In 1850, Samuel and his 1st wife, Ann are found living with his father-in-law, James Ezell. Their children shown on the 1850 census are Zachariah age 1 and Neil age 4 mo. Other souces have given Samuel's birth date as 1821 but on the 1850 census she is shown as age 27 indicating his birth date might be 1823.

On the 1850 census of Warren Co., North Carolina, John W. Riggan is still living with his aunt, Lucretia Harris. Just 2 houses away we find a Sarah Vaughan, age 20, living in the home of Sarah Vaughan, age 55. Apparently her father died before 1850. It is only an assumption that this is the Sarah Burrell Vaughan that he married the next year.

She died on the day that her youngest daughter, Sarah Burwell Riggan, was born.
