540. Mary Catherine Andrews 1 (Mary Peter Pegram , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born on 29 Jan 1823 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. She died in Nov 1856 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., Missouri.

Mary married 2 George Pegram 1 son of John Coleman Pegram and Caroline Pegram on 5 Dec 1840 in Greene Co., Illinois. George was born 3, 4 on 26 Dec 1815 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. He died on 27 Apr 1877 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., Missouri.

George was a successful entrepreneur in a variety of businesses. He was a merchant, a flour manufacturer, and steamboat builder, owner and operator. His firm operated three of the largest flour mills in St. Louis, and a fleet of steamers on the lower Mississippi River. He designed and built the first steamer to carry 1,000 tons in only six feet of water; a design quickly copied by other builders.

The Atlantic and Mississippi Steamboat Company was inaugurated in 1866 with 28 steamboats, the finest ever consolidated on the river, and valued at $2,500,000. George Pegram was a principal stockholder. The impoverishment of the South following the Civil War paralyzed trade. Several of the boats were lost by fire and explosion. Finally the company was forced to sell the fleet at auction to pay indebtedness.

It was said that George was a man of large caliber, indomitable pluck, a great organizer, and regarded as a "commercial commodore." He had a cheerful disposition, and was loved by all of his employees.

Mr. Andrews was born in Sumner county, Ky., in 1830. He was but five years old when his mother, Mary T. Andrews, set out in company with friends for Illinois. His father, Baker Andrews, a man of wealth and position in his native place, died in Kentucky. To the care of his wife he left a family of six children; Mrs. Andrews became a resident of Carrollton in 1835, where Nathaniel J. Andrews, grew to manhood. Receiving a liberal education, he ventured forth as a farmer, which he followed very successfully many years of his life. In 1861, he was elected assessor and county treasurer, a position he filled to the satisfaction of all for a period of 10 years. With Jas. S. Vedder, Mr. Andrews became identified with the grocery trade, doing a prosperous business for one year, when Mr. Andrews disposed of his interest to Mr. Vedder. The following year he was elected sheriff of the county, holding this responsible position two years. After his retirement from official duties, Mr. Andrews turned his attention to his farm, comprising 300 acres of choice land. In 1852 he was married to Elizabeth Jones, a daughter of Dr. Jones, of Greene county. Of 11 children born of this marriage, nine are living - Catherine, Benjamin B., Lizzie, John B., Mattie V., Mary H., Nathaniel L., Lela Belle, and Beatrice. He in company with Col. Jacob Bowman laid out the town known as Brown's Grove, Pawnee county, Kan."

William married 1 (1) Martha Ward Pegram daughter of John Coleman Pegram and Caroline Pegram on 3 Jul 1849 in Greene Co., Illinois. Martha was born 2, 3 on 8 Apr 1834 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. She died on 1 Dec 1877 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois.

Helen married Judge Lawrence B. Stringer 1 on 18 Dec 1890. Lawrence was born 2 on 24 Feb 1866 in New Jersey. He died in 1942.

He wrote "History of Logan County, Illinois: A Record of Its Settlement, Organization, Progress and Achievement." published by Pioneer Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1911. The following biographical sketch of Lawrence B. Stringer, Editor, appears on pages 9 and 10:

"Lawrence B. Stringer was born February 24, 1866, and came, with his parents, from New Jersey to Illinois, when ten years of age. He received his primary education in public schools, was graduated from Lincoln University, now Lincoln College of the James Millikin University, with a degree of A.B., later was graduated from the Chicago College of Law, took the post-graduate course at the same institution, received the degree of L.L.B. from Lake Forest University, was admitted to the bar and began the practice of law in Lincoln, Ill. He was married December 18, 1890, to Miss Helen Pegram, daughter of W.A. Pegram, of Lincoln, Ill.

He was elected Representative in the Illinois General Assembly, in an adverse political district when 23 years of age and was re-elected to the same position two years later by an increased majority. While a member of that body, he was Chairman of the Committee on Education and fathered several measures along educational lines, among them being the present Compulsory Education Law, now upon the statute book of the state. As a membe of the Committee on Elections, he assisted in drafting and having passed the present Australian Ballot Law. He was also the author of several measures for the protection of coal miners in the state.

In 1900 he was elected to the Illinois State Senate, was his party's candidate for president of that body and by virtue thereof minority leader. He was also temporary and permanent chairman of the Illinois Democratic State Convention in 1892.

In 1904, at the age of 38 years, he was nominated for Governor of Illinois by the Democratic State Convention held that year, and despite the discouraging conditions which confronted his party, conducted a vigorous campaign and at the election received nearly 10, 000 more votes in the state than did his party's candidate for president. In this election, while Mr. Roosevelt, Republican candidate for President, carried Logan County by a plurality of 621, Judge Stringer's plurality, in the county, as Democratic candidate for Governor was 442, -- a difference of 1,063 votes.

This campaign will be remembered in the history of the state as one in which there was a complete absence of the usual vituperation and personal abuse, and at its close, Judge Stringer was tendered an appointment as Presiding Judge of the Illinois State Court of Claims, by Governor Deneen, his political opponent in the campaign, which position Judge Stringer accepted and still retains.

Judge Stringer has an extended reputation as a public speaker, having filled engagements upon the public rostrum in various capacities for the past twenty-five years. For three years he has been engaged in Chatauqua lecture work, under the auspices of one of the leading Lyceum Bureaus of the country and has addressed audiences in various states of the union. He is a member of the Illinois State Historical Society, and has given especial study and attention to the early history of Illinois, a subject upon which he has both lectured and written and concerning which he is regarded in the light of an authority. His knowledge upon this subject, largely secured through individual research, his experience in public life in the state, as well as his special taste and inclination for literary work, particularly along historical lines, render him peculiarly fitted and adapted to write a history of the county which is his home."

Benjamin was a farmer in Illinois for the most of his life. He was a Captain during the Civil War, in the 106th Regiment of Illinois, and he always carried that title. Here we have a second instance where a Pegram wore the Blue, against the gray of his Virginia kin.

The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 35 years. They have had 6 children, all living. This clearly disagrees with other sources which show that daughter, Olive, died in childhood.

Benjamin married 2 (1) Josephine McEvers 1 daughter of Elisha McEvers and Sarah Jane Knapp on 1 Mar 1851 in Winchester, Scott Co., Illinois. Josephine was born on 30 Sep 1829 in Montezuma, Pike Co., Illinois.

  2052 F v Althea T. Pegram was born 1, 2, 3 in Feb 1873 in Illinois.

Apparently Althea did not marry. The 1900 Census shows she was a school teacher. She is incorrectly shown as a male on the 1880 Census. In 1920 she is found living with her sister, Maude J. Williams and her husband where she is identified as sister-in-law.
  2053 F vi Maude J. Pegram was born 1, 2, 3 on 12 Aug 1874 in Illinois.

In 1900 she is found attending Valparaiso College in Porter Co., Indiana.
Maude married Edwin S. Williams. Edwin was born 1 in 1876 in Illinois.
2054 M vii William Baker Pegram was born 1, 2 on 16 Jul 1877 in Illinois.

549. Nathaniel Edward Pegram 1 (William Baker , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2 on 19 Nov 1830 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky.

Nathaniel was a leading business man of his community. He and his brother owned a number of grain elevators. It is said that "he belonged to that body of men who made Illinois grow from a sparsely settled Commonwealth to the Empire State of the Great Mississippi Valley."

The following little item appeared in the The Lincoln Herald on July 31, 1884:

"N. E. Pegram has a new white hat of the tile order of architecture. A St. Louis commission man sent it in acknowledgment of the fact that corn actually did sell for sixty cents, contrary to his prediction."

The following notice of a law-suit against the estate of Nathaniel Edward Pegram appeared in the Decatur Review on September 24, 1919 and names the his then living descendants, to-wit:

She showed her true Christianity, always amiable and happy in spite of being an invalid the past 8 years superinduced by four paralytic strokes. She believed in her Lord and always remarked, that He above would call her home when her time came. A nice example for the family and others to look upon and follow, an excellent wife and a good mother gone, but only for a short time when they who follow will be reunited thru all Eternity. She has suffered faithfully, but now she is rejoicing in the abode above, no pain, no suffering, but all glory.

The funeral was held Friday (today) afternoon from the M.E. church in our city at 2 o'clock with Rev. John Kruwell officiating, with burial in Union cemetery.
