Doris Jean Long PONTOTOC - Doris Jean Burton Long, 69, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a long illness. She was born Jan. 13, 1936, in Monroe County to the late Francis M. and Ida V. Burton. She was a 1954 graduate of Tupelo High School. She worked many years as a secretary for the R.W. Reed Company and as a legal secretary for a number of years. She was church secretary for the Verona United Methodist Church for 10 years. In addition to being a homemaker, she operated a gift shop in Pontotoc for several years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pontotoc and recently had been attending Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed traveling and working with flowers, antiques and photography. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Sammy Washburn and the Rev. Ed Woodall officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.Survivors include her husband of 48 years, the Rev. John S. Long Jr. of Pontotoc; two sons, Steve Long and wife, Emily, of Tupelo, and Matt Long of Pontotoc; her twin sister, Dot B. Talley and husband, Bud, of Verona; a brother, Col. Carl Burton and wife, Mary Lou, of Gap, Pa.; two grandchildren, Brittany Turman and Reece C. Long, both of Tupelo; six nieces, Pat Wegener, Toodie Jones, Jan Knapp, Kaye Denton, Carla March and Lisa Alred Sleifel; seven nephews, Greg Talley, Mike and Eddie Burton, Jerry and Gary Alred, and Mike and James Ray Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Virginia B. Smith; two brothers, Melvin and Marlin Burton; a niece, Carol Magee; and a nephew, Scott Burton. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1800 W. Main St., Box 1, Tupelo, MS 38801.
