The 1880 Census shows him to be younger, i.e. age 29.
Martha married William M. Cannon son of Wiley Cannon and Mary Green on 7 Mar 1874 in Wilkinson Co., Georgia. William was born 1, 2, 3 in Nov 1850 in Morgan Co., Alabama. He died 4 on 11 Apr 1932 in Wilkinson Co., Georgia.
The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 26 years. They have had 3 children with 2 living. Only Edward H. remains at home. They were living next door to William F. Tarpley, Martha's brother, at the time of the Census. In 1920, Edward Butler, age 17, is living in their home and identified as their grand-son.

Sarah married Francis Marion Fordham 1 son of Francis A. Fordham and Leah. Francis was born 2, 3 on 14 Jul 1848 in Wilkinson Co., Georgia. He died 4 on 25 Nov 1916. He was buried 5 in Big Sandy Baptist Church Cemetery, Wilkinson Co., Georgia.

A Tribute to Brother F. M. Fordham
In memory of Brother F. M. Fordham on the 25 day of November 1916, the angel of death invaded the home of Mrs Sallie Fordham. Brother Fordham was born June 14, 1848 in Wilkinson County Georgia. He united with the Baptist Church at Big Sandy at the age of 16 years old and was a true Christian and was loved by everybody. Brother Fordham leaves a wife, two sons and two daughters, He was a great sufferer for several years. Yet he bore his afflictions with Christian like attitude and said God knows what was best. All that loving hearts could do to stay the master death was of no avail. God called and he hast go. It was hard , so hard to bow submission to the will of the Heavenly Father. When it comes to giving up such charms as he was, but God knows best and doeth all things for the best. May He guide us in this sinful world of trials and give us grace to bare our burdens.
His tombstone inscription reads "Farewell my wife and children all from you a father Christ doth call."

In 1850 he has left home and living in what is probably a boarding house. His occupation is listed as painter.
The following is from Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861 - 1865 compiled by Lillian Henderson, ca 1900:
"Tarpley, Edward A: ---- private April 26, 1861. Captured, Deep Bottom, Va. August 16, 1864. Sent to Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga. for exchange November 15, 1864. Absent, sick, February 28, 1865. No later record"
Edward married Nancy E.. Nancy was born 1, 2, 3 in 1845 in Georgia. She died after 1920.
In 1900, Nancy is listed as a widow. She shows she has had 6 children with 4 living. Richard, Mack and Oscar are still in the home. Since we know that George A. was already married with his own family, we must assume that Julia has died.
In 1910, she shows she has had 6 children with 3 living.
In 1920 she is found as a widow, living with her son, Mack.

In 1860, the couple were living with his parents. The 1860 Census shows his father was the local sheriff.

The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 29 years. They have had 6 children, all living. The 3 youngest children are still at home. We do not yet have the names of the older children.
He is shown as age 2 on the 1850 Census but we will accept his birthdate based on the 1900 Census.

He appears as James E., son of Edward J. on the1860 Census of Wilkinson Co., Georgia but later his name appears as Edward J. Based on a biographical sketch done by a son in 1941, there seems to be little question that they are the same person.
Edward married Mary J. (Jennie) Swanson about 1878. Mary was born 1 in Jan 1857 in Georgia.
