1769. William Washington Humphries 1 (Martha Elizabeth Gregory , Elizabeth (Betsey) Pegram , Edward , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born on 20 Jun 1841 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi. He died on 6 Feb 1904 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi.

W W Humphries, Jr. graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1858, and in 1860 he obtained a law degree from Cumberland Law School in Lebanon Tennessee.

He was barely 20 when the War Between the States broke out. He served in Company H of the 35th Miss Volunteer Infantry and rose to the rank of Captain. At one point he was captured but made good his escape by seizing his captors saber when the Yankee officer stuck it in the ground to get a drink alongside a stream. The saber is a treasured family heirloom to this date.

After the war he and General E T Sykes formed the law partership of Humphries & Sykes in Columbus and both prospered. In 1880 the Capt purchased the stately ante-beUum mansion Riverview-- which was featured by LIfe Magazine in its 1945 series "Life Goes To a Party". In 1880 he was also elected to the Miss. State Legislature and served a 4 year term. According to the History of Mississippi by Ethridge, the Legislature almost refused him a seat when it became known that he had fought in a duel, but the seat was proffered when he proved the duel took place in another State.

Quoting Dr. W. L. Lipscomb from his 1909 book A History of Columbus in the 19th Century, "... Capt W. W. Humphries represents his father's intellect and energy- in the army, at the bar, on the legislative floor-- wherever his native town and state has needed a man to defend their honor and advance their interest, he has been ever ready to expend his money, time and talent in their behalf." In a 1905 letter-to-the -editor of the Columbus Commercial Dispatch, one of the Captain's former subordinates lauded the compassion which Capt. Humphries held for troops under his command, and for his vain attempt as Port Commander at Vicksburg to defend the port with only sick and lame troops. The lengthy letter ended "Peace to thee, Capt Humphries; may the sod rest lightly on the form which held thy restless spirit".

William married 1 (1) Fanny Randall (Shanny) Moore daughter of Maj. Moore and Ann Oliver on 11 Jun 1886. Fanny was born on 10 Jun 1859 in Dearbrook Mississippi. She died on 6 Dec 1936 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi.

She was a devout Presbyterian, and along with her sister Annie and a few other church ladies, initiated a program of care giving to destitute children; their program evolved into Palmer Home for Children in Columbus.

  5351 M i Edward Watson (Bubba) Humphries was born on 11 Oct 1887 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi. He died on 2 May 1948 in San Diego, San Diego Co., California.

After starting his career as a wholesale grocer supplier, he relocated to California where he became a stokebroker and semi-professional bridge player.
        Edward married Ellen Gray Banks daughter of James Banks and Julia Coleman on 16 Feb 1912 in Meridian, Mississippi. Ellen was born on 17 Oct 1893 in Eutaw, Alabama. She died on 5 Dec 1976 in Eutaw, Alabama.
  5352 F ii Frances Moore Humphries was born on 27 Dec 1896 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi. She died on 25 May 1937 in Memphis , Tennessee.

William married 2 (2) Mary Thomas (Mollie) Jones 1 on 27 Jul 1871. Mary was born 3 on 12 Feb 1853 in Canton, Mississippi. She died 4 on 10 Mar 1885.

Mary purportedly had 6 children, all of whom died without issue.

They had the following children:

  5353 F iii Mary Thomas (Mamie) Humphries 1 was born about 1873.

According to Charles Humphries, there is conflicting information on Mamie. One source says she died unmarried. Another suggests that she married a Patterson from Virginia and had one child
  5354 M iv William Washington Humphries was born on 26 May 1875. He died 1 on 31 Jul 1896.

He died of typhoid fever at age 21.
  5355 M v Gregory Pegrarn Humphries was born about 1877.

Gregory was a railroad engineer and was killed when his engine boiler exploded. Supposedly his wife remarried and lived in Birmingham. No children.
  5356 M vi Henry Hart Humphries was born on 6 Jan 1881. He died on 26 Feb 1905 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi.

He drowned at age 24 after a fall from a bridge.
  5357 M vii Samuel Humphries was born in 1884.
  5358 M viii Eugene P Humphries was born in 1879.

Eugene was a chemist. He died without issue.

1771. Elizabeth Pegram Humphries 1 (Martha Elizabeth Gregory , Elizabeth (Betsey) Pegram , Edward , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born about 1846 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi.

Elizabeth married James Franklin 1, 2 son of Albert C Franklin and Watkins Henrietta on 18 Apr 1866. James was born in Oct 1850 in Sumner Co., Tennessee. He died on 2 Sep 1891 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee.

They had the following children:

5359 F i Bessie P. Franklin was born on 16 Feb 1870. She died on 26 Feb 1927.
  5360 M ii James Franklin was born 1 on 2 Dec 1873 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi. He died 2 on 29 Dec 1873.
  5361 M iii Harry Franklin was born on 29 Feb 1876 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi.
        Harry married Lizzie Pierce 1. Lizzie was born before 1880 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi.
  5362 iv Verneil Franklin 1 was born 2 on 23 Oct 1878 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi. Verneil died 3 on 29 Jul 1879 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi.

1772. Martha Pegram Sykes Gregory (Edward Herbert Gregory , Elizabeth (Betsey) Pegram , Edward , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2, 3 on 12 Feb 1849 in Lowndes Co., Mississippi. She died 4 on 5 May 1935 in McLennan Co., Texas. She was buried 5 in Oakwood Cemetery, McLennan Co., Texas.

Martha married 2, 3 Major Robert Smith Donnell 1 son of James Webb Smith Donnell and Marie Louisa Jones on 26 Nov 1869 in Lowndes Co., Mississippi. Robert was born 4, 5, 6 on 27 Jan 1842 in Limestone Co., Alabama. He died on 9 May 1916 in Waco, McLennan Co., Texas. He was buried 7 in Oakwood Cemetery, McLennan Co., Texas.

The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 30 years. They have had 14 children with 6 living.

  5364 F ii Virginia Sykes Donnell 1 was born 2, 3, 4 on 5 Oct 1870 in Limestone Co., Alabama. She died 5 on 11 May 1967 in McLennan Co., Texas. She was buried 6 in Oakwood Cemetery, McLennan Co., Texas.

The 1900 Census gives her year of birth as 1877.
        Virginia married M. C. Houston Park 1 son of Robt. W. Park and Houston Lelia. M. C. Houston Park was born 2 on 4 Mar 1861. He died 3 on 17 Mar 1935 in McLennan Co., Texas. M. C. Houston Park was born 4 in Oakwood Cemetery, McLennan Co., Texas.
5365 M iii James Webb Smith Donnell was born on 21 Dec 1872. He died on 27 Sep 1947.
  5366 M iv Edward Gregory Donnell was born on 11 Feb 1874.
  5367 F v Irene Gilmer Donnell was born on 10 Feb 1875.

1781. Virginia Coleman 1 (John George Pegram Coleman , Martha (Patsy) Pegram , John , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3 on 19 Oct 1832 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. She died on 6 Jan 1900 in Perry Co., Alabama. She was buried in Episcopal Cemetery, Uniontown, Perry, Alabama.

She and her daughter are back in her father's home in 1870.

Virginia married W. O Key. W. O Key was born 1 in 1822 in Maryland.

In 1850 he was still single, living in Mobile, Alabama, where he was working as a clerk with C. J. McRae.

1785. Ida Coleman (John George Pegram Coleman , Martha (Patsy) Pegram , John , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2 in Jul 1851 in Marengo Co., Alabama.

In 1920 she was living with her son, George, in Syracuse, New York.

Ida married Dr. William Goodwyn Nixon on 30 Jan 1873 in Lindon, Marengo Co., Alabama. William was born 1 in Dec 1834 in Mississippi. He died in 1902. He was buried in Episcopal Cemetery, Uniontown, Perry, Alabama.

The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 27 years. They have had 2 children, both living in the home.

  5380 M ii George Coleman Nixon was born 1 in Jul 1882 in Marengo Co., Alabama.

In 1910 George and Kate were living in East Orange, New Jersey where George was employed as a metalugical engineer and in 1920 they were living in Syracuse, New York. There were no children in the family.
        George married 1 Kate Estelle Shakaw on 9 Jun 1909 in Marengo Co., Alabama. Kate was born about 1882 in Alabama.

1790. Edward Pegram 1, 2 (Edward Oscar Esau , John , John , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 3, 4, 5, 6 on 29 Sep 1869 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia.

Edward married Ida Adell Lewis daughter of George Bernard Lewis and Nannie Thomas Wilkerson on 18 Aug 1892 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. Ida was born 1, 2 in 1877 in Virginia.

They had the following children:

5382 M ii Willie Bernard Pegram was born on 1 Oct 1894. He died in 1920.

John married Annie Electra Slate on 15 Feb 1898. Annie was born 1 on 12 Jun 1870 in Virginia. She died on 12 Jun 1941.

1797. Elizabeth Davis 1 (Rebecca Woodward , William F. Woodward , Elizabeth Pegram , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born in 1826 in Tennessee.

She is shown as Elizabeth Blackwell on the 1850 census living with Zachariah and Rebecca along with 2 young children. We can not be positive that she is a daughter but felt the most likely explanation was that her husband had died and she moved back home. We are listing her as a daughter pending further clarification.

Elizabeth married Blackwell.

They had the following children:

1799. William Woodward 1 (Gorman (Jarman) Woodward , William F. Woodward , Elizabeth Pegram , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2 on 13 Dec 1833 in Tennessee. He died on 30 Sep 1866.

William married Mary Doak Wood on 1 May 1856. Mary was born on 6 Nov 1835. She died on 14 Jun 1876.

Another source gives his name as John D. Woodward and place of birth as Lincoln Co., Tennessee.

John married Martha S. Glenn 1 daughter of John F. Glenn and Lucy Hardin on 29 Jul 1856. Martha was born in 1840 in Liberty Valley, Marshall Co., Tennessee.

The 1900 Census of Marshall Co., Tennessee shows the couple have had 3 children, all living. They are living with their son George who is still single.
