The following is extracted from a report prepared December 7, 1983 for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historical Landmarks Commission about the home built by the Greshams:

"The E. B. Gresham house on Edgehill Road in Myers Park is unquestionably one of the more unusual houses of its style in Charlotte. Built by Edwin Beverly Gresham (1878-1968) and his wife, Nettle Dowd Gresham (1880-1945), in 1924-5, its setting overlooking Edgehill Park reflects a comfortable style of suburban living of the 1920's, and the unique architectural features of its stonework and imitation thatched roof suggest owners who wished to combine solidity in a contemporary home with a taste for the out-of-the-ordinary. E. B. Gresham, who was a Virginia native, married Nettle Dowd, the daughter of Capt. J. C. and Henrietta Rives Dowd of Charlotte, on October 17, 1899, when he was twenty-two and she nineteen. By the early 1920's, E. B. Gresham, a graduate of Wake Forest, had become a department manager for the J. B. Ivey Company. The couple, with their son E. B. Gresham, Jr., who was studying for a career in law, lived on East Boulevard in Dilworth until about 1924, when they temporarily took up residence at 611 Hermitage Road in Myers Park. The latter address, at the corner of Hermitage and Ardsley Roads and one short block south of Edgehill, had previously been the home of John H. Cutter, a prominent real estate investor-developer and cotton broker..."

"...About the time the house was being built in 1925, E. B. Gresham went into business for himself and opened a cafe on Statesville Avenue. Four years later, in November, 1929, the Greshams sold the stone bungalow ... and moved to Greensboro, where Mr. Gresham again went into the restaurant business. Nettle and E. B. Gresham remained in Greensboro, she passing away there in 1945 and he in 1968 at the age of 90."

Bruce and Mattie had two children, Robert Lee II, named for his grandfather, and Billie Atwater, no doubt named for her maternal grandfather Billy Atwater, and perhaps for her paternal greatgrandfather, William F. Strowd. The Southern Part of Heaven by William Meade Prince of Chapel Hill includes several anecdotes regarding Bruce. A favorite old Chapel Hill story is that Bruce at age fifteen or so, built an "infernal machine" using parts from his mother's sewing machine. The "Strowdmobile", sometimes referred to as the "Devil Wagon", resembled a long narrow wooden wagon with a steering wheel, complete with a small engine, a drag brake, and no muffler. It was therefore very loud and scared the horses, which in turn, of course, scared those sitting upon or behind those horses. The Town Fathers passed an ordinance specifically directed toward Bruce and his contraption, intending to force the ban which would keep him and his machine out of the business area of Chapel Hill. It did not work. It appears that even his father, a merchant and Vice President of the Bank of Chapel Hill, had little control over his youngest son, either!

The Chapel Hill newspaper still occasionally carries a story about how many thousands of times Bruce broke the law only to later become the pioneer automobile dealer of the area. Strowd Motor Company, his Ford dealership, was in business from 1914 to about 1950. In 1910 Bruce attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, then headed north to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to work and study at the Rambler Plant. He wanted to know all about the automobile. When he returned to Chapel Hill there were thirteen vehicles in the village, and nobody but Bruce who knew how to repair them. Even his own steering wheel came off in his hands while his Model T was stalled on the railroad tract between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. He later patented a starter.

Bruce was a charter member of the Chapel Hill Rotary Club, Chairman of the first welfare board, and one of the few lay members of the UNC Faculty Club. In 1937 he was presented a trophy by the Kiwanis Club, which designated him Chapel Hill's "Most Valuable Citizen". He rarely missed a basketball game in the old "Tin Can", and held close friendships with people of all walks of life, including UNC President, Dr. Frank Porter Graham. He opened his Chatham County farm pond for use by the Chapel Hill and Carrboro Boy Scouts and built shelters throughout northern Chatham County to protect the young people from inclement weather while waiting for their school buses. Bruce gave the opportunity to all Chapel Hill youth who wanted to take the last train ride on the old University Line, of which his grandfather, Buck Strowd, was an Incorporator.

Bruce married Mattie Lillian Atwater daughter of William Bascum Atwater and Martha Helen Clegg. Mattie was born 1 on 24 Oct 1888 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. She died 2 on 2 Nov 1972 in Chapel Hill, Orange Co., North Carolina.

The following is from Bebe Fox's family notes:

Mattie was the youngest of the eight children. Her father died when she was twenty years of age. Mattie studied at Elon College. She was known for her beautiful watercolor paintings and was also a talented pianist. In her earlier years her dresses were of the latest fashion, beaded flapper dresses and cloche hats remain. She was especially fond of small children and animals. She always had at least two fox terriers, usually named Leo and Jerry, and once she had a monkey named Jocko. There was a stone goldfish pool with a tall birdbath in the center. They also were allowed to play with the "pretties" in her dressing table drawers -costume jewelry, lacy handkerchiefs, and dainty little rouge pots. Mattie had a green thumb. She grew beautiful roses and had a way with African violets. She was a good cook and set a pretty table. Her grandchildren called her Bama.

They had the following children:

  14174 M i Robert Lee Strowd 1.
14175 F ii Billie Atwater Strowd 1 was born 2 on 21 Jun 1915 in Chapel Hill, Orange Co., North Carolina. She died 3 on 9 Jun 1976 in Asheboro, Randolph Co., North Carolina.

Billie was educated at Stratford Hall in Danville, Virginia, Arlington Hall in Arlington, Virginia, and Salem College. She was a Charter member of the Junior Service League in Chapel Hill and a Red Cross volunteer in Sarasota, Florida. Billie was an excellent swimmer and diver. In her earlier years she was known to be quite a horsewoman.
Billie married James Bryant Johns 1 son of Ernest Theodore Johns and Sallie Lillian Harris. James was born 2 on 20 Oct 1911 in Durham, Durham Co., North Carolina. He died 3 on 21 Feb 1993 in Durham, Durham Co., North Carolina.

J. B. Johns served as president of the Chapel Hill Merchants Association in 1941 and president of the Chapel Hill Rotary Club in 1949. He is a Paul Harris Fellow. After removing to Asheboro, North Carolina, he served as the chairman of the Randolph County Heart Fund and Cerebral Palsy drive, was president, then treasurer, of the Asheboro Rotary Club, and served on the Board of Directors of the Randolph Chamber of Commerce, and the First Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II. J. B. was an avid sportsman.
