Grover C. Candler Sr., 85, died at his home on Akard St. (Church Hill Route 6) at 5:00 PM Friday after a lengthy illness. A self employed tradesmen and farmer, he was born in Russell County, Va., and moved to Kingsport in 1940. He was a member of Long Island United Methodist Church and of Masonic Lodge No. 251 in Lebanon, Va.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Fortner Candler; daughters, Mrs. Charlie (Ruth) Adams of Hampton Ga.; Mrs. Elizabeth Porter, Bristol, Va., and Mrs. Louise O'Neil, Boston; sons, John W. and Bill G., Kingsport; Paul E., Simpsonville, S.C.; Hunter Bryce, Tucker, Ga., and Grover C. Candler, Jr., Dorchester, Mass.; sisters, Mrs. Maxie Lynd, Erwin; Mrs. Ruth Owen, Roanoke; Mrs. Eva Adams, Spokane, Wash.; Mrs. Lou Phillips, Hampton, Va., and Mrs. Gladys McAllister, Richmond, Va.; brothers, William J., Richmond and E.P.
