2032. Blanche Pegram 1 (William Alexander , William Baker , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3 on 8 Apr 1854 in Greene Co., Illinois. She died on 19 Dec 1913 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois.

Another source gives Pike Co., Illinois as her place of birth.

Blanche married Andrew Layman son of Henry Layman and Elizabeth Kretzinger on 10 Sep 1874 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois. Andrew was born 1, 2 on 14 Apr 1851 in Bath, Mason Co., Illinois. He died on 6 Apr 1922 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The following is from "History of Logan County. Illinois" by Lawrence B. Stringer. Published by Pioneer Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1911: "The month of June, ... witnessed a number of severe storms in the county, which did considerable damage...During one of the heavier storms, considerable damage was done on the farm of Andrew Layman, east of Lincoln, corn cribs being demolished, trees twisted off, fragments of lumber scattered for over 200 yards, and a long piece of fencing was driven by the force of the storm into the roof of the house."

From "History of Logan County, Illinois" published by Inter-State Publishing Company, Chicago, 1886, p. 636-637: "Andrew Layman, youngest son of Henry and Elizabeth (Kretzinger) Layman, was born in Mason County, Illinois, April 14, 1852. He married Blanche Pegram, who was born in Pike County, Illinois, in 1854, a daughter of Alexander and Martha (Ward) Pegram, the father a resident of Lincoln and the latter deceased, dying December 1, 1876. To Mr. and Mrs. Layman have been born four children--Ward E., Nellie M., Beulah B. and Clifford A., the latter dying in infancy. Mr. Layman is at present residing on the northwest quarter of section 14, Chester Township, where he has a fine farm containing 380 acres, situated on sections 11 and 14."

The 1920 Census reflects that Andrew remarried after the death of Blanche. At the time of the 1920 Census, Fiske, Bernadine and Gladys were still living in the home.

  5719 M v Clinton B. Fiske Layman was born 1, 2 on 19 Dec 1890 in Logan Co., Illinois. He died in 1954 in Kansas.

2035. Thomas Lincoln Pegram 1 (William Alexander , William Baker , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3 on 4 Sep 1860 in Logan Co., Illinois.

Thomas married Alice Irene Curry on 30 Oct 1883. Alice was born about 1862 in New York.

In 1920 she is found as a widow, living in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Living with her are her son Harold who is still single and her daughter Helen and her husband, J. H. Schmidt.

Thomas and Alice had the following children:

  5724 M ii Harold Southerland Pegram was born 1 on 26 Jan 1885 in Macon Co., Ilinois. He died 2 on 17 Feb 1956 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.

When he signed the WWI Registration card, he was living in Muskogee, Oklahoma working in a drygoods store.
  5725 F iii Hellen Pegram was born in Apr 1888 in Macon Co., Ilinois.
        Hellen married J. H. Schmidt. J. H. Schmidt was born about 1889 in Germany.

2036. Mary Elizabeth Pegram 1 (William Alexander , William Baker , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2 on 7 Dec 1863 in Logan Co., Illinois.

Mary married Everett Willard Curry on 13 Feb 1884.

Edith married 2 James William Duff 1 son of Andrew McClure Duff and Isabelle (Belle) Johnson on 27 Mar 1886 in Logan Co., Illinois. James was born in Feb 1862 in Logan Co., Illinois.

2041. Samuel Marshall Pegram 1 (William Alexander , William Baker , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born on 29 Sep 1876 in Logan Co., Illinois.

He is listed as a veteran of the Spanish-American War as being a resident of Decatur, Illinois. Other sources give his middle name as Mayo. When he sigend the WWI Registration card, he was living in Muskogee, Oklahoma working as a salesman in a drygoods store.

Samuel married Cora Sampson on 1 Jan 1904.

The following is from a history of South Carolina newspapers:

"The Enterprise was established in 1887 by Walter Boylin, who owned a newspaper in Monroe, N. C., and sent a man to run the Chester operation. He sold the paper in 1891 to a Chester schoolteacher, J. T. Bigham, who published the paper for one year. Five years later in 1897, Bigham became owner and editor of The Chester Lantern. The paper was later owned by W. F. Caldwell and J. Dana Jones, and then J. Otis Hull of Rock Hill. C. N. Wrenshall of Lincolnton, N. C., became owner January 12, 1919, with J. E. Nunnery as editor/publisher. Ward W. Pegram Sr. and Stewart L. Cassells bought the paper and changed its name to The Semi-Weekly News. Pegram became the sole owner in 1922 and changed the name to The Chester News. His son, Ward W. Pegram Jr., inherited and ran the newspaper until he sold it to The Chester Reporter on September 13, 1971 to form the present News & Reporter. In 1971, Paul League was publisher, James G. McKeown Sr. was general manager and L. Don McKeown was editor. "

2042. William Alexander Pegram (William Alexander , William Baker , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 1 on 22 Jan 1886. He died 2 on 3 Nov 1961 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.

At the time he signed the WWI Civil Registration card, he was living in Louisville, Kentucky and working in the plumbing and heating business.

William married Mae Bacon in 1918. Mae was born 1 on 13 Feb 1888 in Illinois. She died 2 on 11 Apr 1977 in Illinois.

They had the following children:

  5733 M ii Robert Martin Pegram was born on 4 Jun 1919 in Illinois. He died on 23 Jul 1997 in San Diego, California.

Sarah married 2 Enoch T. Emery 1 on 20 May 1875 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois. Enoch was born in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois.

        Benjamin married Hazel Faye Carroll on 17 Jan 1912. Hazel was born on 4 Aug 1894. She died on 6 Feb 1930.

        Mary married Leo Warren Slagg. Leo was born on 27 Jan 1890. He died on 15 Jul 1975 in Bourbonnais, Illinois.

        Amy married Rober W. Marsh on 28 Jun 1914. Rober was born on 5 Apr 1892. He died on 24 Sep 1941.
5742 F viii Verna Virginia Margaret Emery was born on 1 Apr 1896. She died on 4 Mar 1992.

2056. Helen Mary (Pattie) Pegram (Nathaniel Edward , William Baker , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2, 3 on 4 Dec 1859 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois.

In 1920 she was a widow, living with her daughter

Helen married Albert T. Summers 1, 2, 3 son of Charles Summers and Cynthia M. Trogdon on 18 Oct 1881. Albert was born 4, 5, 6, 7 in Dec 1858 in Illinois. He died before 1920.

Apparently his father died when he was very young. In 1860 he is found in Paris, Edgar Co., Illinois, living with his mother, Cynthia Summers, age 22. At the time his mother was working as a teacher. In 1870, his mother had remarried to to Robert L. Watston, a physician, in Paris, Illinois. He apparently graduated from high school in Decatur, Illnois in 1875. A local newspaper said of his commencement speech entitled "Memory" that it is "..truly original. The address was given in a very forcible manner and without the least show of embarrassment". He must have been a very good student indeed since later in the same year, a local newspaper article says he was visiting the local newspaper where he previously worked as a typesetter and that he was currently a member of the sophmore class of Indiana Asbury University. A later local notice in 1878 says he is home until ".. near the commencement at Indiana Asbury University where he is a student". In 1880, he was single, still living in Paris, where his occupation was given as "lawyer".

  5744 M ii Infant Summers was born in Nov 1884 in Illinois. He died in Dec 1884 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois.

The notice of his death appeard in the Decatur Review, Dec. 14, 1884. The notice said the child died of actute bronchitis at the home of Mr. Pegram, Mrs. Summers father.

  5746 F iv Ruth Summers was born 1, 2 on 3 Oct 1891 in Illinois. She died 3 on 28 Dec 1947 in San Bernadino Co., California.

2061. Katherine Leighton Pegram (Nathaniel Edward , William Baker , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2 on 4 Jun 1878 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois.

In 1930, she was a widow, living with her sister-in-law, Eda K. Pegram.

Katherine married Edward Harris Smith in 1901. Edward was born in 1875.

They had the following children:

2062. Walker Abbott Pegram 1 (Thomas James , William Baker , Baker , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2 on 3 Dec 1876 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois. He died 3, 4 on 7 Aug 1932 in Clifton, Iroquois Co., Illinois.. He was buried in Union Cemetery, Lincoln, Ilinois.

He operated grain elevators in Lincoln at Skelton and New Holland, and at the time of his death owned and operated an elevator in Clifton, Illinois.

At the time of his father's death, in 1924, he was living in Kankekee, Illinois.

His WWI Draft Registration card gives his birth date as Dec. 5.

Walker married Blanche Duff 1, 2 daughter of William David Duff and Emeline Huntington Larson (Larison) on 5 Dec 1899 in Logan Co., Illinois. Blanche was born on 27 Jan 1879 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois. She died on 12 Nov 1974 in Naperville, , Illinois. She was buried in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois.

Blanche Duff was the sister of Elizabeth Hatton Duff who married Henry Baker Pegram.

They had the following children:

He lived in Chester Township, Illinois. at time of his father's death on October 11, 1924. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Illinois. and served on the Lincoln high school board of education.

George married Flora Belle McConnell daughter of Thomas Lester McConnell and Adah Belle Duff on 2 Sep 1902 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois. Flora was born on 25 Oct 1883 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois. She died on 3 Dec 1970 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois.
