Hazel Gibbs Silverthorne, 91, formerly of Springfield Avenue, died April 28 in Chesapeake. A native of Engelhard, NC, she was the daughter of the late Early and Ella Sadler Gibbs and the widow of Asby Gray Silverthorne. She was a member of First Christian Disciples Church, Norfolk. She is survived by a daughter, Joanne Rooks and her husband, Frank; a son, A. Wayne Silverthorne and his wife, Lucille, all of Chesapeake; five grandchildren, Debbie Tyree, Bryan Silverthorne, Denise Webb, Paul Miller, and Dan Rooks; 6 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ella Cahoon, Earline Jones, and Marva Cates, all of Chesapeake; and three brothers, Herbert Gibbs of Martinsville, VA; Larry Gibbs and Malcolm Gibbs, both of Engelhard, NC.

Mrs. Earline Gibbs Jones, formally of 1105 Ferbee Avenue, , Va., died February 11, 2003, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Chesapeake, Va. She was born in Lake Landing, NC May 18, 1917, daughter of the late Mr. Early Gibbs and Ella Mae Sadler Gibbs. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Mt. Olive Church of Christ, Ponzer, NC. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband Cecil O. Jones, her parents and two brothers, Wilbur Carl and Hugh Blair and one sister Hazel Silverthorne. Surviving are two children, Gayle J. Riddick and husband George of Williamsburg, Va. and Ronnie Wade Jones and wife Charlotte of Portsmouth, Va. Three grandchildren, Georgia Riddick of Richmond, Va., Gina Dubuisson and husband Paul, of Katy, Tx., Ronnie Jones Jr., Portsmouth, Va. and two great-grandchildren Claire and Will Dubuisson of Katy Tx. Earline married Cecil Ottis Jones on 9 Jun 1934 in Lake Landing, Hyde Co., North Carolina. Cecil was born on 27 Sep 1913 in Ponzer, Currituck Township, Hyde Co. NC. He died on 10 Aug 1997 in Senterra Nursing Home, Hampton, Va. He was buried on 13 Aug 1997 in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, Va.

Cecil was a native of Ponzer, NC and was retired from Royster Fertilizer Co. Before moving to 1105 Ferebee Ave, Chesapeake he had had a career as a farmer, insurance salesman, New and Observer distributor. He had a great sense of humor. Even in his final years suffering from dementia he would make jokes and keep one laughing.

Malcolm O. Gibbs, Sr., 81, of 626 White Plains Road, the Middletown Community, Engelhard, died early Tuesday, August 15, 2006, at his home. A Hyde County native, he was born July 2, 1925, the son of the late Early and Ella Mae Sadler Gibbs. He began his career with Pamlico Power and Light Company where he served for 32 years and then served with Tideland Electric Membership Corporation as lineman and Engelhard District Supervisor for 14 years until his retirement. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Earline Marshall Gibbs; a son, Malcolm O. (Mac) Gibbs, Jr. and his wife, Sharon of Engelhard; a daughter, Dawn G. Credle and her husband, Pete of Swan Quarter; two brothers, Larry Gibbs of Engelhard and Herbert Gibbs of Martinsville, Va.; two sisters, Marva G. Cates and Ella G. Cahoon both of Chesapeake, Va.; five grandchildren, Hunter Gibbs, Christian Gibbs, Gina Credle, Beth C. Burt and Todd Credle; and one great-grandson, Blair Grant Gibbs. POWELLS POINT - Horace Robert McKinney, 83, of the 100 block of North River Road died April 27, 2007, in Melbourne Beach, Fla. Born in Engelhard, N.C., he was the son of the late Robert Darrell and Iola Gibbs McKinney and was the widower of Sarah Torcivia McKinney. Mr. McKinney was a retired heavy duty equipment inspector at the Norfolk Naval Base and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. McKinney is survived by a daughter, Rebecca McKinney Lee of Melbourne Beach; two sisters, Delma McKinney Smith of Chesapeake and Shirley McKinney Decker of Norfolk; a brother, Bobby Lee McKinney; and a granddaughter, Sierra Olivia Lee of Melbourne Beach. Besides his wife and parents, Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by a sister, Polly McKinney Hatley. A graveside service will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. at Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach.
