My Grandfather, James Reubin Rose met my grandmother, Mimie Hamilton Gilmour, when he was visiting his sister Nell in the Washington, DC area. He was reputed to have a wonderful, strong singing voice and was much sought after to entertain at social functions. It was at one of these functions where they met.

Mimie Gilmour's family was socially prominent and living in the Washington, DC area, she having emigrated to the USA with her father and mother sometime prior to 1906. Her brothers had emigrated to this country sometime before her. Her family considered the Roses to be socially inferior to the Gilmours, a belief she was never allowed to forget, especially by her sisters.
