For more than a third of a century James Sion Cook has been a member of the North Carolina bar, having been admitted to practice in 1903, at which time he opened an office in Graham and has since remained here. Born in Stokesdale, Guilford County, North Carolina, on the 15th of January, 1870, he is a son of Aaron and Martha J. (Pegram) Cook and a grandson of John Cook and John Pegram, also natives of Guilford County, where Aaron Cook was born in 1809 and spent the seventy years of his life, passing away in 1879. In early manhood he had given his entire attention to farming and later engaged in both milling and agricultural pursuits. His wife, who was born in 1832, passed away in 1908. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
James S. Cook benefited by public school instruction while spending his youthful days on the home farm and later he learned telegraphy, working as a telegraph operator and station agent for five years, on the expiration of which period he spent three years as a student in Oak Ridge Institute, For a time he engaged in teaching in the rural schools of Guilford and Stokes counties, but ambition prompted him to seek further education with a view to further business advancement. Entering the University of North Carolina, he won the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1901 and through the following scholastic year he was teacher of French, Latin and English in the high school of Faison, North Carolina. He then returned to the University, where he studied law in 1902 and 1903 and in the latter year was admitted to the bar, since which time he has practiced in Graham, his long connection with the bar of Alamance County indicating that his professional record is one of capability and success. He has always confined his practice to civil law and he possesses a large law library, whereby he has become thoroughly familiar with his branch of practice. His private library is also an extensive one and there he spends many of his leisure hours in association with the master minds of all ages. Banking interests have also claimed a part of his attention and he has been both legal adviser to and secretary of the Citizens Bank of Graham.
Mr. Cook was married June 6, 1912, to Miss Margaret Bland, of Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina, and they have two children, James Sion Jr. and Elizabeth Bland Cook, the former having been educated at Oak Ridge Institute, Elon College and the University of North Carolina, of witch he is a graduate. Mrs. Cook is a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and both Mr. and Mrs. Cook belong to the Methodist church and are active workers for its upbuilding. For thirty years he has participated zealously in carrying out its program in both the church and Sunday school. He is likewise a recognized leader in Masonry, working for the order since August, 1893. He is a past master of the Thomas M. Holt Lodge No. 492, A. F. & A. M., of Graham, has taken the degrees of both the York and Scottish Rites and for twenty-five years has been a representative to the Grand Lodge. He frequently makes public addresses on Masonic subjects. He is an ex-president of the Kiwanis Club and he has long cooperated in civic affairs, serving as mayor of Graham from 1912 to 1914, during which time he introduced many reform and constructive measures. It was he who established the city fire department, and Graham has long profited by his efforts in many directions.

In 1930, Lydia is found as a widow. The 8 younger children as well as Homer are still at home. There is also a grandson, Hirchal, age 4l, in the home but we are unable to determine who his father is at this time.

Jacob HURST, son of Elza HURST and Sally OVERALL, married Lucinda SURRATT in 1891 in Chester County. Lucinda SURRATT was born in Old Tishomingo County, Ms. abt. 1847 and was the daughter of George SURRATT who was born abt. 1803 in NC. Lucinda and Jacob were both on the 1880 census for McNairy County, page 34, single and living in two different households. On the 1910 census for Chester County, Lucinda's sister, Angeline TACKER, born abt. 1849 in Ms., was living with them and she was a widow. Their neice, Nora SURRATT BARHAM who married Howell BARHAM in McNairy County in 1892, lived in McNairy County as well as another sister of Lucinda and Angeline's, Clara JONES (Mrs. John W. JONES). There was a John and Emma TACKER living next to Nora in 1900 McNairy and Will and Almedia TACKER lived near in 1910 and 1920. Does anyone know what TACKER man Angeline married? Wallace R. "Bill" Pegram, 79, of 1506 Ave., died May 30, 2003, at High Point Care Center. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2003, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel. Burial will be at Guilford Memorial Park. He was born in Guilford County, Sept. 23, 1923, the son of Charles and Bertha Coltrane Pegram. Mr. Pegram had a great love of his family, friends, baseball and his rose garden. He was always known as an immaculate dresser and in earlier in life he won many awards as a ball room dancer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Pegram and Hampton Kirkman, sister, May Sue Pegram. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Pegram; son, Wallace L. Pegram; step-children, Louie Crumpler, ZLynn Nievinski and Sue Stephens; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Pegram and Marguerite De-Hart.Wallace married 1 Martha Lillian Greeson on 11 Aug 1945 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.
