John died unexpectedly Jan. 16, 2004, in Signal Mountain, Tenn.
At Princeton, John was a member of Elm Club and president of the University Press Club, covering sports for the Philadelphia Inquirer and UPI. He graduated summa cum laude from the SPIA program and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
After graduation he wandered around Europe for several months and was in Rome when he received his induction notice. His Army assignments from 1951-53 included an antiaircraft unit in Korea. He returned to Chattanooga, where he joined the Provident Life & Insurance Co. During his 37 years with the company, he developed and implemented its first managed healthcare business and was president of its property-casualty insurance subsidiary. He retired as a senior vice president in 1990.
His wife Norma said, "He did not miss a beat, opening his own financial consulting business on the Monday following his retirement." She added, "His affection for Princeton never wavered."
John was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church and deeply committed to his community, serving on a variety of education, social, and health boards.

Lewisville-Clemmons - Mrs. Lacie Wallace Caudle Pegram, 94, of Lewisville-Clemmons died Saturday, June 8, 2002. She was born April 24, 1908, near Harmony in Iredell County, being the only survivor of thirteen children born of Thomas G. Wallace and Rosie Lee Arnold Wallace. Mrs. Pegram was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church and was a homemaker, a farmer's wife and widely acclaimed for her talents in gardening, canning, sewing, quilting and crocheting. She was also an active member of the Home Demonstration Club and the Lewisville Joy Club. She is preceded in death by husbands Thomas E. "George" Caudle, David Sheets and Thomas Pegram. Surviving are a daughter, Sarah C. Pegram and husband Hester of Clemmons; a son, Lloyd C. Caudle and wife Dorothy S. of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, Ann and Michael Murtland, Judy and Danny Jarvis, Ted and Penny Pegram, Fred Pegram, Grainger and Grace Caudle, Cameron and Cindy Caudle and Gordon and Jenny Caudle; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a special thanks to her caregiver, Ruby Bingham. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel by the Rev. Freddie Moretz. Burial will follow at Lewisville Baptist Church Cemetery.
