5166. Richard Henry Baker 1, 2 (Anna Maria May , Mariah (Marion) Ward Pegram , John , Edward , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 3 on 29 Nov 1855 in Petersburg, Independant City, Virginia. He died 4 on 10 Mar 1930.

Richard Henry (3) Baker, eldest son of Richard Henry (2) and Anna Maria (May) Baker, was born in Petersburg, Virginia, November 29, 1855. He was educated in private schools of Norfolk, Virginia, Hanover Academy, and the University of Virginia, pursuing at the latter institution the study of law for two years, 1876-78. After two years he withdrew, continuing to study under the preceptorship of his honored father, then senior member of the law firm of Baker & Walke, of Norfolk, Virginia. He continued with that firm until his admission to the bar in 1880, when Baker & Walke dissolved, father and son then forming a law partnership that continued until dissolved by the death of the senior partner, February 1, 1911. The life of Richard Henry (3) Baker is one of wide activities. A large part of his business has been the management and settlement of estates in the courts of chancery, and acting as general counsel for various companies and corporations. He was learned in the law, skillful in its application, and guided by the highest principles of integrity. In his private life he was true to the code that governs men of honor and is held in highest esteem. He had interests outside of his profession, and held directorships in many Virginia corporations. He was a member of the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was a director of several charitable organizations of the city, among them the Jackson Orphan Asylum, Seamen's Friend Society and the Church Home. He was an Episcopalian in religious faith, and a Democrat in politics.

Mr. Baker married, October 25, 1885, Annie M., daughter of James Barron Hope. Children: Annie Hope, deceased; Maria May; Jane Hope.

Richard married 1 Ann Mallory Hope daughter of James Barron Hope and Ann Beverly Whiting on 25 Oct 1885 in St. Paul's Church, Norfolk, Virginia. Ann was born 2 on 5 Mar 1861 in Hampton, Virginia.

In 1910 Kate and her husband were living with her father. Also in the household is Lelia, age 22, identified as grand-daughter.

Kate married 2, 3 George G. Hobson 1 about 1884 in Virginia. George was born 4, 5 about 1854 in Virginia.

Other sources have given his place of birth as England but the 1900 census shows that he was born in Virginia.The census indicates the couple have been married for 16 years. They have had one child.

He attended the University of Virginia and Columbia University in Maryland. He was a physician. The 1900 census shows the couple have been married for six years. They have had two children, both living in the home.

5195. Robert Pegram Holt 1 (Margaret (Maggie) Pegram , Robert Baker , John , Edward , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3, 4 on 6 Dec 1880 in Virginia.

He attended the University of Virginia and became President of Schmelz National Bank in New Port News, Virginia as well as Postmaster of New Port News, Virginia. The Jan. 2, 1907 edition of the Washington Post lists him as a member of the Govenor's staff.

Robert married Nora Carlyle Herbert on 3 Jun 1908. Nora was born 1, 2, 3 about 1883 in Virginia.

The 1900 Census gives his occupation as "Traveling Insurance Agent."

Robert married Charlotte Duncan (Lottie) Hodges daughter of Col. Harry Hodges and Martha Anne Peters. Charlotte was born 1 about 1887 in Virginia.

She was the sister of Col. Harry Hodges, who was a commandant at the Virginia Military Institute. Her parents are taken from the obituary of her brother, Col. harry Hodges who died in 1921.

They had the following children:

  11624 M i Rev. Robert Baker Pegram was born 1, 2 on 27 Feb 1913 in Richmond, Virginia. He died 3 on 4 Nov 1977 in Rome, Italy. He was buried 4 in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.

He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and later became an Episcopal Priest. He was Rector of various parishes in Maryland.
        Robert married 1 Elizabeth Ann Barton daughter of Rev. Michael R. Barton and Unknown on 20 Nov 1954.

5198. Lucy Cargill Pegram 1 (James West , Robert Baker , John , Edward , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2 in Mar 1875 in Petersburg, Independant City, Virginia. She died 3 on 7 Jul 1960. She was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.

Lucy married Arthur (Archie) Scrivenor 1, 2 on 8 Jun 1898. Arthur was born 3 in 1866 in Lincolnshire, England. He died 4 on 8 Sep 1950.

He was both an engineer and a patent attorney. In 1947 his address was given as 1002 West Ave., Richmond. He is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.

5199. Emma (Emcie) Blacknall Pegram (James West , Robert Baker , John , Edward , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 1, 2, 3 on 8 Aug 1877 in Petersburg, Independant City, Virginia. She died on 25 Dec 1951 in Newport, Rhode Island. She was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

Her obituary from the Newport daily News on Dec. 26, 1951, reads:

Mrs. Emma Pegram Johnston, wife of Rear Adm. Rufus Z. Johnston, U. S. N., retired, of 261 Gibbs avenue, died Christmas Day at the Naval Hospital after a month's illness. Mrs. Johnston was born 74 years ago in Petersburg, Va., daughter of the late Capt. James West Pegram, Confederate Navy, and Mrs. Pegram, and grand-daughter of the late Capt. Robert Pegram, U.S.N., and Mrs. Pegram. Her marriage to Admiral Johnston took place in 1903. During World War 1, when her husband commanded the Naval Training Station here, she was active in recreation and welfare work among enlisted men. In recent years she helped in the annual sale for the blind. Besides her husband, Mrs. Johnston leaves a son, Capt. Rufus Z. Johnston, Jr., U.S.A. on duty at the Pentagon in Washington; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Roell, wife of the Rev. Rudolph Roell, rector of St. Paul's Church, Dedham. Mass.; and two sisters, Miss Eliza Pegram and Mrs. Arthur Scrivenor of' Richmond, Va. Private funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at her residence. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

Emma married Admiral Rufus Zenas Johnston son of Robert Zenas Johnston and Catherine Martha Caldwell in 1903. Rufus was born 1 on 7 Jul 1874 in Lincolnton, North Carolina. He died on 4 Jul 1959. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

The 1920 Census shows he was a Naval Officer. He was the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

His obituary from the New Port Daily News on July 6, 1959 reads in part: "Rear Aden. Rufus Zenas Johnston, USN (ret.). 85. holder of the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross, a Newport resident for many years, died at his home 261 Gibbs Ave., on Saturday.

Admiral Johnston first came to Newport in 1910 as Naval Training Station executive officer. He returned in 1915 to as its commanding officer for two years. In 1918. injured at sea, he was confined to the Naval Hospital here, and attended the Naval War College during his convalescence. He later served as chief of staff at the Naval War College.

Retiring in 1930, Admiral Johnston became active in civic affairs. He was vice president of the Seamen's Church Institute and member of the board of managers of the Navy YMCA. He was named to the city's park commission and was its chairman for six years. He was naval aide on the staff of Gov. Theodore Francis Green.

Born June 7, 1874, in Lincolnton. N. C., the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Robert Zenas Johnston, he entered the Naval Academy at the age of 17, and was graduated with the class of 1895.

He was on the USS Oregon during its trip around South America to participate in action in he Spanish-American War off Cuba.

He was commissioned a captain in 1918 and retired in that rank. He was promoted to rear admiral on the retired list June 9. 1948, under a law promoting retired personnel to the next higher grade if they had been decorated for bravery in action.

Admiral Johnston received the Congressional Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism at the occupation of Vera Cruz in 1914. When he commanded the USS Utah in 1924, he took a special mission headed by Gen. John J. Pershing around South America. He was chief of staff of the First Naval District when he retired.

In addition to his medal of honor he received the gold medal for marksmanship from the Naval Academy; Battle of Santiago medal; Spanish Campaign medal; Philippine Campaign medal; China Relief medal; Mexican Campaign medal, World War I Medal with Clasp: Navy Cross for convoy duty; letter of commendation from Secretary of War Baker and the Order of the Bust of Bolivar awarded him in 1923 by Venezuela.

His wife. the former Miss Emcie Pegram, daughter of Capt. and Mrs. James West Pegram of Richmond, Va., died here Dec. 25. 1951.

Surviving are a son, Maj. Rufus Z. Johnston Jr.. USA. stationed in Korea who has arrived home by air; a daughter. Mrs. Elizabeth Roell, wife of the Rev. Rudolph Roell, rector of St. Paul's Church, Dedham, Mass., and a sister, Mrs. Robert S. Abernathy of Winter Haven. Fla. Another daughter, Catherine Caldwell Johnston, died in 1914.

Funeral services will be held in the Johnston home on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Burial will be on Thursday in Arlington National Cemetery."

We have seen a letter from a Rudolph Roell of Dedham, Mass. which indicates he was probably a 1933 graduate of Princeton, Univ.
  11627 M ii Rufus Z. Johnston was born 1 on 19 Mar 1916 in Rhode Island. He died in Sep 1972.

5201. Robert Baker Pegram 1 (Robert Baker , Robert Baker , John , Edward , Edward , Daniel , George ) was born 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 on 22 Aug 1874 in Marion, Perry Co., Alabama. He died on 20 Jul 1954 in Atlanta, Fulton Co., Georgia.

He attained considerable success in the railroad field. He was an official of the Southern Railroad for many years, and became Vice-President of the System. In addition he was President of the Atlanta Terminal Company, and President of the Tallulah Falls Railway, one of Georgia's most famous short lines. Pegram railroad yards in Atlanta bears his name.  Robert Baker III was also a poet, and a selected number of his poems were published on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, "by those who were close to him and who appreciated his depth of character and youthful spirit," 22 August 1944.

The following obituary appeared in the Chattanooga, Tennessee Times:

Atlanta, July 20 -- Robert Baker Pegram III, 80, retired vice president of the Southern Railway, died here today following a long illness. He was the father of Mrs. DeSales Harrison of Chattanooga. Mr. Pegram was with the railway 54 years before his retirement in 1945. He served as a director of various affiliates of the Southern and was a director of the First National Bank of Atlanta before his retirement. He was born in Marion, Ala. His paternal grandfather, Capt. Robert Baker Pegram I, served in the U.S. Navy (1829-1861) and the Confederate Navy (1861-1865). Pegram was educated in the public and private schools of Memphis.

He entered railway service in 1890 as a utility clerk in the office of the assistant general freight agent at Memphis. Rising through various positions in St. Louis, Charleston, S.C., Birmingham and Washington, he served from 1920 until his retirement in 1945 as vice president of the Southern Railway System in Atlanta. On the date of his retirement, the railroad's South Shop here was named Pegram Shop in his honor. An Episcopalian, Mr. Pegram was long active in the civic, cultural and social life of Atlanta. He held membership in the Piedmont Driving Club, Capital City Club and Ten Club of Atlanta and the St. Andrew's Society of Charleston.

Mr. Pegram is survived by is wife, one daughter, Mrs. DeSales Harrison of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; one son, R.B. Pegram IV of Atlanta; two grandsons, DeSales Harrison Jr. of Atlanta, and Robert Pegram Harrison of Lookout Mountain; four granddaughters, Misses Susan and Anne Pegram of Atlanta, Mrs. Virginia Harrison Byrd of New York City, and Miss Nancy Knight Harrison of Lookout Mountain, and four great-granddaughters, Misses Susan, Alexa and Julia Harrison of Atlanta, and Miss Virginia Byrd of New York City.

Robert married Susan Mary Wright daughter of William S. Wright and Mary Frances Holt on 14 Jul 1897. Susan was born 1, 2, 3 on 6 Aug 1875 in Tennessee. She died on 1 Nov 1959 in Atlanta, Fulton Co., Georgia.

They had the following children:

The notice of his graduation from the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland appeared in the Washington Post on March 21, 1907.

At the time of the 1920 Census his occupation is shown as Naval Officer and the Census notes that he is at sea.

George married Jane Handy daughter of E. G. Handy and Unknown about 1910. Jane was born 1 in 1894 in Natchez, Mississippi.

In her DAR papers she is identified as Lelia Pegram Marshall. Her DAR lineage is give as follows:

Thomas Marshall, (1730-1802), commanded a regiment in many battles and the House of Delegates of Virginia voted him a sword for bravery. He was born in Westmoreland Co., Va.; died in Mason Co., Ky.

John Marshall, (1755-1835), was lieutenant under his father at the battle of Great Bridge and served as captain in the campaign of the Jerseys.

Lelia married 1, 2 James John Marshall son of Charles Shackleford Marshall and Cary Randolph Jones on 2 Sep 1899 in Leeds, Fauquier Co., Virginia. James was born on 12 May 1869. He died in 1929.
