His obituary appeared in the Hyde County Messenger in 1941 as abstracted by by Kay Midgett Sheppard for the Hyde Co., North Carolina web site shows:
"Mr. Liddle John Pugh Midyette, was 83 years old. He died at the home of his son Everette at Lake Landing. He was a native of Hyde County and was known by his friends as "Tobey". At his own request he was buried in a casket he made himself several years ago. Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Amanda Gibbs of Pungo and Mrs. S.R. Gibbs (Ina Gertrude) of Lake Landing; three sons: Everett of Lake Landing, Oscar (Edward Oscar) of Bath and Dammer (Dameron Harry) of Hatteras. [IMO states Little John Pugh "Tobe" Midyette, Jr. was born August 10, 1857 and died January 30, 1941. He was the son of Little John Pugh Midyette, Sr.. and Amanda Pegram. He was married first to Sophia Ann E. Gibbs; second to Mrs. Mary Jane Armstrong Williams; and third to Mrs. Charity Brooks Saunderson. He was buried in Amity Church cemetery in Lake Landing.] "

Gibbs of Grantsboro; and three sisters, Lydia I.G. McKinney of Chesapeake, Mollie Gibbs of Edenton and Rosa G. Toler of Wanchese. ENGELHARD - Davis Harem GIBBS, 80, died Friday morning in Cross Creek Health Care Center in Swan Quarter. A lifelong Hyde County resident, he was the son of the late Sylburge and May Louise Midgette Gibbs. He worked for many years as a clerk in the Gilbert Gibbs' store in Engelhard. He was a member of the Engelhard Christian Church. Surviving are a brother, John Norfleet Gibbs of Chesapeake, Va.; three sisters: Ola McKinney of Chesapeake, Mollie Gibbs of Edenton, and Rosa Toler of Wanchese. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the family plot in Fulford Cemetery in Engelhard. The family will receive friends at Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. This is supported by the fact that that Arthur Barrum and wife Fanny (both born in North Carolina) are found on the 1850 Census.
