(Continued)

144. Mary Pegram (Daniel , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 1 on 27 Feb 1789 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. She died on 20 Aug 1843 in North Carolina.

Mary married 1 Lemuel Moorman son of Charles Clark Moorman and Nancy Hancock on 10 Jun 1811 in Bedford Co., Virginia. Lemuel was born on 11 Jul 1788 in Bedford Co., Virginia. He died 2 on 13 Sep 1828 in Lincoln Co., North Carolina.

A notice of his death published in The Yadkin and Catawba Journal says that Lemuel Moorman, a native of Virginia, died in Linconton, N. C. on September 30, 1828.

They had the following children:

590 F i Nancy Henrietta Virginia Moorman was born in Jul 1815.
591 M ii Daniel B. P. Moorman was born about 1820.
592 F iii Cornelia Moorman was born about 1824. She died before Jan 1867.

145. Thomas Pegram 1, 2, 3 (Daniel , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born on 20 Apr 1791 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. He died in Aug 1818 in Bedford Co., Virginia.

His Will is recorded in Will Book "E", p. 46 Bedford Co., Virginia.

The following item appeared in "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri" by Wm. S. Bryan and Robert Rose, published in 1876:

The parents of Daniel Pegram were Scotch*. Daniel was born in Petersburg, Virginia, but settled and lived in Bedford Co., where he raised 10 children, six sons and 4 daughters, each of whom was more than six foot in height. Thomas, a son of Daniel Pegram, married Nancy Hopkins, whose mother's maiden name was Clark, and who had a brother, Chester Clark, who drew $100,000 in a lottery. Thomas had but three children... James L., Edward T., and William. The latter died in Virginia in his 19th year. James L. married Julia R. Oley, of Virginia, and settled in St. Charles Co., Missouri in 1839, and in Montgomery Co., in 1845. Mrs. Pegram died in 1863. They had 8 children, four sons and four daughters. Edward T. Pegram married Mildred Crane, of Montgomery Co., and had 2 children, a son and daughter.

* This we know to be incorrect.

Thomas married Nancy (Narcissa) Hopkins 1, 2 daughter of William Hopkins and Elizabeth Clarke in 1812. Nancy was born in Bedford Co., Virginia.

They had the following children:

593 M i James Lawrence Pegram was born in 1813. He died on 12 Dec 1893.
594 M ii William Daniel Pegram was born about 1815 in Bedford Co., Virginia. He died about 1834 in Virginia.
595 M iii Edward Thomas W. Pegram was born on 29 Mar 1818. He died on 30 Nov 1876.

147. Nancy Pegram (Daniel , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born on 31 Jan 1796 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia.

On the 1850 Census of York Co., South Carolina, she is listed as HH. Living with her are her son, George W. Mason and his wife and their son, Larkin. Nancy A. Pegram is also listed. She is probably the sister of Nancy Pegram but if so, her age is wrong since it shows her to be age 13 and born in Virginia. Julia A. Pegram, the sister of Nancy Pegram Mason was born in 1804.

Nancy married William Mason. William was born in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina. He died before 1850 in probably York Co., South Carolina.

They had the following children:

596 M i George Washington Mason was born about 1825.
597 F ii Susan Virginia Mason was born about 1827.

148. Winchester Pegram 1, 2 (Daniel , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born on 23 Jan 1799 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. He died on 28 Nov 1862 in Dallas, Gaston Co., North Carolina.

Winchester and Mary lived near the mouth of the South Fork River in Lincoln County, which is now known as the South Point Section of Gaston County, having been cut off from Lincoln County in 1846. This area was also the general locale of Daniel Pegram, Winchester's father.

About 1850 Winchester and Mary moved to Dallas, just north of Gastonia. Winchester was a merchant there, and also kept a hotel. The Gastonia, North Carolina Daily Gazette of 28 September 1945 carried an article entitled "Old Pegram Home, First built in Dallas, Being Tom Down by Workmen." It was a large two story house with an ell, and chimney at either end. It was on the southwest comer of the square. It was built by Col. Morris, almost all of heart pine. It was a stately building and stood for ninety five years before being torn down to be replaced by an oil station. The home is described in a book on Old Gaston County Homes. Miss Corinne Puett, a descendant of Winchester and Mary Stowe, wrote on page four of"Dallas Homes" that "Mr. Pegram was killed by a falling tree in 1861, and Mrs. Pegram continued to live there until her death in 1866. Mrs. Pegram had a pretty flower garden on the west side of her house, and today many of Grandma Pegram's flower descendants live on in the gardens of her children and grandchildren."A daughter, Mary Ward made her home with her mother, and continued to live there a long time after her mother died. Later the home was occupied by Sheriff Jim White, and Mrs. O.F. Mason and family. Mrs. Miles Rhyne bought the home, and later her son, Eugene Rhyne owned it, and lived there for many years. Dr. Simmons visited Miss Puett in the summer of 1982. She was in her nineties, in the poorest of health, and confined to the bed, but still interested and alert about family history. She has since died.

The Pegrams were charter members of the Presbyterian Church at Dallas, which was organized in 1851. Winchester was the first Ruling Elder. His descendants are still leaders in the Presbyterian Denomination. One of his grandsons, Robert Murry Pegram was a Presbyterian minister, and there were one or more other descendants that were ministers. Mrs. Frances Pegram Weaver and her two sisters, great granddaughters of Winchester and Mary Pegram were active in Presbyterian work, have held responsible appointments, and have been officially honored for their contributions.

The death of Winchester Pegram resulted when he tried to rescue a calf from underneath a falling tree. In the Annals of Lincoln County, page 173 it is stated: "Winchester Pegram was a leading citizen.., born June 23, 1799. He married in 1818 to Mary, daughter of Jacob Stowe, and died in Dallas November 28, 1862. He was a good man, a merchant, kept a hotel in Dallas and reared a family of splendid sons and daughters, among them were Miles P., longtime a Charlotte Banker, W.W., E.L. Theodore and Frank Pegram."

Both Winchester and his wife Mary are buried at the New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Gaston County, North Carolina.

The will of Winchester was executed in Gaston County, 5 August 1857 and recorded in Book 1, p. 134. It names his wife Mary, and daughters, Violet Susan Froneberger and Mary Ward. Daughters Nancy and Elvira died prior to the time Winchester's will was made. Sons named in the will were Miles P., Theodore, William, Edward L. and Franklin. It also named Rebecca and Violet Craig, daughter of his deceased daughter Nancy. The will of Mary Stowe Pegram was made 10 March 1866, Book 1, p. 193, and names the same heirs as Winchester.

Winchester and Mary had a large family and there are many descendants in North and South Carolina, especially the area around Charlotte and Gastonia, and in York County, South Carolina. All of Winchester and Mary's children were apparently born in Gaston or Lincoln Counties.

A copy of a portion of the Bible of Daniel Theodore Pegram, son of Winchester Pegram is posted elsewhere on this website.

Winchester married Mary Stowe 1 daughter of Jacob Stowe and Nancy Ford on 28 Dec 1818 in Lincoln Co., North Carolina. Mary was born on 4 Mar 1796 in Lincoln Co., North Carolina. She died on 5 Jul 1866 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina.

Mary is incorrectly shown as age 33 on the 1850 census of Gaston Co., North Carolina.

156. Thomas Rives (Thomas Henry Rives , Mary Pegram , Daniel , George ) was born about 1770 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. He died in 1842 in Hall Co., Georgia.

After the custom of the time, Thomas Rives had received land from his father before the latter's death. As early as 1810 the records show him as the owner of 10 slaves in Chatham county.

In 1811, following the death of his father, Thomas Rives removed with his family to Jones County, Georgia, and settled six miles from the Ocmulgee River which, at that time, was the dividing line between the Creek Indians and the whites. In 1817 he removed to Jackson County, Georgia, and settled three miles north of Jefferson; but remained there only a short while, finally making his home near Bark Camp in Hall County, Georgia. The date of his death is not known; his great-great-grandson, Col. Homer V. Johnson, Clerk of the Court of Hall county, having indicated that there is no record of his will or of the administration of his estate among the Hall county records.

Mary married Robert Wilkinson son of John Wilkinson and Margaret McGume before 1790 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. Robert was born in 1764 in Orange Co., North Carolina.

The following note (and all other notes on this Wilkinson line) was made by the unknown researcher who compiled this excellent account of his/her Wilkinson genealogy. If you recognize the author of this work, please let us hear from you so that we may give proper recognition for their excellent work.

"Robert Wilkinson, the first son of John and Margaret Wilkinson, was born in Chatham County, North Carolina in 1764. According to a book of Rives family history, Robert married Mary Rives. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Henry Rives and second wife Mary Edwards. She was born in 1768. Thomas was a son of William Rives and Miss Pegram, born in Prince George County, Virginia in about 1740. Thomas had moved to southern Virginia and lived in that area until about 1768. After the death of his first wife, Eleanor Neal, in 1868, he married Mary Edwards. He and family moved a few years later to Chatham County, North Carolina.

In the 1790 Census of Chatham County, Robert and Mary were known to have three daughters and two sons. I believe that one of the sons was Benjamin. By 1800 the family had added another daughter and son. The family remained in Chatham County for at least the next 20 years. It is believed that Mary was deceased by about 1818. In 1818, Robert appointed Thomas Snipes as his Power of Attorney to act for him for sums of money or property due him from the Last Will and Testament of Thomas Rives. The nature of the Power of Attorney indicated that Robert was considering leaving Chatham County. He is believed to have been living there until about 1823, after which there is no further record of him or any members of his family in North Carolina.

The birth of my known ancestor, Robert (1797), fits into the picture very nicely. As was the practice in many families of the time, the first born son was often named after the father. A review of other children born to Robert Sr.'s brothers and sisters reveals no other Robert as a child. While all of this is circumstantial, it is too good not to be true."

Robert and Mary had the following children:

  640 F i Daughter Wilkinson was born before 1790.
641 F ii Daughter Wilkinson was born before 1790.
642 F iii Daughter Wilkinson was born before 1790.
643 M iv Benjamin Wilkinson was born before 1790.
644 M v Robert Wilkinson was born in 1797. He died in 1857.
645 F vi Daughter Wilkinson was born before 1800.

159. Edwards Rives 1 (Thomas Henry Rives , Mary Pegram , Daniel , George ) was born 2 on 19 Mar 1775 in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. He died on 2 Feb 1840 in Chatham Co., North Carolina.

In 1850, his wife is living with her daughter and son-in-law, Aaron Headen and wife, Mary.

The notice of his death was published in The Raleigh Register.

Edwards married Mary Ann Alston 1, 2 daughter of William Alston and Ann Yeargain in 1800 in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. Mary was born on 9 Jun 1785 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. She died on 8 Sep 1867 in Chatham Co., North Carolina.

In 1860 she was living with her daughter, Mary Edwards Rives Headen.
