In 1920, he was working as a fireman with Seaboard railroad. In 1930 the couple were living in Richmond, Virginia and Alva was employed as a railroad engineer.

In 1920 he was working as a railway engineer. He apparently died between 1925 and 1930 when we find Janette has remarried. The children of Herman Spain are all shown on the 1930 Census as the step-children of Joseph D. Pope.

Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtie Lee Adams, 76, who died Monday at Jesse Holman Jones Hospital after a brief illness, were held Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at Associated Funeral Home. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery. She was a native of Logan County, KY, the daughter of the late James and Isabelle Moore Frey. She was a member of the Center Point Baptist Church. She was the widow of Joe G. Adams. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Howard Highsmith, Rt 2, Springfield; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joe Robert Adams, Grand Haven, Mich.; two brothers, R.B. Frey, Springfield, and Homer Frey, Russellville, KY; two sisters, Mrs. J.A. Goodwin and Mrs. Marion Dowell, both of Russellville, Ky; one grandson, Joe Howard Highsmith, Springfield; and one great-grandchild.
Myrtie married Joe Adams. Joe was born about 1884.
They had the following children:
