The following is from Kentucky Biographies:

"ROBERT FRANKLIN RIVES, the wheat king of Kentucky, was born December 7, 1837, on the state line between Kentucky and Tennessee. His father, Robert Rives, was born in Warren County, North Carolina, near the Virginia line, December 16, 1803. He was a son of William and Catherine (Turner) Rives, natives of Dinwiddie County, near Petersburg, Virginia. Catherine Turner was a daughter of Stephen and Susan (Hanover) Turner of Amherst County, Virginia. William and Catherine Rives (grandparents) had ten children, whose names were: Stephen; Thomas; Nancy, whose husband's name was Mabry; William; Sallie, whose husband's name was Moss; Polly, who married Watkins; Robert (father) ; James; Rebecca, who married Southall, and Susan, who married Cunningham.

Robert Rives (father) was married in 1825 to Rebecca Vaughn, (daughter of Susan (Vincent) Vaughn, who was a first cousin of Thomas Jefferson. They had four children: William Vincent, the eldest son, reared a large family, all of whom are dead except Ophenia (Crews); Charles Jefferson, second son, married Annie Brockman, a granddaughter of the distinguished John Mc-Dougal of Scotland, and had four children: Noyal, Nebraska, Jennie and Robbie, a daughter who married a Mr. Cayce; Susan, the third child and only daughter, married Thomas Adams, and was the mother of four children: Robert, Rebecca, Charles and Thomas. Robert F. Rives, the subject of this sketch, is the youngest child. His father died August 5, 1885, at the venerable age of eighty-three. His life was an honor to his country, and he transmitted to his large posterity that most priceless heritage known to mankind - an unspotted name.

Robert F. Rives began to solve for himself the problem of life at an early age. When nineteen he superintended his father's farm. At the be-ginning of the Civil war he was among the first to offer his service to the southern cause. In April, 1861, he joined the Fourteenth Tennessee Infantry, Company L; and, after drilling with that regiment for two months, he was taken ill with fever and was disabled for infantry service.
After the fall of Fort Donelson in February, 1862, he enlisted in Company A, First Kentucky Cavalry, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and, after serving six months, his company's time expiring, he joined General Morgan's command. He was a good soldier and was in some severe conflicts. He accompanied General Morgan in his raid through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio; his battalion led the advance all through the raid and fought more or less every day. The closest call he ever had was when the gun-boats at Buffington Island interfered with their crossing, and a large body of Federal cavalry swooped down upon them, and he, with two hundred others, swam the Ohio River, and thus made their escape. They marched through West Virginia to Abingdon, Virginia, and reached the army in time to take part in the battle of Chickamauga. He was in many cavalry fights and, although he had his horse shot under him, he escaped wounds or prison. He was with that captain who, when news came of Lee's surrender, said: "Boys, we have fought a good fight, and now it seems to be over. We are going home. Go home and bring up your children to love our South and, though you may have nothing else to leave them, you can leave them the heritage that they are sons of men who were in Lee's army."

In 1874 Mr. Rives bought of Mr. William Wallace, a place of four hundred acres, seven miles from Hopkinsville. He afterward added two hundred acres to this farm, besides having the management of two other large tracts of land, which he operates in connection with his own. He grows more wheat than any ten of the aver-age growers, his yield often being fifteen to seven-teen thousand bushels.

After the war Robert F. Rives was married to Isabella, daughter of William H. and Elizabeth (Hardgrove) Pollard of Amelia County, Virginia. After eight years of married life she died, leaving four children: Robert Henry, born September 22, 1869; Franklin, born April 6, 1871; Florence Neal, born September 8, 1872; George Pollard, born April 3, 1874. Of these, Robert Henry, a large planter in Texas, married Miss Eubank of that state, and has one son, Raymond. Franklin, at present a member of the Hopkinsville, Kentucky, bar, graduated from the Cumber-land University of Lebanon, Tennessee, with distinguished honors and is already in the front rank of the young lawyers of the state.

Mr. Rives was married (second) to Sally A., daughter of Rev. Jordan and Sarah (Viser) Moore of Montgomery County, Tennessee. By this marriage he has four children: Mary Belle, born September 18, 1879; Jordan Moore, born October 5, 1882; Susan Cleveland, born November 11, 1884; John Lewis, born February 19, 1888.

In his religious association Mr. Rives and family are connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church (South).

When it comes to exercising the prerogative of a citizen at tile polls, he votes with the time-honored Democracy of his fathers."

Robert married (1) Isabella Virginia Pollard daughter of William H. Pollard and Elizabeth Hardgrove on 2 Dec 1868 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Isabella was born in 1846 in Virginia. She died in 1875 in probably, Christian Co., Kentucky.

They had the following children:

6611 M i Robert Henry Rives was born on 22 Sep 1869. He died on 14 Mar 1959.
6612 M ii Franklin Rives 1 was born on 6 Apr 1871 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee.

Frank Rives began the practice of law at Hopkinsville just twenty-five years ago. He early established his reputation and prestige as an able attorney, has handled much of the prominent litigation in the courts of his district, and has also been prominent in a political way. He is best known over the state at large because of his work as a state senator, an office he holds at present, and this is the second term he has served in the State Senate.

Mr. Rives was born in Montgomery County, Tennessee, April 6, 1871. He comes of a distinguished Virginia branch of the Rives family, one of whose members was William Cabell Rives. His grandfather, Robert Rives, was born in Warren County, North Carolina, in 1800, and early in the nineteenth century came west to Tennessee and lived out his life as a farmer in Montgomery County, where he died in 1885. R. F. Rives, father of the Hopkinsville lawyer, was born in Montgomery County, Tennessee, in 1837, and lived there as a farmer until 1874, when he removed to Christian County, Kentucky. He still lives on his homestead seven miles south of Hopkinsville, and in that section of Christian County, conceded to be one of the richest agricultural districts in the state, he has what is acknowledged to be one of the largest and most valuable farms. In his eightieth year, in 1917, he retired and turned over the burdens of farming to younger shoulders. R. F. Rives has always been a democrat, has been prominent in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and is one of the surviving Confederate veterans. He was all through the war, served as a cavalryman under Morgan and Forrest, was at the battles of Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain, and afterward with the armies under General Joe Johnston during the retirement before General Sherman. R. F. Rives married for his first wife Isabella Virginia Pollard, who was born in Amelia County, Virginia, in 1846 and died in Christian County, Kentucky, in 1875. She was the mother of four children : R. H. Rives, a farmer living six miles south of Hopkinsville; Frank; Florence N., wife of Rev. W. B. Kendall, pastor of the First Baptist Church at Paris, Texas ; and George P., a farmer eight miles south of Hopkinsville. For his second marriage R. F. Rives married Miss Sallie A. Moore, who was born in Humphrey County, Tennessee, in 1845. To this marriage were also born four children : Mary Bell, died at San Antonio, Texas, in 1918, while her husband, Dr. J. L. Barker, was in the Army Medical Corps, his permanent home and place of practice being at Pembroke, Kentucky; Jordan M. is a farmer seven miles south of Hopkinsville; Susan Cleve-land is the wife of John Helms, a cotton broker at Terrell, Texas; and John L. is a farmer seven miles south of Hopkinsville.

It was in that home community south of Hopkinsville that Frank Rives spent his boyhood and early youth. He attended the rural schools there, also the South Kentucky College at Hopkinsville, and completed his literary and professional education in Cumberland University at Lebanon, Tennessee. He was a student of the literary department for a year, and in February, 1895, graduated with the LL.B. degree. He was president of his senior class in the University and a member of the Kappa Sigma college fraternity. Mr. Rives began the practice of law at Hopkinsville in 1895, and a few years were sufficient to establish his reputation as a very capable and hard working lawyer who exercised great care in the handling of all interests entrusted to his charge. In addition to being a successful lawyer he has become an extensive land owner, having 1000 acres of farm lands in Christian County, also 660 acres of farming land on the Texas Gulf coast in Jim Wells and McMullen counties, and another tract of thirty acres in Volusia County, Florida.

Mr. Rives for six years was master commissioner of the Christian County Circuit Court. He was first elected a member of the State Senate in the fall of 1905, representing Christian and Hopkins counties. He served the regular term of four years, during the sessions of 1906 and 1908, and was a member of the rules committee in both sessions, chairman of the charitable institutions committee in the session of 1908, and in that session was also on the sub-committee for the appointment of committees. In 1908 he led the fight on the County Unit Prohibition Bill. While he was not personally credited with the introduction of many bills, he was instrumental in having passed more amendments than any of his colleagues. In the fall of 1917 Mr. Rives was again returned to the Senate for the sessions of 1918 and 1920. He served on the rules, roads, charitable institutions and other committees and was paid the highly significant compliment by the leader of the opposition of being the most valuable man on the floor of the Senate. During his second term his record has not been so much characterized by new legislation as by the influence he has exercised in preventing unnecessary bills, and that has been an invaluable service to the entire state.

Senator Rives was for many years president of the Library Board of Hopkinsville, and was responsible for keeping the question of an appropriate library building before the people and maintaining the progressive spirit of the library as an institution. Ever since the years of young manhood he has been a steward in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Ile is a member of the State Bar Association and the American Bar Association, and is one of the prominent lawyers of Kentucky today.

In December, 1898, at Lebanon, Tennessee, Mr. Rives married Miss Emma Blanton, who was born in Tennessee, a (daughter of W. B. and Mrs. (Peebles) Blanton. Her father was a merchant and stock raiser at Lebanon. Mrs. Rives, who died at Hopkinsville in September, 1903, was liberally educated, attended a Young Ladies' Seminary at Lebanon and was a teacher at Lebanon for three years before her marriage. In May, 1908, at Hopkinsville, Senator Rives married Mrs. Sarah (Mc-Daniel) Richards. Her first husband was the late J. Baily Richards, a merchant who died at Hopkinsville. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Richard McDaniel, now deceased.
