Louis Spencer Epes (1882-1935)
Louis was baptised in the Presbyterian Church by Dr. Robert B. White. His early education was at Hoge Military Academy in Blackstone. There he was 3rd Lt. of the cadet corps in 1898 and also received the prize for highest Latin grades. He entered Hampden-Sidney College, joined Sigma Chi fraternity by Sept. of 1899, graduated in 1900 and continued there until 1902 taking post-graduate courses, serving as business manager of the Hampden-Sidney Magazine and receiving MA degree. He enrolled at Washington and Lee College in 1906 and received Bachelor of Law degree in 1908 from W&L.
In 1908 Louis became a member of the Epes and Epes law firm in Blackstone and he resided in Blackstone thereafter. He was serving as Mayor of Blackstone in 1918, when he resigned to enter the army as private during WWI. While he was training at the artillery school at Camp Zachary Taylor, KY, the armistice was signied. In 1919 he was elected to the Virginia State Senate where he represented the 9th district until 1925 when he was appointed to the State Corporation Commission. In 1929 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia by Governor Byrd. Here he established his reputation for industry, intelligence and a high sense of justice seldom displayed in public life. Later he was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia and held that position until his death. He was a man of exceptional character and ability, credited with establishing the "Pay As You Go" philosophy of state finance which was adopted by Governor Byrd and remains the cornerstone of Virginia financial policy.
