MAN FALLS DEAD ON PORCH

Henry Brigance Succumbs to heart failure on porch of house as he seeks work..

Henry Brigance, nearly seventy -four years old fell dead at 5:25 p.m. yeasterda on the steps o f Dr. W.N. Davidson's home at 725 East Maple wherehe had called to ak for work. None of the Davidson family were at home at the time and the man's fall was seen by John Wilson Jr.' six year old son of Mr. & Mrs. V. W. Wilson of 731 East maple. The little boy ran into the house and told his mother of the man's fall and she called Dr.Davidson's office.. Soon a crowd gathered. The man was found to have died of acute dilatation of the heart. Mrs. Davidson recongnized him as a man who called at the house last week and whom she told to return later that she may have something for him to do. Mr. Brigance had completed some work in a nearby yard and apparently laid his tools down and mounted the steps when he fell just in front of the door.

The deceased lives at 117 West Greenlee and no funeral arrangements have yet been made.

Funeral services are to be held at ten oclock tomorrow morning at the Walters Funeral chapel , with Rev. Jones in charge. Burial will be made at Fairlawn cemetery. The Walters Funeral directors have charge.

The 1900 Census give Arkansas as place of birth.

They had the following children:

7442 M i C. C. Brigance 1 was born on 26 Mar 1887 in Texas. He died on 30 Dec 1887 in Wise Co. Texas.

The Reliques of Rives indicates that Ada Bell died in childhood but this was apparently in error since we have information from a family member about her family. She is shown as age 9 on the 1880 census but the 1900 Census gives a birthdate of 1868. The 1910 Census gives her age as 39.

Ada Bell later married her daughter Elizabeth's husband Charles Self in about 1909. In 1910, she is shown as Ada Self, the wife of Charles Self. Also in the home are William, James Melvin and Betty Louella. The Census shows they have been married less than a year. The 1910 Census shows she has had 5 children with 4 living. In 1920 she and her son, Jackson (Jack) self are found living with her son, William Cobb. In 1930, she is found living with her son, James M. Cobb and family, not far from her son William Thomas Cobb and Jackson C. Self.

Ada married (1) John Garland Cobb 1. John died in Maccomb Oklahoma.

They had the following children:

7452 F i Elizabeth Cobb 1 was born 2 in Apr 1886 in Texas. She died before 1910.

It is possible that "Lizzie" who appears as a daughter on the 1900 Cenus is not the same as Elizabeth who married Charlie Self.
Elizabeth married Charles Self 1 after 1900. Charles was born 2 in 1878 in Oklahoma.

Apparently there were no surviving children of this marriage since the only children in the home in 1910 were the Cobb children.
7453 M ii William Thomas Cobb was born on 8 Feb 1888. He died in Jun 1957.
7454 F iii Mary Cobb 1 was born 2 in Jan 1890 in Texas.

7455 M iv James Melvin Cobb was born about 1893.
7456 F v Betty Louella Cobb was born in 1895.

Ada married (2) Charles Self 1 about 1910. Charles was born 2 in 1878 in Oklahoma.

Apparently there were no surviving children of this marriage since the only children in the home in 1910 were the Cobb children.

They had the following children:

  7457 M vi Jackson C. Self 1 was born 2, 3 about 1910 in Oklahoma.

He was a switchman for the Great Northern R. R. at Troy, Montana. At the time of the 1930 Census, he was divorced, living in Los Angeles, California and working with the railraod.
Ernest married 1 Lena May Mullen in Jan 1919 in Spokane, Washington.
7460 M iii Herman Hershfield Rives was born on 25 Apr 1897. He died in 1898.

Benjamin married (3) Emma Jane Snelling daughter of Patton Anderson Snelling and Mary Washington Tuck on 10 Aug 1899. Emma was born 1 in May 1867 in Tennessee. She died 2 in Nov 1938 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.

They had the following children:

Like his brother, he became a building contrator in Birmingham, Alabama.

2667. John Robert Thomas Rives 1 (James Monroe Rives , Green (Buck) Rives , Unknown Son Rives , Mary Pegram , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3, 4 on 13 Jun 1875 in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

John Robert Thomas was educated in the common schools of Bedford county, Tennessee, and entered upon a railroad career at the age of fifteen, serving successively as news agent, flagman, and conductor on the L. & N. R. R. In 1921 he was made Deputy President of the Order of Railway Conductors of America and, in January 1927, Editor of the Railway Conductor, published by the Order of Railway Conductors in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His natural ability brought him to the fore wherever he exercised his talents. In 1915 he was elected Mayor of Inglenook, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama; was Coroner of Jefferson Co., Alabama, 1917-21; and in 1923 became a member of the Alabama Legislature from Jefferson county.

He was active in Alabama in the prohibition cause, having served as a member of the State Executive Committee for the ratification of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. He was Chairman of the first joint meeting of the four National Railway Brotherhoods that initiated the movement which culminated in the enactment of an eight-hour day for all railway employees.

In addition to these varied activities, he was one of the organizers of the Federated Bank & Trust Co. (now the Southern Bank & Trust Co.), of Birmingham, of which he was a director; and is a 32nd degree Mason.

John married 2 Mamie Lillian Gordon 1 daughter of Amzi Jenkins Gordon and Mary Adline Snell on 19 Jun 1895 in Tennessee.

They had the following children:

He was graduated from the University of Alabama law school (LL. B.) in 1924, having been a member of the Phi Alpha Delta and Sigma Chi fraternities, Skulls, Blackfriars (dramatic), and a member of the Executive Committee, Honor Committee, and Pan-Hellenic Council of the University. In 1923 he traveled for the University and in 1924 was Assistant Director of Athletics of that institution. In 1925 he entered the law firm of Loudon, Yancey, & Brewer, in Birmingham, Alabama.

She was from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, attended Judson College, Brenau College, and the University of Alabama (B. A., 1923; M. A., 1924).
