He died on 20 Dec 1989 in Beaufort Co. Hospital, Washington, North Carolina. He was buried in Soule Cemetery, Swan Quarter, North Carolina.
In 1920 he is shown as age 19, living with Early Gibbs and wife, Ella, where he is identified as brother-in-law.
His obituary reads:
Herbert Lee Sadler, 89, Rt. 1, died Dec. 20 in Beaufort County Hospital. Graveside services were held. Friday in Soule cemetery. Sadler, a native of Hyde County, was the son of the late Frank and Mollie Midgette Sadler. He was a prominent farmer in the Lake Comfort Community and was a member of the Middleton Christiain Church, as well as the Atlantic Lodge AF&AM for more than 50 years. Sadler was a member of the Hyde County Board of Commissioners from 1947-61. He was chairman of the board for several years. He is survived by his wife: Mrs. Zerola Midgette Sadler of the home; three sons: Gervis E. Sadler, Ottis E. Sadler and H.L.Sadler of Fairfield; two daughters: Mrs. Edith S. Pugh and Mrs. Betty S. Spencer of Rt. 1, Engelhard; a brother, Frank Sadler of Swan Quarter; a sister, Mrs. Maggie S. Dodd of Belhaven; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The family is at the home. Memorials may be made to the Middleton Christian Church, Rt. 1, Englehard 27824. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter. McKINNEY, Iola Gibbs CHESAPEAKE, VA. - Iola Gibbs McKINNEY, 96, of South Lake Circle, died Friday, March 1, 1996, in a Chesapeake Nursing Center. Mrs. McKinney was born in Engelhard, N.C. and was the daughter of the late Syle B. and Louise Midgett Gibbs. She was the widow of Robert Darrell McKinney and was a member of Great Bridge Church of Christ in Chesapeake. Survivors include her two daughters: Shirley Decker of Norfolk and Delma Smith of Chesapeake; two sons: Horace McKinney of Powells Point, N.C. and Bobby McKinney of California; two sisters: Rosa Toler of Wanchese, N.C. and Mollie Gibbs of Edenton; a brother, John Gibbs of Chesapeake; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home in Great Bridge. There will be no public viewing or visitation. GIBBS, John Norfleet CHESAPEAKE, VA. - John Norfleet GIBBS, 87, of Pocaty Road, died Monday, March 4, 1996, in Chesapeake. Mr. Gibbs was born in Engelhard, N.C., and was the son of the late Syl Berge and Mary Louise Midgette Gibbs. He was a retired crane operator with IUOE #147 and was a charter member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He was a member of Fairview Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Alethia Pauline Gibbs; his daughter, Mitzie Hastings and husband George W. Hastings of Chesapeake; two sisters: Mollie Gibbs of Edenton, N.C. and Rosa G. Toler of Wanchese, N.C.; and three grandchildren: Dr. Harold J. Addington and wife Kathy of Virginia Beach, Va., Dinah Sue Hastings and Henry Clint Hastings, both of Chesapeake. The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. today in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home. Ministers Gerald L. Stemm and Ted Clifton will officiate. Interment will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. CHESAPEAKE - Alethia Pauline Francis GIBBS, 85, of the 1700 block of Pocaty Road, a Great Bridge school bus driver, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in Chesapeake General Hospital. Born in Fairfield, N.C., Pauline lived in the Tidewater area for the past 73 years. She was the daughter of the late Ernest C. Francis and the late Susan Baum Gibbs. She was also predeceased by her stepfather, Olian Gibbs and her sister, Claudia M. Toonk. She was the widow of her first husband, James Gilbert, as well as her second husband, John N. Gibbs, who passed away in March, 1996. Pauline retired from the Chesapeake Public School System in 1985 after 21 years of service. For more than 50 years, Pauline was an active member of the Fairview Church of Christ. She loved her family, her church family and her many friends. She always tried to reach out to others despite her many health problems. Pauline was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include her daughter, Mitzie Gilbert Hastings of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Dr. Harold J. Addington Jr. and his wife Kathy of Virginia Beach, Dinah Sue Hastings of Chesapeake, and Henry Hastings and his wife Elly of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Dora E. McCoy of Portsmouth, Martha G. Forehand and her husband James, and Sarah G. Curling and her husband Horace, all of Chesapeake; one brother, gospel singer Samuel L. ``Buddy'' Gibbs and his wife Eleanor also of Chesapeake; two sisters-in-law, Rosa Toler of Wanchese, N.C., and Mollie Gibbs of Edenton, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives in Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio and Florida. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by Pastor Gerald Stemm and Pastor Ted Clifton. Found a baby on her door step and raised her until her death when her
daughter took over. She loved that little girl"Alma Jean" with all
her heart even though she had grandchildren older than that.
