He served in the Confederate Army as a private in Co. C. 8th Tennessee Inf.
James married 1 Martha Jane Cates daughter of John Sikes Cates and Elizabeth Himes on 19 Sep 1865 in Monroe, Tennessee. Martha was born 2, 3 on 17 Sep 1833 in Shelbyville, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
Martha is shown as a widow on the 1880 Census. The name is spelled Reaves on the 1880 Census and Rives on the 1900 Census, In 1900 Martha was living with her son John. She shows she had had 5 children with 2 living.

701. Benjamin Watkins Leigh Rives 1, 2 (Green (Buck) Rives , Unknown Son Rives , Mary Pegram , Daniel , George ) was born 3, 4 on 7 Jun 1835 in Lincoln Co., Tennessee. He died on 3 Oct 1913 in June 14, 1827.
He served as a private in Co. K, 37th Ark. Inf., C. S. A., and after the war moved from Pine Bluff, Arkansas to Kankakee, Illinois , where he was a member of the firm of Rives & Fonville, his partner being a brother of Virginia Fonville, second wife of Willis Green Rives. Mr. Rives served as chief of police of Kankakee, 1890-91; as sgt.-at-arms of the Illinois House of Repr.; and as tax assessor at one time of Kankakee Co.
He adopted two children, Hugh Moore Rives (m. Miss Bledsoe, of Lincoln Co. Tenn., and d. 1911), and Anna Moore Rives who married a Mr. Squibb.

702. Robert Clay Rives 1 (Green (Buck) Rives , Unknown Son Rives , Mary Pegram , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3, 4 on 13 Mar 1837 in Marshall Co., Tennessee. He died 5 on 16 Jan 1914 in Petersburg, Lincoln Co., Tennessee.
R. C. Rives, saddler, of Petersburg, was born in Marshall County March 12, 1838. His father, Green Rives, was of English descent, born in Virginia in 1773, and came to Tennessee in 1830. He was a schoolmate and personal friend of Winfield Scott, and was married three times. Our subject is the son of his wife Susan (Woodward) Rives, who was born in Virginia in 1810. She died in 1850, as did her husband. Our subject was reared on a farm and March 12, 1862, married Rebecca J. Gillian, who was born in Alabama April 2, 1839. To them were born twelve children, these five now living: Anna, Mary C., Sarah, Lutha G. and Bertie. After his father's death our subject resided with his brother twelve months, and then learned the saddler's trade . After some time he and his brother B. W. became partners in business, continuing until the war, when he enlisted in Company C, Eighth Tennessee Infantry, but after a short time was discharged on account of ill health. After the war he again opened a shop at Petersburg, where he has since resided, with the exception of four years, when he had a shop at Belfast, and spent one year at Lewisburg. Since December, 1885, he and O. S. Christopher have been partners in business, and keep the largest stock in the county. Mr. Rives is conservative in politics, but of late years has voted the Democratic ticket. He belongs to the Masonic fraternity , and he and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church.

705. Ann Mason Harper (Elizabeth Winfield Scott , William Scott , Sarah Pegram , Daniel , George ) was born 1 about 1794 in Virginia. She died on 17 Jun 1851 in Canton, Madison Co., Mississippi.
In 1850, she is found living in the home of John Cameron in Madison Co., Mississippi.
Her obituary published July 5, 1851 in The American Citizen, Canton, Misssissippi reads:
Ann M. Bransford: Died at Canton, Miss., on the 17th instant, Mrs. Ann M. Bransford, in the 60th year of her age. She was a native of the County of Dinwiddie, Va., but has resided in the county of Madison, in this state, for the last sixteen years. Note: Her age as given is the obituary is wrong.

Obviously something is incorrect here. Either her birthdate is wrong or else the mother of Henry Field is the first wife of Thomas Field. We will leave this for now just to prompt more research to clarify this relationship. She is shown on DAR application to be his second wife of Thomas Field. Actually Martha Winfield Harper would have been a niece to his first wife, Martha Scott.

The 1880 Census appears to be in error. It gives her age as 14 but she is on the 1860 Census as age 6.2716 F v Virginia Walker was born 1, 2 in 1856 in Illinois.
Like her sister, her age seems to be off by 10 years on the 1880 Census which shows her to be age 17.2717 F vi Mary Tennessee Walker was born in 1860. 2718 F vii Alice Walker was born about 1864 in Illinois.
