At the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments on Laskin Road Virginia Beach, VA the visitors filed in quietly, stopping only to sign the guest registry before taking their place in line.
Most were friends of 19-year-old Brian Christopher McKinney. Some were buddies from Kellam High School, his alma mater. Others were friends of the parents, Linda and Morris McKinney, or his sister Cynthia McKinney.
The visitors stood in line and wept silently, dabbing away tears with tissue. The elders silently shook their heads. Someone cried out "why?" in a sad, plaintive voice. No one had an answer.
McKinney's casket was surrounded by flowers. Brilliant pink carnations and yellow chrysanthemums and daisies. There were red roses and white, purple and crimson snapdragons. They were the last gift his friends gave before he was buried Wednesday at Nimmo United Methodist Church cemetery.
"I've known him since he was in seventh grade," said best friend Jeff Beavers in a halting voice. "I guess you could say he was real sincere, and dependable."
When McKinney was at Kellam he wrestled in the 126-pound weight class. Beavers, now 18, wrestled at 132-pounds. During the long and difficult wrestling season that calls on grapplers to adhere to strict diets and long practice sessions, Beavers and McKinney were inseparable.
"Brian was the only one of my friends who could understand what I was going through when I was cutting weight," Beavers said. It was the kind of compliment that wrestlers understand implicitly.
Keven Michaels, the school's wrestling coach, said McKinney was a "sensitive and well-mannered" young man who could be a determined student of wrestling. If shown a new maneuver that he didn't quite get the first time, he made the coach show him again and again until he understood it.
Michaels called McKinney a "super nice kid, a good student."
At 7:45 PM Sunday October 26, 1986 McKinney left his parents' Sandbridge home at 3401 Sandpiper Rd. His girlfriend Kerri Hudson, 16 was with him. She lived in the 2300 block of Court Circle in Courthouse Forest, and he was taking her home when the accident happened.
Hudson and McKinney were close friends. She was an accomplished equestrian and a score keeper for the Kellam High School wrestling team. She kept team statistics and handled the paper work that Michaels hated to do. McKinney had come home from college to escort her in the homecoming court last Friday night. He was preparing to return to East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, Sunday night.
Police officer E.M. Coyle, who investigated the accident, said there was no sign of speeding. No drinking involved. Just a dark, rainy night and a sharp curve in the 800 block of Sandbridge Road. The locals call it McClannen's Curve. It's dangerous, police said.
McKinney lost control and the 1980 Subaru struck a tree. He was wearing a seat belt, but Hudson was not and the force of the impact threw her in the back seat. The two were pinned in the car for about an hour while rescue workers freed them.
Hudson was taken to Virginia Beach General Hospital where her condition has stabilized. She suffered several broken bones.
The visiting hours at the funeral home began at 7:00 PM. An hour later the students had begun to drift away. They stood in clusters, near the corners of hallways talking about McKinney and the last time they saw him.
Linda McKinney, his mother, was sitting on a chair by her son's casket. She was exhausted from crying but bravely stood to greet and hug each mourner. The father, Morris McKinney, quietly slipped out of the main room with a friend at his side and entered a hallway. Someone opened a door, and cool air filled the hall.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- VIRGINIA BEACH - Zelma Pauline Brickhouse, 79, died Feb. 14, 2006. Mrs. Brickhouse was a native of Norfolk County and the daughter of the late Harvey W. and Esther Etheridge McPherson. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Lee Brickhouse. Mrs. Brickhouse was a very active member of Northwest Baptist Church, who's greatest joy was being with her grandchildren.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory are her daughter, Carol Brickhouse Luke and husband David of Virginia Beach; her son, Roger "Pedro" Brickhouse and wife Joyce of Jarratt, Va.; four .
