We are indebted to Judy, a grand-daughter of Webb Vaughn for the information on this family. We hope that others who are trying to determine the parents of Leslie Pegram (who was adopted by George P. Pegram and his wife Lora Self) will be able to complete the picture of the descendants of George Pinkney Pegram.
According to Judy, the family story is that George was seeing both Mary Vaughn (Shug) and Lora Self. When Mary discovered she was pregnant, Lora pretended to be pregnant and her family was of some prominence and put pressure on George to marry Lora. It is also believed that George's two children, Leslie and Frank were adopted. The 1910 census lists Leslie (10 yrs old) in G.P. Pegram's household as a cousin. Frank doed not appear in the home at the time of the 1910 Census.
George Pinkney Pegram left in his will a child's portion of his estate to Webb Vaughn. Webb had died March 1930 before the will was probated and his 4 children got his part of the estate.
George married (1) Mary Elizabeth Vaughn daughter of George Vaughn and Susan E. Susan E. Branson. Mary was born 1 on 3 Nov 1875 in Stokes Co., North Carolina. She died 2 on 3 Dec 1955 in Forsyth Co., North Carolina. She was buried 3 in Belews Creek Christian Church, Forsyth Co., North Carolina.
