The following comments were made by a descendant of Robert Winkinson. If anyone recognizes the author of these comments, please let us know so we can give proper credit for this research.

" Robert was born in Chatham County, North Carolina in 1797. He is believed to be the last son born to Robert and Mary. The first was Benjamin. There were three daughters of which I have been unable to identify. The family lived in Chatham County until the early 1800's.

Sometime prior to 1820 there was a large movement of Wilkinsons, Ratcliffs, Rays, and other families related by marriage to the Athens County, Ohio area. The elder Richard (Robert's uncle) and Robert (1797) were among them. Prior to 1820, Robert met a young lady, Elizabeth Miller. She had been born in about 1805 in Virginia. They were married in 1820 in Athens County. Their first son, Noah, was born there the next year. On 1 January 1824, Robert purchased 80 acres of land in Section 3, Elk Township, in what is now part of Vinton County, Ohio. In 1825, son David was born.

About 1826, there was a general exodus of Wilkinsons from Ohio to the Indiana region. Richard and Robert were among them. The 1830 Indiana Census of Fountain County, shows Robert and Elizabeth to have 3 sons and 1 daughter. These would be Noah, David, Mary Ann and John. Robert and family moved north along the Wabash River to what is Laporte County, Indiana in late 1833. Later the next year, Robert with a brother, Benjamin, and two nephews set out to explore the northwest Indiana area which had just been opened for settlement. One of the nephews was probably Peter Thomas Wilkinson. Robert staked two claims. One on the Deep River in November 1834 and the other on West Creek in March 1835. He was the third settler to have claims in what is now Lake County.

On 4 July 1836, Robert and several other settlers in the area sent a letter to President Andrew Jackson asking for his intervention in a dispute over rightful ownership to the claims they had made in the Northwest Territory. According to the rights established under a "Squatters Union" constitution, the settlers had met the criteria for ownership. However, when the lands were made part of Indiana, it was determined that Congress had given the lands to the indians as part of a "Floating Indian Reservation". Evidently, President Jackson stepped in and solved the dispute. In 1837 two bridges were built . One across West Creek near Robert's claim and the other near Benjamin's. Robert remained on his land for a few years and then left.

The 1840 Lake County census lists Robert and family with 4 sons and 2 daughters. The youngest of these sons was Willard Wood Wilkinson and the new daughter was Sarah Jane. According to records, Robert was the first postmaster in West Creek Township. He held the post until the early 1850's. In 1836, Robert was also elected Probate Judge and Associate Judge. In 1848 he served as County Commissioner. Three more children were added to the family: twins, Cerena and Corsena and the last child, Elizabeth.

The 1850 census shows Robert, Elizabeth, Sarah, Willard, Cerena, Corsena, and Elizabeth as still residing at West Creek. Son John and wife Alvina lived on a farm adjacent to Robert. David M, second wife Eleanor, and son Peter Thomas were also living in Lake County. Sometime after 1850, Robert and most of his family moved to Lawrence County, Missouri. Daughters, Mary Ann and Sarah Jane, had married and remained in Indiana. Son, Noah, was there too and was part of a land development group. I believe that Noah had moved to Missouri first and that was probably the reason for Robert and family to move there. There were money problems with the development group and it folded. At the time of Robert and Elizabeth's death in 1857, all the children were there except for the Mary Ann and Sarah Jane. One of Sarah's children was born in Missouri in about 1857. She must have travelled there to visit. Probate records show there was little in assets. The sale of assets barely paid expenses.

Noah, David and most of the younger children returned to the Lake County area after the death of their parents. John and his family, along with Elizabeth, remained in Missouri until just after 1860. Elizabeth had been working as a servant. Later census records show that John and family returned to Lake County where John was a postal carrier. Alvina died and is buried there. John married again and remained in the area until his death.

I have visited Mount Vernon, Missouri, and have been unable to uncover any other information about Robert and Elizabeth. There were no cemetery records pertaining to their burial site."

Mary married Aaron Gaston Headen 1, 2 on 3 Dec 1844 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. Aaron was born 3 about 1822 in Chatham Co., North Carolina.

The 1850 Chatham County census lists Aaron Headen, age twenty seven, as a merchant at Beaumont, Hickory Mountain Township. The Chatham Invincibles formed in Headen's store on 11 March, 1862, he raising half a company and W. H. Jones, the other half, in the Cape Fear Township. Jones was elected as Captain and Aaron was chosen as First Lieutenant. Three weeks later they marched to Camp Mangum, near the present North Carolina State Fairgrounds. They became Company G, 48th North Carolina Regiment. The Company suffered high casualties. Forty seven men, out of the one hundred and forty three, were lost. A letter, in the possession of a granddaughter, Ola (Headen) Norris of Morehead City, was written by one of Aaron's daughters to her younger sister, when both were in their latter years. From it we find that Aaron's wife, Mary Edwards, like most of the women who had husbands at war, was left alone with the Negroes, her very young daughters, and her very old mother, Mary Ann (Alston) Rives. Mary Edwards sent a slave to the train depot once a week, probably at Bonlee, to retrieve any news of the war, and once he came home to tell her that Aaron's legs had been shot off. She remained "crazed beyond consolation", even after she found that it was not he who had suffered these horrible wounds. Aaron, at some later point, left the service to return to Mary Edwards, who from all indications was unable to cope without him.

After the War the family left the land behind and moved into Pittsboro where they lived in the historic St. Lawrence House. It had been so grand for it's time that the cost of building had bankrupted both St. Lawrence and his builder. "The Yellow House", which has been relocated, boasted a ballroom. It was actually the central hall which could be combined with the rooms on either side by sliding the walls up and onto the ceilings of the adjacent spaces. The house stood on the corner across from the Court House, near the building where Aaron and his son in law, Alvis Bynum, operated their merchantile business. As late as 1863 the St. Lawrence House was known as Mrs. Goldston's Inn. She was getting $7.00 a night. But since corn was selling for $50.00 a barrel and brandy for $40.00 a gallon, she probably wasn't out of line. According to the Architectural Heritage of Chatham County, the merchantile firm of Aaron Headen, Mark Bynum, Jr., and Luther Bynum, founder of the Bynum Manufacturing Company on old Luke Bynum's Haw River land, held joint ownership of the house, and that "in 1878 successful A. G. Headen expanded his business to include his son in law, Alvis J. Bynum". Alvis died in 1906, at age sixty four. It would appear that Headen, at some point, had bought the Yellow House outright, as in his own 1907 will, he was age 84, he left lifetime rights to the house to his second wife, Eudora. She also received lifetime rights to his "storehouse and lot known as the old Merritt Drug Store place". Aaron and his brother Andrew still owned about 500 acres in Hickory Mountain Township. Eudora received Aaron's portion outright, which as per her will, half went to the Alvis and Mary (Headen) Bynum, one quarter proceeds going to the Pittsboro Methodist Church, and the other quarter to the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh. The house was evidently sold with the proceeds divided among Aaron's children and a granddaughter, Mamie Ware Crews. It has been moved from it's original location, which was across from the Court House, to the end of South Street.

Aaron, a Justice of the Peace, as well as a merchant, married couples from through the county. From 8 May, 1866, until 7 February, 1867, he, Henry A. London, a wealthy Pittsboro merchant and son of Wilmington merchant John London, and O. S. Poe, comprised the Chatham County Finance Committee. The State expected $5,000 from Chatham County residents but the sheriff could only raise $3,000 as about 2,000 people had neglected to register their names with the Magistrate. They also noted that land values had dropped dramatically.
