The following biographical sketch is taken from History of Mississippi, the Heart of the South:
Thomas Edward Pegram, a leader in financial circles of Ripley, is also filling the office of circuit judge and directs his talents into channels which benefit his fellowmen, at the same time bringing him the merited reward of intelligently directed labor. He was born in Benton County, Mississippi, November 18, 1876, and comes of Scotch and Irish ancestry. His parents, John Epps and Catherine (Pankey) Pegram, were both born the year 1850, the former a native of Saulsbury, Tennessee, and the latter of the state of South Carolina.
Thomas Edward Pegram supplemented his public school training by study at the Chalybeate Springs Institute of North Mississippi in which he completed a course in 1897, and afterward entered the law department of Millsaps College, from which he was graduated in 1905. Previous to that time he had engaged in educational work, teaching in the public schools of Tippah County, and also in Amory and Tupelo, Mississippi. Mr. Pegram was admitted to the bar in 1905 and for twenty years has continuously followed his profession, in which he has attained high standing. In 1922 he was elected circuit judge of the third judicial district and his course has received high indorsement, for his decisions are strictly fair and impartial, based upon a comprehensive knowledge of the law and the equity of the case. Judge Pegram is a man of varied talents and as president of the Bank of Ripley he exerts an influence strongly felt in financial affairs of this locality. He is wisely guiding the destiny of the institution and the policy which he follows is one which carefully safeguards the interests of stockholders and depositors and at the same time promotes the success of the bank.
In Memphis, Tennessee, on April 11, 1906, Judge Pegram was married to Garmillia Bennett, who was born in 1878, a daughter of Miles and Lucy J. Bennett. Judge and Mrs. Pegram have a son: Thomas E., Jr. Mrs. Pegram is a member of the Parent-Teacher Association and also belongs to the Civic League of Ripley. The Judge is one of the state leaders of the democratic party and served as presidential elector in 1912 and 1920. He is identified with the Masonic fraternity and for several years was member of the finance committee of the Grand Lodge of that order. The breadth of his knowledge of any subject engaging his attention is one of his outstanding characteristics and his life has been dominated by a high sense of duty and honor.
Thomas married Hattie Garmillia Bennett daughter of Miles Jefferson Bennett and Lucy Jane Dodds on 11 Apr 1906 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee.
