouse of Varina, In his farming operations he specializes in tobacco and follows thoroughly modern and progressive methods in the cultivation of his land and the care of his crops.
Doctor Judd was married December 25, 1898, to Amorette Adelle Ballentine, a daughter of William Marshall Ballentine, of one of the prominent families of Wake County. Mrs. Judd is famous for her culinary skill and has taken numerous prizes at the North Carolina State Fair on breads, cakes and other foods. Doctor and Mrs, Judd have 6 living children, the eldest being Agnes Adelle, a graduate of Duke University, where she received the Bachelor of Arts degree and became a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She is now the. wife of Joseph B. Currin, of Roxboro, North Carolina; Edith Lucille, the second in order of birth, was graduated from Duke University with the Bachelor of Arts degree suma cum laude and also became a member of Phi Beta Kappa, She is the wife of Harold E. Parker, a hosiery manufacturer of Varina. Dr. Glenn Ballentine Judd is a graduate of Duke University and of Vanderbilt Medical Collage, receiving the M. D. degree from the latter institution, and is now engaged in the practice of his chosen profession at Varina. Violette Katharine, who was also graduated from Duke University with the Bachelor of Arts degree, is the wife of the Rev. Moody L. Smith, a Methodist minister who is engaged in the work of his holy calling among the mountain people of western North Carolina; James Lewis, who graduated from the North Carolina State College on the completion of a course in textile engineering, is engaged in hosiery manufacture with the Varina Knitting Mills; Frances Elizabeth, the youngest of the family, attended Duke University in 1934-35, was graduated in home economies from The Woman's College of the University of North Carolina in 1938, was an administrative student dietitian at Florida State College for Women in 1938-39, and is now a dietitian in the Greensboro public schools, Greensboro, North Carolina,
Both Doctor Judd and his wife take a helpful part in the work of the Methodist church. He has assisted in building two Methodist churches in this section, becoming a charter member of one and actively supporting its progress for more than thirty-five years, He is a Democrat in politics but without political ambitions. His interest in education has been outstanding, He has served as chairman of the local school board for thirty years and has worked for the improvement of the schools, both through the early days and in the consolidation era. He participated in all war work, including the Red Cross and War Savings, and was on the Wake County medical advisory board. He is an ex-president of the Wake County Medical Society and of the District Medical Society and belongs to the North Carolina Medical Society and the American Medical Association."

His first name has been read as Henry but in truth, I can not tell what it is on any of the census records. His marriage license was under Dennis Byrd and he is listed as Dennis Byrd on the 1880 Census. Flossie is head of household on the 1920 Census but it shows she is married instead of being a widow. However, we have not been able to find a Henry or Dennis Byrd on the 1920 Census - anywhere. If anyone recognizes this family we do hope you will contact us.
