Dr. Henry Hardaway Rives made his home at Petersburg, Tennessee, where he died December 2, 1866, and where the inscription on his tomb recites his birth in Dinwiddie county, Virginia, August 13, 1817, his death by cholera, and the tribute to him of "Generous to a fault." It is not known where he obtained his medical education which he practiced in his community and which he placed at the service of his country in the War for Southern Independence, C. S. A. Dr. Henry H. Rives was a man of more than ordinary ability. He was a physician of high standing, and a firm Democrat in politics. He was a forcible public speaker, and sometimes he was active in making speeches in behalf of his party and the cause of temperance.
Henry married (1) Martha Dandridge Stone 1, 2 daughter of Micajah Stone and Sarah Leftwich on 6 Jun 1837 in Marshall Co., Tennessee. Martha was born on 2 Apr 1821 in Lincoln Co., Tennessee. She died in Mar 1844 in Belleville, Lincoln Co., Tennessee. She was buried in Stone Cemetery.
Her father, Micajah Stone was a very wealthy planter, owning all the land on the west side of the turnpike running south from Oak Hill to Fayetteville for a distance of eight miles, and all the land on the east side for four miles.
Martha Dandridge (Stone) Rives, who died in was descended from the ancient Dandridge family of Virginia, to which the wife of George Washington belonged.

Exemplifying in his life the public spirit which has so consistently characterized the Rives family, of which he was a member, he served for twenty-five years as a trustee of Vanderbilt University.George married Mamie Carnes Robertson daughter of Dr. John S. Robertson and Nannie Carnes on 9 Nov 1887. Mamie was born 1 in Feb 1867 in Tennessee.
Apparently the couple had no children. The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 13 years but have had no children.
After her husband's death in 1922, she made a gift to Vanderbilt University of an auditorium to be known as the George Mitchell Neely Memorial Auditorium which was dedicated in 1925 at the semi-centennial celebration of the establishment of the University.
