BOWMAN WALNUT COVE -- Mrs. Doris Carter Bowman, 69, of 6160 Pine Hall Road, Walnut Cove, N.C., died Sunday, November 7, 1999 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. Mrs. Bowman was born in Rockingham County on April 11, 1930 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hobert and Essie Lee Carter. Mrs. Bowman is survived by her husband of 52 years, Philip Leon Bowman; and two children and their spouses, Philip Leon Bowman, Jr. and wife, Carolyn of Walnut Cove and Kathy Bowman Atkins and husband, Harold of Kernersville. Additional surviving family members include, three grandchildren and their spouses, Angela Chatman and husband, William, Karen Wilkins and husband David, and Lori Bray and husband, Jonathan; six grandchildren, Kayla and Matt Wilkins, Jay and Jared Chatman, and Elacia and Tommy Bray; a brother, Thomas Herman Carter of Rockingham County; and two sisters, Mrs. Francis Miller and Mrs. Erlene Purgason of Reidsville and Madison, N.C., respectively. Mrs. Bowman attended Bethany High School in Rockingham, N.C. She was a charter member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, and held numerous positions and offices in the church including, having served as the church secretary-treasurer from 1981 until the time of her death. Mrs. Bowman retired from Hanes Hosiery in 1992 after 39 years of service. The family will receive visitors at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, 141 Smith Edwards Rd., Kernersville from 7:00-9:00 p.m., Monday, November 8, 1999. Funeral services will be held at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 7279 Pine Hall Road, Belews Creek, N.C. at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 1999. Interment will be at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Pine Hall Rd., Walkertown, N.C. immediately following the Tuesday afternoon service. MADISON— Erlene Carter Purgason, 73, of 1458 Ellisboro Road, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at Morehead Memorial Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ellisboro Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Purgason was born on Sept. 7, 1931, in Rockingham County to the late Thomas Hobart Carter and the late Essie Lee Carter. She was retired from Pace, Inc., and was a member of Ellisboro Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Frances Miller and Doris Bowman.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert Purgason of the home; son Donald Ray Purgason and wife Ann of Stokesdale; daughter Shirley P. Wilkins and husband Terry of Madison; brother T. Herman Carter and wife Evelyn of Reidsville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home and all other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ellisboro Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Sallie Alderman, 1604 Ellisboro Road, Madison, NC 27025.

A native of Rockingham County, he was a son of the late James Hubert and Carrie Brame Carter and had lived in the Sandy Cross Community all of his life. He was retired from Macfield, a retired farmer and a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. John was preceded in death by his sister, Carrie C.
