When she was about one year old, the family moved back to Oakdale, Nebraska, where her father worked the farm of Grandpa Wilkinson. Alice's younger brother, Ralph, and sister, Sarah, were born during this time. In the spring of 1902, Thomas moved the family to North Dakota by train. Thomas and his three brothers, Robert, Adelbert and Charles, had taken up homesteads in Burleigh County. The families lived in close proximity of each other and the kids enjoyed growing up together. All went to the Wilkinson School. Their first homes were made of sod which were nice, cozy and warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The family operated the Post Office, called Phoenix, and also had a small grocery store. Mail was delivered by horse and buggy twice a week. When Alice was 16, the family moved to Wing, North Dakota, where they operated a larger grocery store. In the fall of 1916, the family moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where they lived all their lives. In 1935, Alice married Arthur Medicott. Arthur worked for 27 years for the Fargo Water Works. Alice loved to plant her garden and particularly enjoyed lots of flowers. |
