The following is from Reece Andrews, an Andrews family historian who has kindly given us permission to use this excerpt from a book he is doing on the Andrews family.
"Martha Jo Andrews was born February 8, 1927 on a farm near Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. I don't remember much about her early life but do remember her as a teenager who loved to read "romance novels" and hated to wash dishes and do housework. Of course, we boys who had to work in the fields and milk cows thought she had it pretty soft.
She enjoyed flirting with the soldiers who were in our neighborhood while on training maneuvers prior to going to Germany in World War II but Mother watched her like a hawk. She had a big crush on a soldier named Marvin Thomas for awhile but other than carrying on a lengthy correspondence with him after he went overseas, nothing came of it. I remember sitting on the front porch and listening to the soldiers whistle at her as they passed by in truck convoys. Some of them would toss empty cartridge cases with their name and address rolled up inside in hopes that she would write to them.She was a good student and, after graduating from high school, she moved to Nashville to work for Ragland Potter, a wholesale grocery distributor, as a bookkeeper. The bane of her work life was a supervisor named "Elizabeth Lyons" and I can still hear Martha mimicking her nasal twang as she recounted the myriad injustices she suffered at her hand. (I suspect she resented taking orders from anyone-a typical Andrews trait, the writer excepted of course) She worked there for many years during which time she married Alvin H. Pegram, Jr. on October 11, 1949. Al was from Ashland City, Tennessee and was Parts Manager for the Chevrolet dealer there and in Nashville for many years until his retirement. Their daughter, Mary Elaine, was born May 3, 1957. Martha later joined a local advertising agency and worked there until she retired to home life in Nashville. Martha was a devoted daughter and spent a huge amount of time and energy tending to Mother and Dad before their deaths. She continued her caring ways after Mother entered a convalescent home in Lebanon and, despite being the target of Mother's nagging and complaining, she never gave up her regular visits and loving attention to her needs. She was assisted in this by her sister, Mary, who also commuted to Lebanon at least weekly to run errands and ensure that Mother's needs were met. Unfortunately, Martha was diagnosed with a liver disease when in her early 60's. Her doctor kept telling her to "stop drinking" and it was with much difficulty that she and Al convinced him that she did not drink. The symptoms of cirrhosis apparently masked the true nature of her disease and she eventually underwent two liver transplants. Sadly, she survived the second operation for only a short time and passed away on September 10, 1991. Her loving husband, Al, who had attended her during her lengthy illness, died April 22, 1995, only a few weeks after his marriage to a longtime family friend. "
