His obituary in The Yadkin Valley News - Thursday, July 4, 1895 reads in part:
"D. N. Dalton, age 74 years, died at Dalton on Monday. The depot near his house was named for him. he was married twice; his first wife was from Chatham Co. Six children blessed this union, 4 boys and 2 girls. Onedaughter married DR. A. G. Jones of Walnut Cove; the other, DR. M. D. Phillips of Dalton. The sons were DR. D. N. Dalton, R. E. Dalton, R. I. Daton and Earnest Dalton of this city. The second wife was a Miss Westmoreland, and this union was blessed with 12 children ..."

"O.S. Poe has gone North to buy his Spring stock. He has just received a ___ (blurred) line of Milliners. His Hats are beautiful. His Ladies and Gents Hats are the prettiest ever brought to the market. "
In the Thursday, October 13, 1887 edition of the same paper, O.S. Stedman is listed as a County Commissioner of Chatham Co., North Carolina. The same paper carries another add for his merchantile store:
O.S. Poe - Largest Stock of Boots and Shoes....Stylish Millinery, Dress Goods.
Her must have had some problem collecting payment for a latter edition of the paper carries the notice: "If you are indebted to O.S. Poe, by mortgage or note, he respectfully asks you to come forward at once and settle, or you might be put to some inconvenience."

The 1900 Census of Chatham Co., North Carolina lists Isaac's occupation as "Justice of Peace". It shows that he and Margaret have been married for 40 years and have had 9 children. The no. living is not legible. Two of their sons (Willie and Paul) are still at home as well as two daughters-in-law and 4 grandchildren. Unfortunately, we can not determine if the daughter-in-law are the spouses of the sons or which grandchildren belong to whom. However, for the record, the grandchildren are shown as: Maggie F. b. Feb. 1895; Anna b. Sept. 1897; Gibbons (female) b. Jan. 1900; and Alline b. Apr. 1900.

There is an Elmore Smith found in Stokes Co. and his wife if named Marie. They have been married for 5 years with 2 children. We have not yet confirmed that this is our Marie Palmer.
