Descendants of George Pegram
Seventh Generation

766. Mary Dennis 1, 2 (Elisha Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 3, 4, 5, 6 in Oct 1835 in North Carolina.

In 1910, Mary is found as a widow living with her son, Dr. James R. Rogers.

Mary married James W. F. Rogers on 21 Apr 1856 in Wake Co., North Carolina. James was born 1, 2, 3 in Nov 1827 in North Carolina. He died before 1910 in Wake Co., North Carolina.

The 1900 census reflects the couple have been married for 44 years.they have had 8 children with 5 living. One of the deceased children is presumed to be Mary F. Rogers who is shown on the 1870 Census as age 1 but does not appear on the 1880 Census. However, it should be noted that another souce indicates that she married a John B. Wood of Harnett Co. If so, we simply can not account for the fact that she does not appear on the 1880 Census of North Carolina.

They had the following children:

2862 M i William J. Rogers was born 1 about 1857 in Wake Co., North Carolina.
2863 M ii John C. (L.) Rogers was born 1 about 1861 in Wake Co., North Carolina.
2864 M iii Dr. James Rufus Rogers was born in Oct 1866.
2865 F iv Mary F. Rogers was born about 1869 in Wake Co., North Carolina. She died before 1880 in Wake Co., North Carolina.
2866 F v Lillia D. Rogers was born in 1872 in Wake Co., North Carolina.
2867 M vi Dr. Carey Pegram Rogers was born on 7 Jan 1878. He died on 28 Jun 1945.

771. Joseph Monroe Dennis (Elisha Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2, 3, 4 in 1852 in Wake Co., North Carolina. He died in 1902 in Wake Co., North Carolina. He was buried in Collins Grove Baptist Cemetery, Wake Co., North Carolina.

We do not find Joseph and Ida on the 1900 Census. However, it should be noted that there is a James M. Dennis (b. Sept. 1850) and wife Ida (b. Oct. 1853) living in Wake Co. who have been married for 26 years. The dates would seem to fit our Joseph Monroe Dennis. They have had 11 children with 7 living. If the 1900 Census is correct, we should find Ida married to James on the 1880 Census but there is no James married to an Ida on th 1880 Census which seems to indicate the name may be wrong on the 1900 Census. Furthermore, the James and Ida on the 1900 Census are found very close of a known son, Walter Dennis. The children found in the home of James (?Joseph) and Ida on the 1900 census are: Vera, b. 1879; Mamie P. b. 1882; Amos C. b. 1884 and Annie J. b. 1887. We hope that a family member may recognize one of the names and contact us.

Joseph married Ida B. Royster in 1874 in North Carolina. Ida was born 1, 2 in Oct 1853 in North Carolina. She died in 1930 in Wake Co., North Carolina. She was buried in Collins Grove Baptist Cemetery, Wake Co., North Carolina.

The 1900 Census reflects that Ida has had 11 children with 7 living. The 4 younger children remain in the home.

The tombstone inscription as transcribed is different from the 1900 Census.

They had the following children:

2868 F i Alma Dennis was born on 22 Feb 1876. She died on 5 Aug 1961.
2869 M ii Walter Madison Dennis was born on 3 Sep 1877. He died on 17 Nov 1961.
2870 F iii Mattie Dennis was born 1 in 1878 in Wake Co., North Carolina.
2871 F iv Vera Dennis was born 1 in Jun 1879 in Wake Co., North Carolina.
2872 F v Mamie P. Dennis was born 1 in Oct 1882 in Wake Co., North Carolina.
2873 M vi Amos C. Dennis was born 1 in Dec 1884 in Wake Co., North Carolina.

In 1910 he was still single, living in Hickory, North Carolina where he was working as a bookkeeper with a tobacco company.
2874 F vii Annie J. Dennis was born 1 in Feb 1887 in Wake Co., North Carolina.

772. Ellendar Stuart (Stewart) (Luranna (Susanna) Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2, 3, 4 in Jan 1828 in Chatham Co., North Carolina.

The 1900 Census shows she is now a widow. It shows she has had 5 children with 2 living which seems to conflict with the 1860 Census showing she already has 3 children. Living with her is a daughter, Louanna who indicates she was born in May of 1860. This clearly disagrees with the 1880 Census and also the information given by Orin Rollins who is living next door.

The 1880 Census which shows her age as 48 differs from the 1850 Census.

Ellendar married Richard Rollins son of James Rollins and Susan Dennis. Richard was born 1, 2, 3, 4 in 1825 in North Carolina. He died before 1900.

The 1870 Census of Harnett Co., North Carolina reflects the 3 youngest children have already died. The only children in the home are Orin, Mary and John.

They had the following children:

2875 M i Marion Rollins was born 1 in 1853 in North Carolina. He died before 1870 in Harnett Co., North Carolina.
2876 F ii Louanna A. Rollins was born 1 in 1858 in North Carolina.
2877 M iii Aison Rollins was born 1 in 1859 in Harnett Co., North Carolina. He died before 1870 in Harnett Co., North Carolina.
2878 M iv Orin E. Rollins was born in Dec 1860. He died on 3 Jun 1907.
2879 F v Mary E. Rollins was born 1, 2, 3 about 1866 in Buckhorn Township, Harnett Co., North Carolina. She died before 1900.
2880 M vi John W. Rollins was born 1, 2, 3 about 1869 in Buckhorn Township, Harnett Co., North Carolina. He died before 1900.

774. John A. Stuart (Stewart) (Luranna (Susanna) Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1 about 1839 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. He died before 1870.

We have not yet found John on the 1860 Census but apparently either he or his wife were still alive since their daughter, then age 2, is not with her grandparents.

John married Unknown before 1860.

They had the following children:

2881 F i Louana J Stuart (Stewart) was born 1 in 1858 in Chatham Co., North Carolina.

We have not found her with her parents on the 1860 Census. She was living with her grandparents in 1870 and with her grandfather in 1880. The 1870 Census gives her age as 10 but the 1880 census gives her age as 22.

775. Mary Isabella (Bell) Stewart (Luranna (Susanna) Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2, 3, 4 on 13 Jan 1846 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. She died on 23 Jul 1917 in New Hill, Wake Co., North Carolina. She was buried in Collins Grove Baptist Cemetery, Wake Co., North Carolina.

Mary married (1) William(s) Boothe son of Ransom Boothe and Rebecca Woodward on 12 Jan 1862 in Wake Co., North Carolina. William(s) was born 1, 2 on 5 Apr 1819 in North Carolina. He died 3 on 12 Jun 1872 in Wake Co., North Carolina. He was buried 4 in Collins Grove Baptist Cemetery, Wake Co., North Carolina.

In 1850 William is shown as head of household, living with his modern and siblings.

According to Mary Belle Greene, William and Bell were originally buried on the homeplace on land now occupied by the Shearin Harris Nuclear Plant and Harris Lake reservoir. The bodies and tombstones were moved to the Collins Grove Cemetery in the 1960s before constructions began.

They had the following children:

2882 M i John Robert Boothe was born on 28 Jan 1863. He died on 3 May 1930.
2883 M ii Thomas William Boothe was born on 12 Feb 1865. He died on 11 Oct 1936.
2884 F iii Julia (July) Ann Boothe was born on 25 May 1867.
2885 M iv James Henry Boothe was born on 18 Sep 1869. He died on 4 May 1940.

Mary married (2) Enoch A. Holt son of Richard Holt and Gilly on 1 Aug 1880 in Wake Co., North Carolina. Enoch was born 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in Dec 1834 in Chatham Co., North Carolina.

On the 1850 Census of Wake Co., North Carolina, Enoch is found with his family living 2 houses from Elisha Dennis who was the uncle of Malinda Stewart.

In 1870 Enoch Holt and his wife were living in Chatham Co. near her parents. There were no children in the home.

Enoch Holt married his sister-in-law after the death of Malinda. We do not know when Malinda died or when they were married but we do know that Williams Boothe, husband of Mary Isabella, died in 1872. In 1880 Mary is head of household and a widow. Enoch Holt is living alone and shown as a widow also. Although the 1900 census shows the couple have been married for 35 years, this is obviously impossible. Enoch married Malinda in 1865.

The 1910 Census appears to be closer to correct since it shows the couple have been married for 30 years. Mary shows she has had 4 children, all living. These are the Booth children from her first marriage.

He is shown as age 14 on the 1850 census.

776. Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Judd (Malinda Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2 in 1834 in North Carolina. She died before 1900 in Wake Co., North Carolina.

Elizabeth married 1 Orin (Orren) Bright son of Richard Bright and Margaret Hollomore on 13 Jan 1853 in Wake Co., North Carolina. Orin was born 2, 3, 4 in Aug 1830 in North Carolina.

In 1900 he is a widow living next to his 2 married sons.

They had the following children:

2886 M i Cornelius Judson Bright was born in 1854. He died before 1930.
2887 M ii William Cary Bright was born 1, 2, 3 in 1855 in Wake Co., North Carolina.

In 1880, he is found living next door to his brother. He is also single and his occupation is shown as "clerk in store". He was probably working with his brother. There is a Nancy Bright, age 20, living in the home and keeping house. There is no relationship indicated but she is shown as his wife on the 1900 Census. The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 20 years. They have had 2 children, both living, but only William is in the home at the time of the census.

The 1910 Census shows the couple have had 2 children, both living, but they are no longer in the home.
William married Nancy in 1880. Nancy was born in Dec 1859 in North Carolina.
2888 F iii Malinda Adelaide Bright was born 1, 2 in Jun 1850 in North Carolina.

She apparently did not marry since she is still single in 1900.
2889 F iv Emma Madore Bright was born in 1865.
  2890 F v Melissa Bright was born 1, 2, 3 in Oct 1867 in North Carolina.

In 1900 the Census shows she is married but her husband is not in the home. The 1900 Census shows she has had no children.
        Melissa married Wilson.

778. Nancy W. Judd (Malinda Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2, 3 in 1837 in North Carolina. She died 4 before 1898.

Gaston is living with his new wife, Eliza, in 1900.

Nancy married 1 D. Gaston Ballentine son of William Ballentine and Cynthia Crawley on 3 Jan 1856 in Wake Co., North Carolina. D. Gaston Ballentine was born 2, 3, 4 in Aug 1832 in North Carolina.

They had the following children:

  2891 M i Julius A. Ballentine was born 1, 2 in Feb 1858 in North Carolina.

At the time of the 1880 Census his occupation was given as "School Teacher". In 1900 he is found in Moore Co. where his occupation is shown as Dentist.

The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 6 years. They have had no children.
Julius married Minnie B. about 1894. Minnie was born in Jun 1863 in North Carolina.
2892 F ii Laura F. Ballentine was born 1, 2 in 1862 in North Carolina.
2893 F iii Lula F. Ballentine was born 1, 2 in 1866 in North Carolina.

779. William Jefferson Judd (Malinda Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2, 3 in 1839 in North Carolina.

William married 1 Martha Augusta Solomon daughter of Jeremiah Solomon and Elizabeth Bridges on 19 Feb 1868 in Franklin Co., North Carolina. Martha was born 2, 3 about 1843 in North Carolina.

They had the following children:

2894 F i Mary E. Judd was born 1 in 1871 in Franklin Co., North Carolina.
2895 F ii Augustus L. Judd was born 1 in 1874 in Franklin Co., North Carolina.

2897 M iv Claude Dennis Judd was born in 1878. He died on 16 Feb 1945.
2898 F v Lillian B. Judd was born about 1885.

780. Henderson Dennis Judd (Malinda Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2 in 1841 in North Carolina.

In 1900, we find a Henderson Judd, b. 1846, as a hospital patient in Morganton, North Carolina. The Census shows he is a widow.

Henderson married Cornelia Hinesley. Cornelia was born 1 in 1855 in North Carolina.

They had the following children:

  2899 F i Eugenia M. Judd was born 1 in 1870 in North Carolina.
2900 F ii Vidalia F. Judd was born 1 in 1872 in North Carolina.
2901 F iii Naomi Judd was born 1 in 1874 in North Carolina.
2902 F iv Malinda Judd was born 1 in 1876 in North Carolina.
2903 F v Cornelia Judd was born 1, 2 in Jul 1878 in North Carolina.

In 1900 she is found living in the home of her uncle, Orren Bright in Wake Co. Her occupation on the 1900 Census is given as "School Teacher".

781. John Thomas Judd (Malinda Dennis , Anna Pegram , William , John , William , George ) was born 1, 2, 3, 4 in Feb 1843 in North Carolina. He died in 1913. He was buried in Judd Family Cemetery.

The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 33 years. They have had 11 children with 9 living.

The directions given by R. M. Butler for the cemetery are:

JUDD FAMILY CEMETERY – SW WAKE COUNTY HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. From Holly Springs, traveling south on Main Street (NC 55), turn right onto Avent Ferry Road (SR 1115). Proceed 5.5 miles to Hollemans Crossroads. From there, go straight across onto Bartley Holleman Road (SR 1130). This is an unpaved road. Go 1.1 miles. The Judd Family Cemetery is off to the left side of Bartley Holleman Road about 100 yards from the road. After leaving the road, bear slightly right. It is on a knoll behind a grove of pine trees. The cemetery is enclosed by a fence made of galvanized pipe.

John married 1 Frances Louisa Cross on 12 Nov 1866 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. Frances was born 2, 3, 4 on 22 Sep 1840 in North Carolina. She died on 22 Mar 1915 in Wake Co., North Carolina. She was buried in Judd Family Cemetery.

Avent was probably her name from a previous marriage. The 1880 Census shows a daughter, Mary Avent, living in the home.

According to R. M. Butler who surveyed this cemetery, there were only three graves, i.e. John Thomas Judd and wife Frances and an infant child.

They had the following children:

2904 F i Sarah Laura Judd was born on 5 Sep 1867. She died on 30 May 1938.
  2905 F ii Lenna Williams Judd was born 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in Apr 1869 in North Carolina.

2909 M vi Zebulon Vance Judd was born 1, 2, 3 in Nov 1876 in North Carolina.

In 1900 he is still single and living at home. According to the Census he is still in school. If this is correct, it is possible he is in graduate school. It may be relevant that we find 2 Judds in Moore Co., both dentists, who may be brothers to Zebulon Judd.

In 1930 he was living in Auburn, Lee Co., Alabama where he was employed as a Professor (Dean) of a University.
Zebulon married Edith Royster daughter of William Burt Royster and Julia E. Tutt about 1920. Edith was born 1 in 1875 in South Carolina.
2910 M vii Dr. Eugene C. Judd was born 1, 2 in Apr 1882 in Wake Co., North Carolina.

Later on removal was made to Hartford, Connecticut, and thence to North Carolina, various branches of the family living in Wake County. The genealogical record of the Judds appears in First Families of America. the doctor's father, John Thomas J., who was born in 1843 and died in 1913, was a son of John William and Melinda (Dennis) all of Wake County. He enlisted for service in the last year of the Civil War and he spent his youthful days on the farm in Wake County on which he was born. He was active in township affairs, was an ardent Democrat and was a candidate for the Legislature in 1898. The last named spent his youthful days on his father's farm and attended the Cary high school. He taught school for two years, spending one year in the public schools of Wake County and one year in the Buckhorn school of Chatham County. He next became a student in the University of North Carolina, which he attended from 1904 until 1907, and by working on farms in the summer months he largely met the expenses of his college course. he studied medicine at the University of North Carolina from 1907 until 1909. He has taken special postgraduate work in surgery and since 1919 has engaged in general surgical practice in the capital city. For more than 20 years he has served gratuitously as general surgeon to the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh and during the entire period there has not been a single fatality among all the orphanage children.

On the 26th of October, 1920, Dr. Judge married Mary Elleanor Pritchard, of Chapel Hill, who was graduated from Elon College with the Bachelor of Arts degree and from the University of North Carolina with the Master of Arts degree. She belongs to the Women's Club, the Medical Auxiliary of Wake County and the American Legion Auxiliary, and for years has been a teacher in the North Carolina School for the Blind at Raleigh.
