Memphis - Jeanette Pegram Renshaw, 92, formerly of Tupelo, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Primacy Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 23, 1916,to Dr. Robert Hugh Pegram Sr. and Pearl West Pegram in Mississippi. She was a graduate of Mississippi University for Women in Columbus. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and the Aldersgate class. She was a member of Eastwood Home and Garden Club, The Coterie, Dixon Gallery and Garden, Theatre Memphis, Brooks Museum and League, and the Salvation Army Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Duration Club and Kings Daughters Circle. She was the widow of Jack C. Renshaw, who died March 11, 2000. Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Abbott; one son, Bob Renshaw; one daughter-in-law, Georgette Renshaw; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Wilson of Tupelo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dr. Robert Hugh Pegram Jr. and Dr. Max Pegram; one sister, Jo Anne Scribner; and her stepmother, Delta Dillard Pegram.
Jeannette married 1 Jarrett (Jack) Crewdson Renshaw on 3 Jun 1939. Jarrett was born 2 about 1913. He died 3 in Mar 2000 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee.
His obituary which appeared in The Commercial Appeal Memphis, Tennessee on March 13, 2000 reads in part:
Jack Crawdson Renshaw, a leader in Memphis's post-World War II building boom, died Saturday at Baptist East Memorial Hospital of cardiac arrest. He was 87. Mr. Renshaw had a long career of developing areas primarily in East and Southeast Memphis, including the Parkway Village and Nonconnah areas. The Central High School and University of Memphis graduate built hundreds of homes and later served as president of Walkem Development Corporation, a partnership with Wallace Johnson. and lifelong friend and Holiday Inn founder Kemmons Wilson. The company developed property all over the southeast. Mr. Renshaw and his colleagues liked to fly themselves to business deals rather than take commercial flights or drive. Mr. Renshaw kept his pilot's license well into his 70s. "He never retired. Neither of us did," Wilson said. "We probably flew to 50 real estate deals." Mr. Renshaw's son, Bob Renshaw of Memphis, said one of his father's proudest moments came when he participated with President Johnson in the signing of the 1965 Fair Housing Act, which established the department of Housing and Urban Development. A longtime friend, Bill Jemison, likes to tell the story of the time the pair flew to Cuba in the 1950s on a whim, to look for a good fishing spot. Upon their arrival at an abandoned airfield next to a prison, they ran into hostile soldiers. "A truckload of soldiers with loaded rifles surrounded us," Jemison said. A bilingual taxi driver in search of a fare pulled up and helped the men explain themselves. "They would probably have thrown us in jail otherwise," Jemison said. They were forced to leave immediately. The scary episode didn't daunt Mr. Renshaw. "He had such a spirit of adventure," Bob Renshaw said. "He had a real cool life." Mr. Renshaw was active in the local and state homebuilding associations, serving as president of both. He was also a lifetime director of the National Association of Homebuilders. In 1963, Mr. Renshaw was named the first Tennessee Homebuilder of the Year. He was inducted into the Tennessee Homebuilders Hall of Fame in 1995. Mr. Renshaw was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for almost 50 years, where he was instrumental in its early growth. In addition to his son, Mr. Renshaw leaves his wife of 63 years, Jeanette Pegram Renshaw; his daughter, Dorothy Abbott of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
