MUSTERROLL --JOHNSON'S ARTILLERY, CSA
Note by Ivan Butterworth, Chairman, Dinwiddie County Civil War Commission

Direct quote:

This military outfit of the Confederacy was commanded for practically the entire war by Capt B. J. Epes and was known as Johnson's Artillary, being named in honor of Gen. Jos.E. Johnson, CSA. It was an unassigned company of Virginia volunteers and most of their number were listed in some records seen as being recruited by Capt. Epes at Dinwiddie Courthouse and others joined in Petersburg. Capt. Epes evidently joined the Confederate forces in May 1861 but it seemed that this organization was organized on September 2 1861 at Dnwiddie and the Captain took command on that day, too. Information about the Muster Roll was found in the Virginia Archives, Vol. 18, p 305 as well as ot her rolls and information being available in records located in W.D.C 89, I also found in the archives

Capt. Epes was a native of Nottoway County who had come to Virginia before the Civil War to practice law and lived the rest of his life at Dinwiddie Courthouse and at his home "Gatewood" a few miles from the village . His law office was in the section now joining the Courthouse building that is occupied by Judge B. Hunter Barrow. For many years he lived the life of a bachelor and lived in the upper part of this wing, as well. He bought "Gatewood" in March 1905 in two Trustee sales one of which was from William Hodges Mann who was later to become Governor of Virginia

Capt. Epes was better known in Dinwiddie as Judge Epes where he was quite prominent as a citizen, lawyer, and office holder. He held the office of Commonwealth's Attorney and Judge as well as serving as Dinwiddie's representative to the 1901-2 Consititutional Convention in Richmond . He married a local Dinwiddie belle from a prominent family, Miss Lula Doyle, one of the author's early teachers. Her father, W. F. Doyle, had served under Capt. Epes in Johnston's Artillery. The only surviving child of this marriage is Mrs Pattie Epes Watson who now lives with her son, Mr. Meredith Watson in Petersburg.

Capt Epes attended Hampden-Sydney College and was a member of the University of Virginia's Law Class of 1852. He was one of the Charter members of the prominent social fraternity chapter at the University , Delta Kappa Epsilon, better known as the DKE's. His was a distinguished record of service in the Confederate Army where he was a most capable officer. His daughter Mrs. Watson was able to give some interesting information in addition to what the author found about Johnston's Artillery and other events to be related. It was stationed practically the entire war at Drewry's Bluff in Chesterfield County were it was used to protect the James River and the possible passage of the Union gunboats trying to reach Richmond. In Archive Records, it stated that its Station was Bary Dantzler in December 1864. Mrs. Watson stated that her father resigned from the service in February 1865 just before the War ended due to his health that had been greatly impaired due to malaria or as Capt Epes called it the ague from the long service rendered along the swamp banks and area of the James River that undermined his health with chills and the like. Mrs. Watson said that her father had recovered and was on his way to rejoin Gen. Johnston's forces in North Carolina when he learned of Lee's surrender carrying with him $40,000 worth of Confederate money in a satchel on horseback. His old outfit had been in the disasterous battle at Sailor's Creek where Judge Boisseau, a prominent Dinwiddian who had represented the County in the Secession Convention, was captured. Many of Johnston's Artillery surrendered at Appomattox.
