Martha married William Embry Goode in 1814. William died in 1825.

They had the following children:

Benjamin married Catherine Ann Stith on 13 Dec 1815 in Greenville Co., Virginia. Catherine was born on 15 Jun 1796 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. She died on 3 Mar 1854 in Carrollton, Greene Co., Illinois.

134. William Baker Pegram 1 (Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born on 22 Jan 1797 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. He died 2 in 1877.

William Baker attended school in a log cabin near his home, until sixteen years of age. He was apprenticed to the Wholesale House of Charles Kent of Petersburg, Virginia, but after about two years he went to sea. He was cabin boy on "The John Brown", and then Chief Mate. After a few years, with capital furnished by his father, he formed a business partnership with Wilkins Andrews, who married his sister, Susan Manson Pegram. Ill health again forced him to go to sea. He became Captain of a vessel, and was left at Port-au-Prince, Haiti with yellow fever. Nursed back to health by an old negro woman, he returned home, and promised not to go to sea again.

William married Sarah Elizabeth Mary Jones Walker daughter of Col. Alexander Walker and Sarah on 7 Sep 1821 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Sarah was born 1 about 1797 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. She died after 1880.

In 1880 she is found living with her son, Benjamin.

In 1870 she was living in Morgan Co. where she was teaching in what appears to be a boarding school.

135. Nathaniel James Pegram 1, 2 (Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born in Feb 1804 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. He died on 31 May 1866 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana.

In 1825 he was a deputy sheriff in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia.when we find: "1825/3/19 Elijah had muster fines taken from him by Nathaniel J. Pegram, deputy sheriff of Dinwiddie Co."

Nathaniel married Mary Malvinia Bryan daughter of Henry Hunter Bryan and Elizabeth Averett on 22 Dec 1835. Mary was born on 10 Feb 1810 in Oakville, Tennessee. She died on 22 Dec 1865 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Batte papers give her name as Susan Pegram Manson.

Susannah married 1 (1) Benjamin Ingram on 10 Dec 1802 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Benjamin was born on 7 Apr 1782 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. He died about 1803 in Brunswick Co., Virginia.

Susannah married 1 (2) Abraham Buford son of William Buford and Mary Ragsdale on 27 Dec 1805 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Abraham was born 2, 3 on 25 Nov 1782 in Nottoway Parish, Amelia Co., Virginia. He died 4, 5 in Oct 1852 in Marengo Co., Alabama.

He is found on the 1850 Census of Marengo Co., Alabama. He is living alone except for an overseer.

They had the following children:

In the 1850 Census he is found living alone in Petersburg, age 35, and his occupation is listed as clerk.

138. Mary Baker Manson (Ann (Nancy) Baker Pegram , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born about 1785 in Brunswick Co., Virginia.

Mary married 3 Edward Jones Tarpley 1, 2 son of William Tarpley and Winifred Jones on 4 Aug 1800 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Edward was born in 1779 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. He died before 1850 in Wilkinson Co., Georgia.

He was a Captain in War of 1812 and in an Indian War.

They had the following children:

  559 M ii Thomas M. Tarpley was born before 1810. He died before Nov 1847 in Wilkinson Co., Georgia.

The following notes on Thomas M. Tarpley are from Ann Tolar, a descendant of Edward Jones Tarpley who has kindly shared her research.

Presumed son of Edward Jones and Mary Baker Manson Tarpley based on correlation of ages of family members in 1810 and 1840 census records. Also the fact that Mary Manson Tarpley's father was named Thomas, and that Geroge W. Tarpley, known son of Edward Jones and Mary Manson Tarpley, was administrator of the will of Thomas M. Tarpley at his death in 1847.

561 M iv Edward Jones Tarpley was born in 1816. He died in 1864.
  562 M v Wingfield Tarpley was born 1 about 1819 in Wilkinson Co., Georgia.

In 1850 he was still living with his mother. He was probably retarted or mentally impaired and on September 20, 1854 he was admitted to the state insane asylum in Milledgeville, Georgia.
  563 M vi Edwin Tarpley 1 was born 2 about 1823. He died in 1850 in Wilkinson Co., Georgia.

His Will was probated 9/9/1850 and recorded in Will Book A, Wilkinson Co., Georgia. In it he names brothers: George M. Tarpley, William Tarpley, George W. Tarpley, Edward J. Tarpley and Wingfield Tarpley and his mother who is not named. The 1850 Mortality Census for Wilkinson Co., Georgia shows he was age 38 at the time of his death in February of 1850.

Martha married 1 Thomas Buford on 22 Nov 1808 in Cumberland Parish, Nottaway Co., Virginia. Thomas was born 2 on 18 Sep 1786 in Lunenburg Co., Virginia. He died 3 on 10 Sep 1820 in Lunenburg Co., Virginia.

140. Agnes Thweat Manson (Ann (Nancy) Baker Pegram , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 1 on 9 Dec 1793 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. She died 2 on 17 Dec 1861. Agnes was born 3 on 9 Dec 1798.

Agnes married 1 Col. Isham Trotter son of George Trotter and Catey Crooks (Crooke) on 19 Dec 1816. Isham was born 2 on 1 Jan 1792. He died 3, 4 on 30 Oct 1856 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Isham was born 5 on 1 Jan 1792 in Brunswick Co., Virginia.

Will of Isham Trotter:

In the name of God: I, Isham Trotter of the County of Brunswick, do make this my last will and Testament, being in perfect mind and memory. i direct my debts to be paid first. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife the tract of land on which I at present reside, together with the tract on which my son, Wm. A. Trotter, now resides, supposed to contain in all about eleven hundred acres, also my interest in the mill and land attached thereto owned by Col. Mason and myself, all my household and kitchen furniture, plantation tools, one choice wagon, tow ox carts, one horse cart my new riding carriage, harness and horses, four choice mules, fifteen choice cattle including two yoke of oxen, all the stock of hogs and sheep on the home plantation, all the crop of every description, either housed or growing on the farm, and the following named slaves, Billy, Oliver, Big Edmund, little Edmund, Ephriam, Emanuel and his tools, Andrew, Anna, and her five children, namely, Anderson, Dick, Scott, Sam and Isham, Rhoda and her child Mary, Creasy and her two youngest children, namely, Washington and Robert Clary, Ann, Lizzy and her two children, namely, Clar and Charlotte, during her life. I also give my beloved wife one thousand dollars in money, in fee simple to paid out of my estate. I give and bequeath to my daughter, Mary Ann Harrison, the property which I have therefore given her, also the five hundred and fifty dollars already advanced her to make her portion equal.

I give to my granddaughter, Martha T. Bagley, one thousand dollars to paid out of estate, it is my wish that she shall have the slaves which I gave to her mother, if it meets the wishes of her father, Edward G. Bagley.

I give to my two sons, Wm. A. Trotter and Isham E. Trotter, in trust for the benefit of my daughter, Susan I. A. Orgain, during her natural life, and at her death to her children, my tract of land lying on Sturgeon Creek, containing by estimation fourteen hundred and ninety-five acres, also all the property which I have loaned to my said daughter by two deeds duly recorded in Brunswick County Court 1st January 1
846 and 1st January 1856, except the tract of land mentioned therein---also all the stock of every description, including horses, cattle, hogs and sheep, all the plantation tools, household and kitchen furniture now in their possession---also the carriage and harness in her possession, the above property given in trust to my daughter Susan not to be subject to the debts or contracts of her Husband, under any circumstances whatsoever.

I give to my daughter Juliana P. Bagley, the property which I have heretofore given her forever.

I give to my son, Wm. A. Trotter, one half of the tract of land which I purchased from C. F. Maupin, lying in the county of Greenville, supposed to contain twelve hundred and fifty acres and the following named slaves, John, Milton, Ann and five children, namely, Adolphus, Julia, Ned, John and Hannah, and all the stock of horses, cattle hogs and sheep, household and kitchen furniture, plantation tools now in his possession.

I give to my daughter Amelia M. Trotter, slaves, Mary, Henry, Merritt, Harrier, Joe and Catherine and one hundred dollars in money to purchase a bed.

I give to my son, Isham E. Trotter, the other half of the tract of land, which I have lately purchased from C. F. Maupin, and slaves Hall, Martha, Nick, Julia and her child, Ned, also one thousand dollars in Money to purchase stock & to make him equal with my other son.
I give to my daughter, Lucy E. Trotter, the following slaves, Jane, William Thadeus, Silvy and her child, Delphy, and I direct that her expenses at school, for the next year shall be paid out of my estate.

After the death of my wife, I direct that all my land and mill give her for life, be sold, and the land on which John A. Orgain and his wife now reside, be sold also, and the proceeds divided equally between my daughters, Mary Ann, Henrietta T. , Julianna P., Amelia M. and Lucy E. Trotter.

I direct that one acre of land be reserved as a graveyard, which is now the burying ground, where I reside, for the use of my family, and that such shall not be sold and that free access be reserved in the sale of the land for all purposes necessary thereto.

I mean the land on which John A. Orgain now resides to be sold at my death. I mean the proceeds of the sale of the land and mill loaned my wife and the Orgain land, all be divided as above among my daughters, mentioned.

I will and desire that all my slaves not herein disposed of at my death be equally divided between my children. Mary Ann, Susan I. A., Julian P., Henrietta T. Amelia M, Lucy E., Wm. A and Isham E., but the share of my daughter I. A. is to be held by my sons, Wm. A and Isham E., Trotter in trust heretofore stated. I direct and wish that in the division of slaves that man and wife may not be parted, if it can be avoided.

I direct that at my death that all my goods in the store may be sold on a credit of six months, and that all the debts that may be due the store, as well as all debts which may be due in other ways, and all the money in my hand, shall be collected as soon as convenient, which with the money arising from the sale of the crop at the quarter plantation and such stock & as I have directed to be sold, shall constitute a fund, out of which all legacies in money devised herein shall be paid; if there be more than enough, the balance to be divided equally between all my children, but the portion coming to my daughter, Susan I. A. to be held in trust by my sons as theretofore directed. If either of my children should die before they become of age or marry, I wish the property given them in the Will shall be equally divided between the remaining children, but if my daughter I. A. should get any property by the death of any of her brothers or sisters, it is to be held in trust as heretofore mentioned. I direct that any property not dispose of shall be divided among my children, but Susan I. A. Orgain's to be held intrust as heretofore mentioned.

I appoint Isham H. Trotter, my agent to wind up all my mercantile affairs, for which services I allow him six per cent commissions.

I appoint Thomas H. Meredith and Edward G. Bagley my executors and request that no security be required of them by court.

This Codicil made this the 9th day of October 1856, to be added and made a part of my will bearing the date of the 5th of September 1856, my wish and desire is that the following alterations be made in the said will. The tract of land given to my two sons William A. and Isham E, Trotter in trust for the benefit of my daughter, Susan I. Orgain during her natural life and at her death to her children, lying on Sturgeon Creek containing by estimation fourteen hundred and ninety-five acres. My desire is that my two sons, Wm. and Isham E. Trotter shall hold in trust the tract of land that John A. Orgain and Susan I, his wife now resides on during her life and at her death to her children, lying on the plank road and containing by estimation five hundred acres, in the place of the Strugeon tract of land. I mean that the tract of land that is at present occupied by John A. Orgain and Susan I., his wife shall be put under the same restriction and in the same situation in every respect as the Sturgeon tract was by my will of the 5th day of September last.

Viz: that the Sturgeon tract of land all except the small piece of woodland lying on the east side of the road leading to Brunswick Court house which I loan to my wife during her life and at her death to be disposed of as all the rest of the land given her during her life, and the proceeds divided as the rest of the land given her for her life estate. Viz equally between my daughters Mary A., Julia P., Henrietta T., Amelia M. and Lucy E. Trotter, the sale to be made by my executors. My will is that there shall be no appraisement of my estate. Witness this hand and seal this the 9th day of October 1856

141. Edward Manson (Ann (Nancy) Baker Pegram , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 1 about 1795. He died in 1821/1886.

Edward married 1 Nancy W. MacLin on 13 Dec 1815. Nancy was born 2 on 11 Jul 1797. She died in 1821/1891.

They had the following children:

        Lucy married 1 Benjamin Orgain on 24 Nov 1834 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Benjamin was born in 1782/1814. He died 2 in 1839/1901 in Tennessee.
  580 F ii Mary E. Manson was born 1 in 1815/1842. She died in 1821/1925.

142. Thomas James Manson (Ann (Nancy) Baker Pegram , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born about 1804 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. He died 1 on 15 Feb 1844 in Brunswick Co., Virginia.

Thomas married 1 Susan James MacLin daughter of Joseph Maclin and Elizabeth Pritchett on 17 May 1826 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Susan was born 2, 3 on 17 Oct 1806 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. She died 4 on 24 Apr 1874 in Brunswick Co., Virginia.

Buried with Joseph Richard Manson, her son and his wife. Cemetery is behind the ruins of their home above route 616 and just west of its intersection with Route 606, in the Red Oak District, Brunswick County, Virginia. It is believed that her husband Thomas is also buried here as noted in a letter by her son to Lucy Manson Simpson, her great-granddaughter dated July 3, 1913 shortly after Charlotte Manson's death.

With Susan Manson at her death and for many years before was a mulatto servant known as Betsy Buckner whose birthdate, based on various census reports, was about 1804 and who lived on with J. R. Manson until her death in 1893. The Virginia Division of Vital Records cannot find any notice of Betsy's death.

Notes of Peggy Manson give Susan Manson's date of death as April 24, 1874 but death certificate says March 7, 1874. Since tombstone in family cemetery also says April 24, 1874 we will accept that date. Obituary notice in Petersburg Index & Express also notes date as April 24, 1874.

Edward married Dorothy Gilliam on 21 Dec 1807 in Surry Co., Virginia. Dorothy was born 1 about 1789 in Sussex Co., Virginia. She died 2 after 1860 in Tippah Co., Mississippi.
