Nelson O. DuVal, Jr., 91, a lifelong native of Norfolk, VA, passed away on March 2, 2006. He was a preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris H. DuVal. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy D. Jones and son-in-law, Hurst Jones of Cape Charles, VA; daughter, Pinny Barbour of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandchildren, Stephen, Megan and Brent Barbour; granddaughter-in-law, Laura Barbour; two great grandchildren, Caden and Lilly Barbour. He is also survived by his sister, Isabelle Holmes of Virginia Beach, VA; and two nephews, Don and Aubrey Holmes. The family owes much gratitude to his caregivers, Beverly Sealy, Liz Gobern and Freda Shields and special friend and caregiver, Sharon Holland. Nelson worked with Norfolk Southern Railroad and Nehi Beverages before beginning a very successful career in real estate beginning in 1953-1990 with companies McClesky Realtors, Goodman Segar Hogan and Larasan Realty.Nelson had a long career in baseball and softball beginning in 1935 playing with the Norfolk Tars, Norfolk Orioles, Abbotts Collegiants and with the Chesapeake Athletic Club. He was inducted into the Tidewater Virginia ASA Hall of Fame on October 18, 2003. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home on Tidewater Drive in Norfolk, VA. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

Marshall Cline Harmon Sr., 84, died in his home of natural causes Feb. 29, 2004. He was born the son of Nettie D. Lehmbeck and C. Harry Harmon in Canton, Ill. March 13,1919. As a child Marshall moved frequently with his family, He attended 10 different schools, including Roosevelt and West High in Waterloo. Marshall graduated in 1938 from Port Huron High (Port Huron, Mich.) where he played on the state champion football team. After graduation, Marshall attended Port Huron Jr. College and Michigan State University where he played violin and majored in engineering. He left school in 1941 for military service in the Army Engineer Corps and was commissioned in June 1942. While stationed in Virginia he met Lt. Evelyn N. DuVal (Army Nurse Corps) and they married Nov. 17, 1942, Their first son Marshall Jr., was born in Louisiana in 1943; Jay, their second, was born in Virginia in 1945. While in the service, Marshall wrote the Foundry manual for the U.S. Army, trained many of the front line foundry teams, and attained the rank of Captain. In December 1945 he left the service and returned to Waterloo to work alongside his father in the family business, the Waterloo Foundry Co. He later became its president. He also owned Art Bronze Company for a decade. A daughter, Cynthia, was born in 1949. After retiring from the foundry he worked as a Realtor and served on the Waterloo Water Works Commission. Marshall was active in Boy Scouts and served as Cub Master at Irving Elementary School. He also was a 50-plus year member of the Masons, a member of the Rotary Club, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and on the original committee that developed Hawkeye Community College. He loved his church, Westminster Presbyterian, and held many positions over the years including deacon, trustee, elder, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and was the first president of Westmixers. He was especially proud of being on the committee that oversaw the building of the church. In his later years as a grandfather and great-grandfather, he was known as the "cookie maker" ensuring that every family member attending Sunday's weekly lunch had a dozen of his special cookies (and sometimes chocolate pudding, too). He taught his family devotion to God, love of country, and self-sacrifice. He was a good man and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn; his daughter-in-law, Marian Harmon of St. Charles, Ill.; son, Jay (Dee) Harmon and daughter Cindy (Dennis) Johnson, all of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, Vicki (James) Adamson, Christy (Paul) Molidor, Jason (Jill) Harmon, Niki (Dave) Boller, Anne Harmon and her fiance Ted Silverstein, David Harmon, Nathan Harmon, Cori (John) Sauer, Jessica (Shane) Williams; two stepgrandchildren, Teesha (Ricki) Peters and Denny (Amy) Johnson, IlI.; 10 great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren; a nephew, John (Carole) Humont; and a niece, Marianne (Stephen) Willard. He was preceded in death by his son, Marshall Jr. on Feb. 2, 2004; his parents; and his sister, Iris Humont. Visitation will be at Locke Funeral Home, 1519 W. Fourth St., on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1301 Kimball Ave. at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004.

Pulliam of Richmond, William E. DuVal II (Cyndi) of Chester, and Roxie D. Stone (Ray) of Sandston; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Harmon of Waterloo, Iowa, Pearl Moore of Richmond; one brother, Raymond DuVal of Newport News. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2004, at Browning Funeral Home in Keysville. The burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte Court House. Kenneth Hiller Jr. (Barbara Anne Bentson) of Chaska, Minn.; daughter, Minnesota State Senator Ann Lillnette Hiller Rest of New Hope; brothers, John R. Zartman Jr. (Clara), Elmer N. Zartman (Shirley); sister-in-law, Martchen S. Hiller, all of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.
